I run a book club for developers, where we select a book to read together and discuss it in a Telegram group.

So far, we have read Clean Code (Jan), The Pragmatic Programmer (Feb), Don't Make Me Think! (Mar), Elon Musk (Apr), and Head First Design Patterns (May). June's pick is No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work. It's a pretty recent book (2019) and has been recommended a lot.

We'll have weekly sessions where we read the book together (2 chapters every week) on a Zoom call. Join us and become a better developer in 2020!

What is Hacktoberfest, anyway?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open-source software. It was started by Digital Ocean in 2014. People from all over the world contributed to make it a huge success. It is now a regular event in October every year.

Why should I participate?

If you are on the edge, and need some motivation / push to start contributing to open-source, this is the perfect opportunity for you. There are loads of cool swag up for grabs!

Swag, you say?

Yes! It varies from organization to organization. The most popular one is of Digital Ocean where you get a cool T-shirt on submitting 4 Pull Requests. You can check out http://devswag.io/hacktoberfest to keep tabs on all of the opportunities.

That’s awesome! I’m sold. How do I participate?

Register at https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/. You can check your status anytime at https://hacktoberfestchecker.herokuapp.com/.

Can you walk me through everything step-by-step?

Here’s an informative, beginner-friendly and FUN video on how to get started on your open-source journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUxy4WNdc0s

Do you have any collaboration opportunities?

Lots of them (glad you asked):

https://github.com/swapagarwal/JARVIS-on-Messenger/issues/559

https://github.com/swapagarwal/swag-for-dev/labels/good%20first%20issue

Submit geeky translations of English words at https://github.com/swapagarwal/geeksay

Submit introductory explanations to technical concepts at https://github.com/swapagarwal/awesome-eli5
5.Submit inspiring content at https://github.com/swapagarwal/awesome-inspiration
Let the Hacking Begin!

I’m aiming for merging 100+ PRs during this month, so if you’re new to open-source, it’s a good time to step up!

📚 Read all Medium posts for free

My current situation is this: I'm subscribed to a lot of newsletters that curate content in the tech domain and almost all of them are behind a paywall!

I want to get out of the Medium ecosystem, but I can't. Not everyone can be expected to pull off the FreeCodeCamp move (leaving Medium to their own publishing platform).
To make matters worse, Medium now puts all new stories behind paywall by default! And you know how we process defaults - we just leave them be.

I'm guilty of opening the posts in incognito mode to read them. To be honest, I started doing that subconsciously. Then I came across this tweet from Medium's CEO: https://twitter.com/ev/status/1100899021621583872

Excited, I opened Chrome after a long time. I'm used to developing extensions in Chrome (dates back to college days) and then port to Firefox.

The extension works in the background, w/o any user intervention, for all posts. It lets you read all Medium stories for free.

Check it out on Product Hunt -> 💯

🤗 Hugs / 🐛 bugs welcome!

It's that time of the year again... Hacktoberfest is back for the 5th year!

As a developer, nothing piques my interest more than developer swag! I made devSwag to scratch my own itch by starting a simple list on a GitHub repository (swag-for-dev). I’m excited to share devSwag, THE place to get notified about any new swag opportunities for developers. This would be quite useful this month as Hacktoberfest comes back for the 5th year.

TL;DR
Are you participating in
#Hacktoberfest
? If yes, this might be of interest to you: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/devswag-2

Going through my Product Hunt feed, I came across a comic that explained how HTTPS works!
Inspired by Brad Hodson's comment:

Great for non-tech people, appeals to kids if they need to learn about HTTPS. Something like this should exist for a lot of topics!

I went ahead and created https://git.io/eli5 to curate similar resources. Contributions are very welcome!! :D
