When Tech Got Personal

This is a submission for the 2026 WeCoded Challenge: Echoes of Experience

For most of my career, technology was strategy.

I spent over 20 years working in IT and cybersecurity, designing systems and helping organizations solve complex technical problems.

But in 2021, technology became something different for me.

It became personal.

My family was suddenly thrown into a medical crisis, and I found myself navigating the healthcare system as a caregiver. In those moments, one thing becomes clear very quickly:

Information becomes survival.

Doctor updates, lab results, medications, insurance questions—everything was scattered across different systems. None of it was organized in a way that helped caregivers think clearly during crisis.

As someone who builds systems, I realized something important:

Technology isn't just about efficiency.

It's about supporting people during the most critical moments of their lives.

During that time, I created a simple framework to help my family stay organized and make decisions. I called it CALM:

Collect the information

Analyze what it means

Leverage the insight

Mobilize the right action

This approach helped us move from chaos to clarity.

But it also revealed something bigger.

Many caregivers are navigating situations like this without access to tools that could support them.

That experience reshaped my work. Today I focus on building and teaching technology in ways that help people solve real-life problems.

Because sometimes innovation doesn't start in a lab.

Sometimes it starts in the middle of a life moment that changes everything.
