Fears of an Indie Maker

👋 Hello, it's Awais.

As a full-time open-sourcerer, I'm humbled to share that I've won awards for my open source work and prestigious titles like Google Developers Expert. But as an indie-maker just like any of you, I struggle with many basic things, have all kinds of fear, and haven't figured out life.

In this post, I share what it feels like being an Independent Marker, Full-time Open Sourcerer, and a course author. Especially nowadays, amidst the coronavirus outbreak.

I pre-launched a course NodeCLI.com — this is my first time pre-launching a course with pre-order stuff and all. And honestly, it was super scary to do that.

Takes a lot of guts. The constant fear of failure after taking people's money is not a good thing. As you may know, I launched VSCode.pro before this one, which has done very well. Over 14,192 developers learning power user workflows and switched to VSCode.

I wanted to launch this NodeCLI.com course weeks ago but just kept testing the entire setup, in hindsight I might have been dealing with imposter syndrome, procrastination, and fears of being an indie maker.

So, first of all, I'm happy to check-off that milestone — Woohoo! 🥳🥳🥳

  Fears of Indie Makers

As an indie-maker, I wanted to talk about this in a bit more open fashion. As a creator, we struggle with a lot of things. It's about time I share mine. Maybe some of you can relate.

  Fear of Failure

What if no one buys what I am building?

When I was working on my VSCode course I was afraid. What if I failed? What if everyone found out, my workflows aren't that great. You know maybe this just me who likes to create multiple cursors and write quickly.

  Fear of Success

What if I succeed?

Took about 1.5 years to launch my first course. I wrote about how I created my own course platform. Then when I launched my VSCode course, I had a great first two months; I hit about 900 sales and about USD 75,000 in revenue.

Then it hit me. The fear of success. Why did I succeed and now that I did, am I teaching something wrong. Because believe me, there were hundreds of people who tried to put me down.

I received emails, tweets from grumpy developers someone thought I launched the course they eventually wanted to launch, someone said "it's all available for free", and one person actually reached out to tell me how I'm the worst person on this planet.

I dealt with all of this in my way. I gave away thousands of free subscriptions and to date over USD 100,000 worth of course materials to people who need it. Donated to the Laptops for Developers initiative in Nigeria.

And some times, I felt so down, I just tweeted about it and the Dev community came to rescue. It's all kinds of weird. Creating products, putting yourself out there.

  Fear of Pre-launch & Pre-Order

Now that I am creating a new course on helping developers automate their repetitive grunt work with Node.js, I thought instead of waiting for the course to be complete, I should get out of my comfort zone and announce it right away.

But wait. This time it's different. Yes, I have done this before but I never really asked for developers to bet on my work in advance. That's a different animal. So, instead of announcing the course, I started testing it again and again.

  Fear's Side-effect: Over-Engineering

Yes, I found a couple of things that should have been fixed but hey it just delayed everything. I thought, not everyone would want to buy the course that's still being recorded. So, I built a way to help people subscribe for free.

That was actually a good idea, now that there are around 678 people subscribed to the list, I know for a fact that people want to learn how to build CLIs.

  Fear's Side-effect: Launching Free Stuff

Now that the NodeCLI site was ready. Instead of announcing it, I thought maybe I should build a couple more CLIs first. You know to show everyone that I know what it takes.

I have literally built hundreds of automation projects, most of them are open source. But have I really build a good CLI? I should build something super fancy right. How about graphs in the command line? And table layout with all the statistics of #COVID19 coronavirus disease.

…and that's exactly what I did. I went ahead, built, and released corona-cli. So, far I have spent several hundred hours improving (read as perfecting) the CLI.

Well, yes it has worked wonders. It ranked #2 most trending JavaScript project for about a week. I was listed as the #1 Top JavaScript Developer on GitHub trending and lived to tweet about it.

  corona-cli

Free and open-source:

🚀 Get worldwide Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) reporting

🤯 Active daily reporting of your country's COVID-19 statistics

🇺🇸 Get US States data for Coronavirus disease reports across the US

🗃️ Data: Country, Cases, Deaths, Recovered, Active, Critical, Per Million

📈 Charts: Plot statistics in the form of line charts both regular and logarithmic

📟 Sort:
cases
,
cases-today
,
deaths
,
deaths-today
,
recovered
,
active
,
critical
,
per-million

In hindsight:

🤯 Over 200 hours of development time

🧐 50 versions released  - changelog

😲 1 Billion+ API requests, over a million visitors, hundreds of forks

🤩 14 contributors, 40 closed issues, 25 accepted PRs, 12 open PRs, 20 open issues,

🙈 ONE single human developer, an indie maker managing all of this

💸 Made exactly ZERO x Hundred Thousand Dollars

…let me sum that up for if you missed the point here.

In an effort of releasing a pre-order / pre-launch stage course where developers could buy the course at 60% off and save a bunch of time automating grunt work, learning Node.js — I felt guilty and thought I must prove my worth. That led to the side-effects of over-engineering and launching stuff for free — that's all super helpful to the community, sadly doesn't help pay the bills.

  Quiet Announcement

What an oxymoron? That's seriously what I did. I announced my course super quietly there on Twitter in the form of a tweet.

Liquid error: internal

What I mean by quiet is that I didn't write a blog post about it, I have over 100k subscribers in my newsletter and millions of people visit my blog every year. I've been blogging for about 17 years now. And I'm still hesitant to announce this pre-order stage course to my subscribers due to the mix of all the fears I listed above.

I will eventually get to it. I have been preparing all week to send that email and I think next week is when that will happen. But for now, I felt so out of my skin that I had to write this post. And I also tweeted the following:

Liquid error: internal

I know I am not alone in this. I know many many of you face the same fears as I do. I wanted to document this to share my journey and to share that it's natural. Sometimes it sucks. And also to share with everyone that it takes a lot of work, guts, effort, and mental strength to put yourself out there. Go easy on creators, builders, indie-makers.

If you face the same fears. I bet it would help if we talk about it. Let's discuss that in the comments below. Feel free to share whatever is it that you struggle with as a developer.

And before my imposter syndrome gets the better of me, let me plug: If you ever wanted to build a CLI with Node.js to automate anything you could imagine, then signup at NodeCLI.com — I bet it's going to be worth it. By the end of the course, you'll build tens of automation projects.

This course is for both; absolute beginners (creating a CLI to keep track of the latest TV season episode you watched or finding out when's the next one due) to doing things like typing one word to reboot your WiFi router.

So, far that's all I gotta say. Share your war stories of being an Indie maker, I hope it inspires others to do the same.

Staying up-to-date with everything has become crucial nowadays whether it's your OS, a CLI, or your VSCode extensions. In this piece, I am going to show you guys an easy way to check your outdated VSCode extensions so you can then update them. Now without further ado, let's jump right in! 🙌🏻

  👨🏻‍💻 VSCode Outdated Extensions

Follow the steps below to see your outdated extensions.

🚀 STEP #1: Launch your VSCode

📦 STEP #2: Open Extension's Area located at the sidebar.

VSCode Command Line Interface

Just when I thought VSCode can't surprise me anymore, it came out of the closet with something awesome & shocked me again. Did you folks know VSCode offers a Command Line Interface (CLI) that lets you do a bunch of amazing VSCode stuff right inside your terminal.

Before we go into details, let's first activate this CLI.

  ⚙️ Setting Up the CLI

Open your VSCode. Press ⌘command + ⇧shift + p to open the Command Palette. Once it's open, search for shell command & then select the option:
Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH

When you are done, you will see a confirmation message at the bottom right corner of your VSCode & that's it. You have activated the CLI. 🙌🏻

  🚀 Code CLI

As the name suggests, every Code CLI command will start with code. For instance, if you want to get your VSCode version, you can just type
code -v
.

You can also open any folder in VSCode by just typing
code .
in any terminal & then pressing enter

Code CLI also allows you to open any file of your project from your terminal. Just write
code -r filename
in the terminal & you are good to go.

We have added
-r
to reuse the existing window instead of opening a new one. You can also use the command
code -d filename1 filename2
to compare to files with each other. ⚡️

These are just the tip of the iceberg. You can see all of the options that this CLI provides by writing
code --help
  in the terminal.

That's it for today's, folks! If you like this piece, please hit the like button, and if you have a question, just drop it down in the comments section below. 🙌🏻

🎩 Top 3 VSCode Themes in 2020

VSCode is the most popular code editor. The best part of VSCode is how extendable it is. It's actually a JavaScript and Electron-based application.

Today, I'm going to share three top VSCode themes you should try in 2020. This is an opinionated post on what I believe are the top themes in the VSCode marketplace.

  1. 🦄 Shades of Purple

If you haven't tried Shades of Purple till now then, believe me, you are in for a treat. The author, Ahmad Awais, has so meticulously designed this theme that it makes you fall in love with your code editor. The documentation itself is a piece of art. Millions of developers are using this theme. Over 100 five-star ratings. ⭐️

  2. 🦉 Night Owl

The number 2 on our list is Night Owl developed by Sarah Drasner who is the VP of the Developer Experience at Netlify. As the name suggests, this theme is specially designed for folks who work at night & need a theme that doesn't hurt their eyes. The theme also offers a lighter version for developers who are not into night mode. It has a five-star rating with over 400k+ installs. ⚡️

  3. 🎛 Material Theme

The last one we got is the amazing Material Theme designed by Mattia Astorino. This theme has over 8M+ downloads & 2M+ installs. It gives you a blend of dark green with light green & makes your code look so elegant. It got a four-star rating and definitely worth a shot.

🙌🏻 So that's all for today. Do let me know what your favorite VSCode theme is in the comment section down below. Also, if you are interested in saving tons of productivity hours on a weekly basis then check the VSCode.pro course.
🎨 Celebrating 1 Million+ Developer Users of My VSCode Shades of Purple Theme

This post is a part of my 2018 Year in Review: Open Source, Node.js, & Developer Relations. That's what you should read for the context.

That's right. Something incredibly amazing happened last year. After switching to VSCode, I struggled with finding a good theme that was actually built for VSCode and not just a theme migrated from another editor.

So, I built this suit of themes called
🦄 Shades of Purple
for VSCode, iTerm2, Hyper Terminal, Slack, AlfredApp, HighlightJS, Prism React, Code Surfer, and even got community contributions in the form of the same theme being ported for Cygwin and Konsole. Proud of it, AH!

✅ When you build something to solve your own problems and share it with others (especially as a Free & Open Source Software) chances are it can click well with them. This is exactly what happened here.

🤔 I was building the LMS platform to host my VSCode.pro course. I would code the same logic as the video end event in JavaScript, PHP, Go-lang, CSS, and HTML. So, a variable like
videoEnd
had representation in all these languages. Interesting?!

❌ Guess what? Every programming language would color the variables different. At one time I had yellow, blue, pink, red, and green colors as the syntax highlighting for the same damn variable across different languages. That would mess my brain up.

🤯 So, I went ahead and built a theme that's consistent enough across 30+ languages and is inspired by many great themes. I got a couple of designer friends to review the theme's design and worked on its accessibility.

⚡️ This project quickly became my favorite side-project and has helped me become a better programmer. I know the data types by their color (so when things go wrong my brain can pick it up before a linter does). Amazing!

😮 What happened with the Shades of Purple project was beyond any kind of growth I have ever seen for my open source software. Maybe it's the awesome VSCode community or just maybe for once I created something really useful. Who knows. Check out the stats:

  Over a million developer users of my theme — wow that puts things in perspective. I mean serious-f***-ly (pardon my french).

  I've released over a hundred version updates for the entire suite of Shade of Purple themes. All that in one year. #TrueThat!

  I feel like I connect with so many developers on a daily basis. A simple theme update can make their lives easier. They know I care.

  An average developer spends several hours daily writing code. So, thousands of developers use my theme for several hours daily.

  It feels like I've created sort of a Facebook (without creepy privacy issues of course) where all my users are my people (I mean developers). It feels good to keep improving it in an agile-manner.

  Check out the small bit of sorcery I pulled off for potential time-travel using my Emoji-log git commit spec to build an automated Changelog that's actually worth a read (excuse the course ad, gotta support all this free and open source work to put food on the table).

WOW! OK, maybe that's too much. But hey, I love it. Shades of Purple theme has created the sort of a geeky #PurpleRevolution. Everyone knows I love the purple color. Purple is genius.

Peace! ✌️

Go ahead and install the 🦄 Shades of Purple VSCode theme →

VSCode v1.31 just released has an amazing new feature. Now you can install Visual Studio Code Extensions without having to reload your VSCode instance. This has been the most requested feature of VSCode. Reload is also not needed when you uninstall or disable an extension if it is not activated.

🎸 (MUSIC PLAYING) Howdy-do, folks — This is Ahmad Awais! 👋 Back with another #OneDevMinute Guess what just happened? About 10.5 minutes ago the Visual Studio Code team — has just released The January update, version 1.31 of VS Code And it contains an amazing feature. I think it has been the most most requested feature… Now you can install extensions & do NOT have to reload VS Code at all How awesome is that. Let's dive in and see how it actually works You see I have this
.vue
file! It does NOT have a syntax coloring right now. So, I am going to install this very popular extension called "Vetur" — As you can see this Vetur extension is actually being installed — and as soon as it was installed you can see the Syntax Highlighting is now here! 💯 No need to reload VS Code whatsoever! Now this is a new feature. And it is going to be — you know— rough around the edges — but it is just amazing. So, this is new. Go ahead to this link and take a look at all of these new features. Especially the "No Reload on Extension Install" and "Tree UI Improvements" — and if you're a VS Code Theme author you might want to add colors for
listFiletWidget
which enables you to explore this Tree View in a better way I have just pushed out a new update of 🦄 Shades of Purple theme so go ahead and install it. And if you want to learn about more Power User Workflows for VS Code — Go ahead and take a look at VSCode.pro — It's my VSCode power user course which is helping Over 4,000 developers become master Visual Studio Code users! So check out my VSCode.pro Power User Course! And I'll see you in the next one. Peace! ✌️

VSCode Theme Highlight-able Indent Guides FTW 💯

This is just a small tip for VSCode.

Since VSCode
v1.23
got released you can style the active indent guides. 😲 VS Code can now highlight the active indent guides, only if your VSCode theme has support for that. I released a new version of my 🦄 Shades of Purple VSCode theme to support this feature.

So, as you move your cursor between various source code blocks. The color name is
editorIndentGuide.activeBackground
.

I shared this as a VSCode Tip →

  // Detect dark theme

All-new VSCode Settings Editor UI

Howdy-do, folks! 🙌

Over the past few months, VSCode team has been developing a GUI for editing settings. In the
v1.27
, the new UI settings editor has become the default editor.

  Settings Modification/Validation

Settings that have been modified are now indicated with a colored line, like modified lines in the editor. The gear icon opens a context menu with an option to reset the setting to its default value. Setting values are now validated, and any validation errors are displayed.

  Shows Matching Extensions

When you search in settings, our Bing-powered search service is still providing results that it thinks are relevant. Now, that service will also show you extensions from the Marketplace that have relevant settings. You will see a button at the bottom of the settings search results, Show matching extensions. When clicked, the Extensions view will open with the matching extensions.

You can still access the JSON settings editor, either by using the command
Open Settings (JSON)
or by changing your default settings editor with the
"workbench.settings.editor"
setting. But I suggest you create a keyboard shortcut by pressing
COMMAND (⌘) + k then COMMAND (⌘) + S
and search for
Settings JSON
and then set
COMMAND (⌘) + PERIOD (.)
as the shortcut for the old JSON editor.

🔥 Checkout the TIP →

  🦄 Shades of Purple VSCode theme

I just released a new version of 🦄 Shades of Purple VSCode theme to improve upon the styling for this new editor with:

📯 Theme Matching back/foreground colors
⚠️ Change Indicator — also decided to move from green to yellow color.

P.S. I am making every effort to launch my VSCode.pro this month. Bear with me and maybe signup for the update. Peace! ✌️

🔥VSCode Breadcrumbs Are Here, And I Love 'em!

Visual Studio Code's latest release
v1.26
dropped today and it's filled with great new features. And there's a nifty new feature of Breadcrumbs.

  What Are Breadcrumbs in the Context of VSCode?!

A breadcrumb navigation lets you jump to symbols and files in your workspace from the top without having to mess around with the file explorer — most helpful for small screens.

The editor now has a navigation bar above its contents - we call it Breadcrumbs. It shows the current location and allows you to quickly navigate between symbols and files. To start using breadcrumbs, enable it with the View > Toggle Breadcrumbs command or via the
breadcrumbs.enabled
setting.

When using editor tabs (default), breadcrumbs are displayed in a separate row below the editor title. If you are not using editor tabs, breadcrumbs show as an interactive file path next to the title. More…

I love this new feature coz I will be using less and less of the explorer sidebar. More screen space for good old code. Enable them by this setting
"breadcrumbs.enabled": true
.

  // Detect dark theme
  var iframe = document.getElementById('tweet-1029240599940136961-550');
  if (document.body.className.includes('dark-theme')) {
    iframe.src = "https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=1029240599940136961&theme=dark"
  }

To interact with breadcrumbs, use the Focus Breadcrumbs command or press SHIFT (⇧) + COMMAND (⌘) + PERIOD (.) and use arrow keys ARROW KEYS (←/→) to move around.

  🥖 VSCode Breadcrumbs Tips & Tricks

I have shared more details in the tips below:

✅ VSCode.pro/tip/15 → (Enable breadcrumbs in VSCode)

✅ VSCode.pro/tip/16 → (Shortcuts/Iteration tips & tricks)

  // Detect dark theme
  var iframe = document.getElementById('tweet-1029240610379755521-259');
  if (document.body.className.includes('dark-theme')) {
    iframe.src = "https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=1029240610379755521&theme=dark"
  }

  🦄 Shades of Purple
v2.5
→

The new breadcrumbs feature is stylable and every good theme should have it styled or it would look weird. Shameless plug here, I am the author of a VSCode theme called 🦄 Shades of Purple → which is being used by ~15,000 developers.

I try to keep it updated with every single VSCode major release, which is why there are 50+ releases so far. In the Shades of Purple
v2.5
update two major updates are:

🎨 Styles for VSCode Breadcrumbs

🗂 Styles for the upcoming VSCode Settings editor that's in preview at the moment, but it's styled in accordance with the 🦄 Shades of Purple theme →

Peace! ✌️

🔥 VSCode Grid Editor Layout Is Here!

VSCode just got June's update 🌞 v1.25 and finally it has the "Grid Editor Layout" feature, I was so looking forward to. I'm lovin' it!

🔥 Check: VSCode.pro/TIP/14 →
✅ Drag & Drop Grid Creator
🏗️ Horizontal/Vertical Layout
💜 Use on large Monitors or in Conf talks

You can now arrange 🆚Code's editors both vertically and horizontally and have more than 3 editors side by side layout.

This is a super fun feature for when you have a large external monitor and also when you are presenting at a conference.

Just drag and drop your files in up/down/right/left position to easily open up editors in the grid layout. There is also a predefined set of editor layouts in the new > menu. Use your code for good.

Liquid error: internal

VSCode Theme Highlight-able Indent Guides FTW 💯

VSCode
v1.23
just got released and now you can style the active indent guides. 😲 VS Code can now highlight the active indent guides, only if your VSCode theme has support for that.

So, as you move your cursor between various source code blocks. The color name is
editorIndentGuide.activeBackground
.

  🔥Shades of Purple for VSCode

As soon as this feature was released, I update my 💜Purple theme called Shades of Purple for VSCode which you can use right now and get most out of your 🆚Code :)

For the theme authors use this editorIndentGuide.activeBackground: Color of the active editor indentation guide.

For users, try Shades of Purple for VSCode

I shared this as a VSCode Tip→

I shared a GIF on Twitter.

  // Detect dark theme
  var iframe = document.getElementById('tweet-992141467228491776-810');
  if (document.body.className.includes('dark-theme')) {
    iframe.src = "https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=992141467228491776&theme=dark"
  }
