There are many prompt engineering techniques that make interactions with large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4, Gemini, or Claude more efficient. In today's article, you'll learn how to link multiple prompts together to create a seamless, step-by-step workflow for complex tasks with prompt chaining.

Prompt chaining helps maintain the context and control of the AI's output. Instead of overwhelming the AI with a single complex prompt, you guide it through a series of simpler, connected prompts.

Each response in a chain builds on the last, which leads to more accurate and coherent answers. By mastering this technique, you can handle intricate tasks more effectively and with greater precision.

⚛️ What is Prompt Chaining?

Remember the scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone where Hermione solves the potion puzzle?

First, she eliminates the poison.

Next, she identifies the wine.

She narrows it down to two potions. One lets them move forward. The other sends them back. Each step builds on the last. And this is pretty much how prompt chaining works.

In a nutshell, prompt chaining is an AI prompting technique where you connect multiple prompts or instructions in a sequence. This allows large language models to generate more accurate and relevant responses. It also makes it easier for AI to tackle complex tasks in bite-sized steps.

So, how does it work?

Let's say you're planning a new marketing campaign. This is an inherently sequential task.

You outline your campaign goals and identify your target audience. Next, you use the information to create tailored content for each marketing channel. Then, you schedule and launch the campaign across various channels, using the created content. And this is just the beginning.

If you try to throw all that at the LLM at once, it will hallucinate or lose context. But if you break the task down into compounding steps, the AI will approach the task gradually and build on its own output.

Each consecutive prompt in a chain instructs the LLM to "recycle" the result from the previous generation and incorporate it into the next. It also specifies the expected format for the output.

This approach is a more advanced version of other types of prompt engineering techniques like zero-few-shot prompting or chain-of-thought prompting. And it comes with a number of unique benefits.

Enhanced Control

Regular prompting techniques leave a lot to chance. Even with multi-level, context-rich prompts, AI can still occasionally veer off the intended path or produce inconsistent results.

With prompt chaining, you gain enhanced control over the output by breaking the task into smaller, manageable chunks and continuously guiding the AI with clear-cut, specific instructions.

Improved Reliability

Prompt chaining is excellent for tasks like content generation that require consistency and precision. Each response builds on the previous one, which helps maintain a uniform style and tone.

For instance, when writing marketing materials, you may start by asking the AI to specify the target audience. Next, you can ask it to generate a list of words and phrases that resonate with that audience. All that's left is to prompt the AI to use the information to draft a hyper-personalized piece of content.

Reduced Error Rate

LLMs may know a lot about the world, but they still occasionally trip when faced with simple tasks. Prompt chaining acts as an additional safety mechanism that helps you keep those mistakes at bay.

By breaking tasks into smaller steps, the AI retains context better, reducing misunderstandings. On top of that, each step in the chain is validated before moving on, which makes it easier to catch errors early.

Finally, tackling tasks in increments allows the AI to "focus" on one aspect at a time, improving attention to detail. It also ensures that the final result is logically structured and coherent.

A single-agent AI system is a type of agentic system built on top of one, specialized autonomous AI agent. It can work as a standalone tool or as part of an integrated platform and usually packages additional components like agent knowledge and integrations with external tools.

The main purpose of such a system is to perform tasks independently in self-directed loops. This is a step up from "traditional" prompt-based AI interactions where you continuously feed AI instructions.

Aside from partial autonomy, agentic systems are specialized and can provide more tailored responses than generalized chats with large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4o, Gemini, or Bard. So, what are AI agents?

On a purely technical level, agents are software entities that use a large language model (LLM) like GPT-4o to perform a variety of tasks. And the best part? They do so in self-directed loops.

Similar to "organic" teams, agents can take on distinct roles: a project manager, a content creator, a marketer... In short, whatever you need help with, there's an agent for that.

Taskade's AI agents are fully integrated, which means that they can seamlessly tap into your projects, tasks, and workflows. It's kist like an AI workforce that works side-by-side with you and your team.

But what makes our agents really unique is their ability to collaborate. Agents can "talk" to each other, exchange information, set goals, plan, and delegate work. We call this mechanism a Multi-Agent system.

👥 Creating a Team of AI Agents in Taskade

An AI team is a sum of its parts. Every individual agent you create can become part of one or more specialized teams, and each brings a unique set of skills and capabilities to the table.

Figuring out how to put together an entire team of AIs may be a bit too much to chew if you're just starting out. So we recommend starting small and gradually expanding as you get more comfortable.

Think about the critical tasks you need help with. Is it research, coding, or maybe project management? Once you have a clear understanding of the scope, you can start building a foundation for your team.

Build Your First Agents

Setting up artificial intelligence agents in Taskade is super simple.

First, go to the Agents tab in your workspace and click ➕Create agent.

Here, you have three choices:

✏️ Build an agent from scratch (advanced).
👤 Use a template.
🪄 Let Taskade AI generate one for you.

Let's choose Generate with AI, which is the most convenient way to create agents.

All you need to do to get started is provide a description of your agent. What kind of tasks do you want the agent to tackle? What role should it play? Describe this in plain words and press ⌨️ Enter to confirm.

Congratulations! You just created your very first agent. And here's the result. 👇

But to create a proper team, we need a few more. Repeat the process as many times as you need and create more agents in your workspace. Just make sure there is as little overlap as possible!

Add Agent Knowledge

Now that all our agents are in place, we need to teach them a few things.

Every agent comes with general knowledge about the world, which is perfectly sufficient for everyday tasks. But if you need help with something more specific, like drafting documentation for your products and services, you will need to fine-tune your agents using your own knowledge.

To fine-tune an agent, go to the Agents tab, select the agent, click Edit agent (top-right), and Knowledge.

👌 Zero-Shot Prompting

Zero-shot prompting is the most basic prompting technique. It involves asking the AI to perform a task or answer a question without providing any specific examples or additional context.

This approach is perfect for simple exchanges where no additional knowledge beyond the LLM's training data is needed. This can include ad-hoc tasks like translating text or answering questions.

For example, you may ask the LLM "what is the capital of Japan?" Or you might instruct the artificial intelligence tool to "translate the following paragraph into Spanish." Plain and simple.

The downsides? Don't expect deep dives or detailed analysis.

Think of it as asking someone who has read a lot of books to answer a question on a specific topic, one they haven't studied specifically. While the response may be correct in a general sense, it may lack the depth, accuracy, and specific context needed for a thorough explanation.

This is where one-shot prompting comes into play.

One-shot prompting takes things up a notch. It involves providing the AI with a single example to illustrate the task. The example helps the model to understand the requirements better.

So, how does it work?

Few-shot prompting gives the model a bit more help. It provides several examples to illustrate how the task should be executed. This gives the LLM more material to work with and lets it pick up on patterns.

Think of it like learning to play the piano. If your teacher gives you a few different songs to practice, each with varying levels of difficulty and styles, you'll start to understand the patterns and techniques needed. With just a few pieces, you'll get a sense of rhythm, fingering patterns, and musical expression.

For instance, if you're working on creating social media content with a unique voice, you might provide a few examples of posts that capture the desired tone and style. The source material will help the model better grasp the nuances of your brand's voice and tailor the content to the audience.

Agentic systems are the new black of AI. They're making interactions with artificial intelligence faster, more user-friendly, and refreshingly seamless. But how does an agentic system work? What makes it different from prompt-based approaches? Do you even need one in your workflow? (pro tip: you do).

🤖 What Are Agentic AI Systems?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, we should precede this question with another: "What are AI agents?" If you haven't read our previous articles on the topic (highly recommended), here's a tl;dr.

In a purely technical sense, AI agents are autonomous software entities designed to perceive, reason about, collaborate, and act within their environment to achieve specific goals.

Ok, but what does that mean exactly?

Take, for example, Tesla's Autopilot. It uses sensors and cameras to see the road, processes this info to understand what's happening, and then drives the car by steering, braking, and accelerating. Each individual system making up the Autopilot acts as an agent---one agent handles navigation, another monitors obstacles, and yet another ensures lane discipline.

All this happens without or with minimal human intervention --- the hallmark of agentic design.

With that in mind, grasping the essence of agentic system should be a tad easier.

An agentic system is an integrated environment of agents, tools, and data sources, with a large language model (LLM) like GPT-4o in the center, acting as the decision-making engine.

In medical lingo, the term "clone" refers to an exact genetic replica of an organism. Think identical twins, but made in a lab. It's about copying DNA, cell by cell, to produce a perfect biological duplicate.

To create your clone, open your workspace and go to the Agents tab at the top. From there, click ➕ New agent and choose Create from scratch.

You're now in the Agent Creator.

First, we need to name the clone and describe its overarching goals.

Do you want it to be laid-back or laser-focused?

Maybe a bit cheeky or strictly professional?

The INSTRUCTIONS field defines your clone's purpose, way of thinking, and style of responses.

Let's call the clone Alex, Assistant Project Manager.

With the basics out of the way, it's time to decide what Alex will help us with.

For that, let's go to the Commands tab in the sidebar on the left.

Commands are the "levers" that allow you interact with the agent and the agent to interact with your work. As you can see, each command consists of a few key elements:

🔤 Name: A unique identifier of the command.
👉 Prompt: Instructions that tell the agents what to do.
🛠️ Tools: Additional functionality like the ability to browse the web.
🚦 Mode: A method of executing the command.

For the purpose of this example, we created a handful of commands that will let Alex handle day-to-day project management tasks inside our projects.

Commands can cover anything from simple tasks like drafting email replies to major projects like writing a business plan for a bakery with pastries shaped like famous landmarks (not judging). 🥖🗼

Once commands are set up, it's time to train Alex. And this is where things get interesting.

🧠 Understanding Taskade AI's Knowledge Options

Think of your agent... erm, clone, as a child (these metaphors are getting out of hand, but we're sailing uncharted waters here). It has a basic understanding of the world, but you need to teach it the specifics.

We've already done half of the work by setting up the master prompt. Next, we're going to feed the clone a few bits and pieces representing your knowledge. That can include:

📑 Documentation of your workflows and processes.
📨 Emails or chat logs with conversation snippets that reflect your style.
🗂️ Records of past projects, including completed tasks and outcomes.

Since Alex is a project manager assistant, let's provide him with snippets of chat conversations with team members, records of past projects, and documentation of the processes used at the company.

First, go back to the Agents tab, click the three dots --- next to your clone, and select ✏️ Edit agent from the drop-down list. Then, go to the Knowledge tab in the sidebar on the left.

You can either upload files from your device, point to online resources, or add documents directly from your cloud storage. This is static knowledge that won't change as projects unfold.

Voila! Alex can now understand its role and context a little better.

But we're not done yet.

For Alex to be truly effective, we need to incorporate dynamic knowledge --- give him access to ongoing projects so he can monitor progress and offer suggestions based on real-time data.

You can select individual projects from your workspace that will serve as Alex's live data feed. Every time a new piece of information is added, Alex will automatically update his knowledge base.

Cloning yourself with AI is just the first step --- it's time to set your avatar loose. 🏃

🤹 Practical Applications for Your Digital Clone

Bounce ideas off "Yourself"

Let's say you're stuck on a project. You need fresh ideas. Your AI clone is already trained on your previous brainstorming sessions and creative workflows so it's a perfect partner for the job.

Stuck on how to launch a new product? Your digital self can suggest strategies based on past campaigns. It might pull up instances where influencer marketing or user-generated content worked well.
