My FIRST EVER PORTFOLIO website

Hello everyone, I hope you’re doing well.

I would to share my first ever webdesign project. This is my portfolio/showcase website, built predominantly with HTML CSS and some Vanilla JavaScript.

Initially I started this project in an attempt to use this website to apply for a software developer apprenticeship training program scheme but alas I couldn’t meet the deadline and I also felt that I should probably take some time to better understand JavaScript.

The website took me about two weeks to make and was a very educational and eye opening experience. It was also my first time experimenting with GitHub, its still a bit confusing to be honest but if anything this experience showed me that YouTube really is a great learning platform, normally I just use it to watch funny anime/cat videos but it has an amazing, helpful and very encouraging coding/software development community which was honestly a lovely side of YouTube to see.

In addition to this, I was intrigued and impressed with the amount of portfolio/showcase website examples I could find on YouTube. And also equally impressed with the amount of effects, transitions and website designs you can create with just HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I’m definitely feeling very inspired and intend to keep on learning and hopefully become fully fluent in JavaScript and other coding languages.

Long story short, am I upset I couldn’t meet the application deadline for the apprenticeship program? Not really. I feel this is exactly the experience I needed to see what I can improve in terms of coding and learning more languages and I’m feeling excited and inspired to go forward and create more webdesign projects.

Side note: funnily, the hardest part when building the website wasnt even the website itself, it was recording the voiceover for my intro vid and I'm even not someone who hates the sound of my voice (at least not usually) but I'd be lying if I said it was a easy and enjoyable experience.

I made my FIRST GitHub Repository and...

I'm so proud of myself I could cry!

Granted, all I did was click the create repository button, add a generic title like: First Github repository and the rest was history... and a lot of confusion BUT I DID IT and I'm so proud! 🤗
Confused but proud.

So what's the plan?

Great question. Well I've been trying to learn how to code for a while now and strangely enough after completing a Level 3 Diploma in software development in February this year, somehow I've never actually tried to build anything.

For some reason I've been stuck dabbling in multiple free online learning websites which are great, dont get me wrong. However, I felt it was time to actually give this web designing a go or else I'll be stuck just searching for more free online courses, signing up to them and most likely never really finishing them and if, by some miracle I do complete them, I still havent built an actual, even basic webpage.

So this is the plan:

Start using my Github account ✅
Create a repository ✅
Build/make a webpage ☐
Build another webpage ☐
And another... ☐
And one more for good measure ☐
Make updates to my Dev.to page each time to document this historic attempt at attempting to build websites. ☐

So about 5 projects in total and I think that will not only be beneficial learning experience but will be an opportunity for me to put myself out there and I fail (which I hope I wont but might do) at least we tried!

So thats the plan!

Hopefully this blog post will also add as a source of accountability for me

I dont really have a timeline but I'd say about 60 days should do it or maybe I'm being to naive? If any experienced individuals in coding or web design could let me know if this is doable, please let me know. Thank you in advance!

A Star Wars inspired dating app - my FIRST Hackathon experience

So sometime in May last year, I took a leap of faith and took part in a hackathon. The theme was Star Wars and the hackathon was called: Code Wars: The Hackathon Strikes Back

The duration of the hackathon was a week and being someone who lacks coding experience (as I have so openly mentioned in my last post), had never worked on a team project before and has no knowledge whatsoever regarding Star Wars (asides from the recent Star Wars movies, yknow the ones with Rey and Kylo Ren, y'know what I mean??), I thought to myself: why not?

Our team decided on a Star Wars inspired dating app called Wookie Woo and our decided upon team name was The Coding Resistance.

So I joined and couldn't really offer much to my team but they were lovely enough to allow me onboard their ship and embark on this journey through the galaxy of coding and beyond (I feel there's a Star Wars reference in there somewhere or maybe a Toy Story reference I dont know?)

However one thing I could offer (thankfully) was video editing and when the opportunity to make a short trailer for our dating app was presented, I put myself forward because again: why not?

And thus our website video was born. In the end I did do some coding for the Readme on Github and I'm grateful that my team were so gracious enough to let me join them despite my lack of coding knowledge. Thanks to that experience I've been endeavoring to get better at coding so next time I'll be able to do more than just video editing, I'll be able to contribute to the coding of the website and who knows, maybe both code and video edit cos for the umpteenth: why not?

And there you have it, the backstory to our website video. (I feel like I've messed up in explaining this experience in terms of the grammar or format of this post but I thought I'd write this regardless cos again: why not?)

As you can see I really dont require much convincing or have much of a general thought process when it comes to making a decision in trying out things, I like to think its an endearing quality but the older I get the more I feel I should be a bit concerned with my easily-swayedness tendencies.

Hi. I'm not sure how this works but it said I could make a first post so here goes:
How are you all doing?

I joined this community (which looks awesome btw) in the hopes of learning more in regards to coding. I have some basic knowledge of coding languages like Python and HTML and have taken part in a hackathon once upon a time.

Although I havent made any projects recently and I think thats something I need to work on so I'm going to try my best to do more of that.

If you have a project that you're working on and dont mind someone with little to no experience in coding, do let me know. As what I lack in experience I make up for in enthusiasm, words of encouragement and memes. Hopefully if you do let me join your team we get some sort of work done. In all seriousness I plan on getting better at coding so I'll have more to offer. Also if you require a video editor, I am very confident in my video editing capabilities and have made a video for a Star Wars hackathon which I took part in last year (I'll put the video in my next post).

Currently I'm self-studying Harvards CS50 intro to computer science and its very interesting. I hope to learn more and grow with you all. Thanks for making this community.

P.S I'm a huge Naruto fan (hence my cover image/gif), its a topic I'm extremely knowledgeable about but unfortunately cant add to my CV. Maybe I'll make a Naruto inspired website one day😅
