In C#: (Since C# lets you treat a string like an array of characters, this becomes trivial)

    void Main()
    {
        string text = "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog";

        CountCharacters(text).Dump();
    }

    int CountCharacters(string text)
                              => text.Distinct().Count();
