What’s New at AWS 02/2023?

AWS Systems Manager for SAP is now generally available, and it brings a range of powerful capabilities to the table for managing SAP systems. One of the most exciting features is initial support for backing up SAP HANA databases using AWS Backup. This integration provides a streamlined and cost-effective way to backup your SAP HANA databases and protect your critical data.

To take advantage of this feature, you’ll need to have a few things in place. You’ll need to have an AWS account with the necessary permissions to use AWS Backup and Systems Manager. You’ll also need to have an SAP HANA database running in an EC2 instance in your AWS account.

Once you have these prerequisites in place, you can start setting up your backup architecture. Here’s an example of how you might configure your backup solution using AWS Backup and Systems Manager:

  1. First, you’ll create a backup plan in AWS Backup that specifies the backup frequency, retention period, and any other relevant parameters. You can create different backup plans for different SAP HANA databases and schedule them as needed.

  2. Next, you’ll create a Systems Manager automation document that specifies the backup process for your SAP HANA database. This document can include the necessary scripts and commands to initiate the backup process and save the backup to AWS Backup.

  3. Once your automation document is created, you can associate it with your backup plan in AWS Backup. This tells AWS Backup to use the automation document to initiate the backup process for your SAP HANA database.

  4. Finally, you can monitor your backup solution using the AWS Backup console or the AWS Systems Manager console. This will allow you to track the status of your backups and ensure that they are running as expected.

With this architecture in place, you can rest assured that your SAP HANA databases are being backed up on a regular basis and that your critical data is protected. And because you’re using AWS Backup and Systems Manager, you can take advantage of features like incremental backups, point-in-time restores, and the ability to store backups in different AWS regions or even on-premises.

In addition to backing up SAP HANA databases using AWS Backup, AWS Systems Manager for SAP provides a range of other features for managing and monitoring your SAP systems in the cloud. Here are a few examples:

  1. Patching and maintenance: With Systems Manager, you can automate the patching and maintenance of your SAP systems using the same automation documents as your backup solution. This allows you to keep your systems up-to-date and secure without the need for manual intervention.

  2. Performance monitoring: Systems Manager also provides performance monitoring capabilities for your SAP systems, allowing you to track metrics like CPU utilization, memory usage, and disk I/O. This helps you identify performance issues and optimize your systems for better efficiency.

  3. Compliance and governance: Systems Manager helps you maintain compliance and governance requirements for your SAP systems by providing audit trails, automated remediation, and configuration management. This ensures that your systems are configured to meet your organization’s security and compliance standards.

Overall, AWS Systems Manager for SAP is a powerful tool for managing and monitoring your SAP systems in the cloud. Whether you’re looking to backup your SAP HANA databases using AWS Backup, automate patching and maintenance, monitor performance, or maintain compliance and governance, Systems Manager has you covered. And because it’s fully integrated with AWS, you can take advantage of the scalability, reliability, and security of the AWS cloud.

In conclusion, the integration of AWS Systems Manager with SAP HANA and AWS Backup is a game-changer for organizations running SAP workloads in the cloud. With a little bit of setup, you can have a robust and cost-effective backup solution that protects your data and provides peace of mind. Give it a try and see the benefits for yourself!
