Many jobs are labeled remote. Very few mean remote-from-anywhere.

Here are practical checks that help you spot true remote roles faster and avoid common red flags:

1) Read the location line
Start with the simplest signal: is there a geography attached?

“US Remote,” “Remote (EU),” “LATAM only,” or “Remote within X countries” usually mean location restrictions.

If time zones are listed, that can also imply location limits, even when the role is technically remote.

Look for explicit language like: These aren’t guarantees, but they’re stronger indicators.

“worldwide remote”

“global remote”

“work from anywhere”

“fully asynchronous”

“distributed team across multiple countries.”

2) Treat salary as a clue, not a promise
Pay ranges can indicate the target hiring market.

A range like $100k–$250k often signals a US-centered market (not always, but often).

3) Watch the application form
Sometimes the job post is vague, but the application form tells the truth.

Questions like “Which time zone can you work in?” can reveal the required overlap.

If the location dropdown includes only a few regions (for example, US, Canada, Europe, Other), it often indicates there are specific geographic requirements.

Red flags that often signal US-only hiring include questions about US work authorization, a US tax ID, US-specific benefits, or requirements such as security clearance.

4) Check the company on LinkedIn
If a company truly hires globally, you can usually see it in their team.

Review employee locations. Even if LinkedIn shows only a few “top locations,” individual profiles often reveal the real geographic spread.

Search for profiles of people in your role (for example, Software Engineer) and see where they actually live.

If you see team members working from India, Asia, Africa, or other regions beyond the US and Europe, that’s a strong sign the company hires internationally.

5) Compare career pages and external job boards
Job descriptions are sometimes more detailed on the company website.

Look for mentions of an asynchronous culture, a multinational team, or the number of nationalities represented at the company.

Check LinkedIn job posts and external job boards as well – they sometimes include location constraints that aren’t mentioned in the official posting.

6) Company size can be a quiet signal
Certain company sizes tend to correlate with how feasible “remote from anywhere” hiring really is.

Teams in the 50–200 or 200–500 range are more often flexible enough to hire globally without heavy bureaucracy.

Very small companies (under 30 people) often avoid true global hiring because legal and operational overhead is too high. Very large companies (1,000+ employees) usually introduce regional payroll, compliance, and tax constraints that limit global flexibility.

7) Pay attention to contractor language
Many genuine remote-from-anywhere roles rely on contractor models.

Phrases like “full-time contractor”, “independent contractor”, “B2B contract” or “global contractor” often indicate the company is set up to hire across borders. This isn’t ideal for everyone, but it is a common structure for global remote teams.

8) The business model matters
Some industries are structurally more open to global hiring.

Web3, crypto and trading infrastructure companies often default to global talent, normalize asynchronous work, and avoid headquarters-centric hiring.

Developer tools, infrastructure, databases, and platform engineering companies also tend to support remote-from-anywhere setups. Their internal users are developers, documentation is central, and async collaboration is already part of how they work.

9) Repeating language in job descriptions
Certain phrases show up again and again in truly global roles.

Look for language like: These usually signal expectations that fit remote, location-independent work.

“distributed team”

“async-first”

“across time zones”

“written communication”

“ownership”

“autonomy”

“self-directed”

“docs-first”

10) The ATS can tell you more than the job post
Companies hiring globally often use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that don’t enforce country restrictions by default, such as Ashby, Workable, Recruitee, Lever or Greenhouse.

More enterprise-focused systems like Workday, SuccessFactors, or Taleo are rarely used for true remote-from-anywhere roles. Their absence is consistent with remote-native startups and scaleups.

Remote-from-anywhere roles do exist, but they’re a narrower category than most people expect. Companies still have to balance time zone collaboration, employment compliance, payroll and security requirements.

Thinking about moving to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 for work? Here are some helpful resources to get you started:

 ✅ Destination Research

To relocate wisely, start by doing some research.

🪪 Visa options | Official site

🧾 Taxes

🧾 30% ruling | More details

💶 Take-home pay calculator

🛒 Cost of living

🏥 Healthcare + insurance options

📊 Average salary

💻💰 Developer salaries in the Netherlands | TechPays

❓ Ask questions about the Netherlands: Reddit /r/Netherlands | Reddit /r/NetherlandsHousing

✅ Job Search (Companies Hiring from Outside the Netherlands)

If you’re looking to relocate for a tech job, you’re in luck—many companies in the Netherlands actively hire international talent and offer visa/relocation support.

For example:

Picnic Technologies

Catawiki

Swisscom DevOps Center Rotterdam

GreenFlux

WAES

✅ Job Search (Local Job Boards)

Here are some local websites to explore job opportunities:

Nationale Vacaturebank – One of the largest national job boards

Werkzoeken – Vacancies across industries

IamExpat Jobs – English-speaking jobs for expats

Brainport Eindhoven – Tech & IT jobs in the Eindhoven region

Indeed NL and Monsterboard

I’m continuing my new initiative, The Global Move 🌍, for those seeking to move abroad for work in tech.

✅ A weekly handpicked list of 100+ tech jobs with visa/relocation support

Relocation to a foreign country for work can be very exciting and lead to unique opportunities that couldn't be accessed in your home country. At the same time, it's a real challenge – I know it firsthand. You mind becomes inundated with questions:

How to prepare a resume?

Where to find companies that hire foreign talent?

What relocation assistance is typically provided?

How to get a work visa?

And the list goes on!

That's what inspired me to start a public repository on GitHub with useful reading material, resources, and tools for an international tech job search.

Any suggestions regarding the content? What tools/websites/articles/blog posts are worth adding to the existing list?

PS: If you love the idea, please give the repo some ⭐ stars. It will be a great motivation for me to continue to enrich it. Thanks!

Effective Search Tactics for Developer Jobs

As tech has become an essential part of almost all industries, developers are in high demand. This doesn't make it easier to find a suitable position, though, and sending out applications can be very time-consuming and often an unsuccessful process. Even just finding positions that fit your skills and interests can be difficult.

If you're looking for the perfect role, diversifying your search strategy will help you discover options you may have missed. Here are some tactics for hunting for the ideal developer job.

Broaden your horizons and then narrow your scope

These sound like opposites, but they're actually complementary. As technology expands into more and more industries, you may find the position you're looking for outside a traditional tech company. Consider what field you're interested in and what kind of work you'd like to support as a developer. Then it's time to narrow your scope back down to identify the niche you're interested in, so you can put your energy into applications for roles you would be happy to have. Consider these questions before you begin your search in earnest:

Are you more interested in small startups or large companies?

What industry do you want to be a part of?

What's your preferred tech stack?

What specific roles and responsibilities are you interested in?

Do you need to stay in a particular location, or are you willing to move or work remotely?

By first zooming out and then focusing in, you'll be able to find tech job openings that you're actually interested in and qualified for, which will get you faster results.

Network and stay in touch with colleagues

Networking is standard advice for a reason—it's a great way to learn about new positions and opportunities that may not ever be available on public job listings. Recruitment at companies often starts long before a job listing is made public, through people's connections and recommendations. These positions may be filled before they're even posted on a job search website.

There are many ways to connect with people in your industry, both online and in person. Attend conferences and workshops, as well as more casual meetups and other opportunities. The goal here is not to laser focus on the people you want to ask for jobs. It's about making long-lasting connections that can serve as contacts and referrals in the future. When you meet people at these events, add them on LinkedIn and follow up with them about things you discussed previously.

Let people know you're on the job hunt

Don't limit your networking to people in the industry either. Your family and friends are also useful resources. By letting people know you're on the lookout for a new job in a particular area, you're opening up your options as there's often someone who knows someone whose company is hiring.

Target the right people in the companies you're interested in

Put together a list of companies you're keen on working for, with a focus on ones that currently have open tech roles, though you can also include your dream companies even if they don't have any positions listed. Then do your research: use the company's website and LinkedIn to find the relevant people at those companies to contact directly. Connect with them on LinkedIn and let them know that you're interested in a specific role. Thank them for accepting your connection request, and send along your resume as well as any other relevant info, such as a link to your GitHub profile or personal site. Let them know you'd like to meet and when you're available. You can also reach out to former colleagues or friends at places you're interested in and ask them if they can put in a word for you.

This can take more time and effort than simply putting in job applications through a job board, but this personalized approach can get you through to the interview stage more easily.

Maintain your LinkedIn profile

Completing your profile on LinkedIn and making sure all your information is up to date will help you out a lot. LinkedIn is used by 90% of recruiters in many industries to search for qualified candidates, and you'll be 40 times more likely to get opportunities from these recruiters if your profile is complete.

Here are some tips to get your LinkedIn profile in shape:

Craft a strong headline for your profile. This headline appears in Google search results, so making sure that it's targeted for the roles you want will help catch the eye of recruiters and employers.

Write a good summary that includes keywords about your skills and the roles you're interested in. Your summary should make the right people want to click into your profile and learn more about you.

Use relevant keywords throughout your profile. Be consistent and exact, with a focus on the skills and experience that you want to highlight as being relevant for the position you want.

Let a recruitment agency search for you

Recruiters are often very helpful for companies as they search for the best candidates for their openings, and as a job seeker, you can also benefit from going through a recruitment agency. You will be able to give all your information to someone who has an inside track to the kinds of IT jobs you're looking for, and the recruiter can also provide you with all the relevant details of a company so you can decide whether they're a good fit for you.

Tailor your resume for each application

Finally, once it's time to apply, take a bit of time to adjust your resume to suit each position. You don't have to do a full rewrite, but it's a good idea to make sure you've focused on the most relevant experience and included keywords that match the ones in the job description. This is especially important for online applications that are going to be screened for matches. A resume that is tailored for the position will often put you a step ahead of other applicants.

By building up a strong and easily tailored resume, as well as following the other strategies shared here, you will be on the right track to find your next developer job quickly.

PS: Along with the team at Relocate.me, we've created a Telegram channel where we regularly share tech job opportunies with relocation assistance available, international job search tips, relo stories, and more. Consider joining 🙂

Coined in 2013 by a host of an American financial TV show, the acronym FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google) was initially meant to designate the 5 companies with the strongest stock market appreciation in the USA. However, the meaning of this abbreviation became different for techies, who often use it to describe the most sought-after tech employers.

Working for a FAANG company means competitive compensations, challenging projects, and extra benefits (such as education and healthcare coverage), as well as extended opportunities for networking and career development. So, it's no wonder that for many engineers getting an offer from a FAANG company is a major achievement. The cherry on top, although all of the 5 companies are headquartered in the USA, engineers from Europe or Asia don't have to relocate to another continent to land an IT job at a FAANG company. All of them have a broad network of offices in Europe with plenty of software engineering jobs offered continually. In fact, due to the complicated visa application process in the United States, FAANG jobs in Europe seem even more attractive to most engineers than comparable jobs in the US.

In this article, we gathered all the information about FAANG jobs in Europe so that you could see where your technology stack would be the most valuable and maybe even find a life-changing job opportunity!

Facebook Tech Jobs in Europe

Countries: Ireland, the UK, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Denmark (data center), Sweden (data center)

Relocation package: Lump sum payment, services of a moving company, car/home rental assistance, flight coverage, temporary housing, health insurance, networking events

Most common projects: Facebook core, WhatsApp, Instagram, AR/VR (Oculus, Portal)

Working on online products used by 3 billion people worldwide sounds like a notable career advancement for everyone. But for Facebook employees, it's the everyday reality. The company is constantly hiring tech talent to develop and maintain all the Facebook.com features, as well as other world-famous projects like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Portal (the smart video calling app). In addition to top-notch projects, Facebook employees also point out the smooth onboarding process, rewarding compensations, ability to switch between teams or projects quite easily, and friendly atmosphere in the company.

Facebook is always welcoming Android and iOS engineers, AI/ML engineers, network engineers, and Python/C++ developers (for AR/VR projects). Moreover, Facebook's technology stack also includes PHP, Ruby, C#, and Java. If any of these skills are present in your resume, you may certainly become a new member of the Facebook team!

Eager to learn more about tech jobs at Facebook? Follow this link.

Amazon Tech Jobs in Europe

Countries: Germany, the UK, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, Poland, Romania, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden

Relocation package: One-time payment or relocation package (travel costs coverage, home and car rental for a couple of months, a small cash bonus)

Most common projects: Amazon marketplace, AWS, Alexa

What started as a book and music selling marketplace in 1994, became one of the world's top tech employers in 2021. With around 1M+ employees in its offices worldwide, Amazon offers plenty of jobs in Europe for software engineers, machine learning professionals, and cloud experts, as well as embedded engineers and data scientists. Judging from multiple reviews, among the things Amazonians truly value are the challenging projects, being surrounded by smart and driven people, competitive compensations, and unlimited room for growth. Hence, it's no wonder that Amazon took the 2nd position in Forbes' annual list of the world's best employers in 2020.

Does this sound like a dream spot for you? Discover more about Amazon tech jobs in Europe in this article.

Apple Tech Jobs in Europe

Countries: Ireland, Germany, the UK, Spain, Austria, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Czechia, Sweden

Relocation package: Lump sum payment + moving assistance

Most common projects: Siri, Hardware, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV

Apple's working policy is probably the most secretive among all the FAANG companies. It is prohibited for most employees to discuss work-related stuff, even with their families! However, that doesn't make Apple less popular with hardware and software engineers who are looking for new opportunities. On the contrary, the company is highly valued by its employees, thanks to excellent internal communication, decent base pay, amazing benefits & friendly co-workers.

If you have extensive knowledge of Python (both for Machine Learning and Backend Development), Java, JavaScript (Angular, NodeJS, Express), C/C++ (mostly for hardware-related applications), and/or Objective-C, the chances are high that you will find a suitable job at Apple. Head this way to read more about tech jobs at Apple's European offices.

Netflix Tech Jobs in Europe

Countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, France

Although Netflix has its offices in the 5 above-mentioned European countries, for some reason, there are no available tech jobs at the company's European offices right now. Hopefully, they will appear soon since Netflix is known for its upbeat and creative working environment, plenty of opportunities for learning, and open communication. So, if you're committed to building your career at one of the FAANG companies, browsing jobs at Netflix from time to time might be rewarding, especially if working at a large-scale company with a startup atmosphere is something you're looking for.

Google Tech Jobs in Europe

Countries: Ireland, the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Lithuania, Czechia, Romania, Greece, Hungary

Relocation package: Lump sum payment or relocation package (travel and moving expenses coverage, temporary housing, car rental, visa assistance, pet relocation, the assistance of a moving company)

Most common projects: Google Search App, Google Cloud, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Chrome, YouTube Technology Services, Google Meet

Among all the FAANG companies, Google is present in the biggest number of European countries; therefore, the variety of projects it offers to Europe-based teams is impressive. Add to this multiple perks that can hardly be found elsewhere (such as high-quality educational programs, healthcare coverage, and free lunches), and you will get a top-notch employer that is annually listed on the top positions of Glassdoor’s and Fortune’s ratings of the best places to work.

You might be one step from becoming a Googler if you're a passionate Java, C++, Python, or Go engineer, data scientist, or machine learning engineer with expert knowledge of NLP and/or speech/audio/video processing. However, Google also offers technology-agnostic positions. This guide will help you find a vacancy at Google Europe that is fit for you.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Hopefully you found the article useful.

By the way, if you feel like you need some preparation before getting a resume done, passing an interview, or negotiating a salary, the tips and tricks in this knowledge base might come in handy.

Although many workplaces have become much more diverse over the past few decades, the vast majority of software engineering, cybersecurity, and other tech jobs are filled by men. However, a diverse workforce (especially in the IT industry) means a richer company culture, happier and more productive employees, and the ability to innovate products that appeal to all sectors of society.

While women are still very much under-represented in the tech industry, there has been a small but steady increase in the number of female technologists over the past years, according to AnitaB.org’s latest report, which is promising.

By the way, did you know that Bulgaria has the highest proportion of female ICT specialists in the EU?

A lot of progress has already been made in terms of diversity but unfortunately we still have a long way to go. With the help of ground-breaking, global organizations and initiatives that support the promotion of women in the workplace, females are being encouraged more than ever before to consider careers in STEM, and tech employers are being encouraged to employ women.

Here are just some of these organizations and initiatives:

Global 🌍

WomenTech Network

WomenTech Network believes that women are just as (if not more so) competent as their male counterparts in the tech industry. They regularly arrange networking events and provide mentorship programs and opportunities for professional growth for female tech professionals throughout the world.

Women Who Code (WWCode)

Women Who Code was started back in 2011 and initially served the organization’s local community. Today, WWCode has a whopping 230,000 members—software engineers, data scientists, solutions architects, and more—in 122 countries and shows no signs of slowing down. Joining Women Who Code will give you access to coding resources, a global community, and the WWCode job board.

Tech Ladies

Tech Ladies is a leading platform that provides women with information on up and coming positions in the tech industry and provides useful information on a wide range of tech companies.

Girls Who Code

Girls Who Code understands that careers in the tech industry still seems unattainable or unattractive to many young women. Their goal is to change this perception and to change the image of a programmer.

Women in AI

Women in AI provides support and mentorship to females in the field of AI. This popular organization is the first of its kind to support women in AI and boasts over 5,000 members in more than 100 countries. They have played a large role in promoting more diversity in their field.

Women in Data (WiD)

With more than 30 global chapters and over 12,000 community members, WiD is a non-profit international organization that exists to increase gender diversity in the field of data science and analytics.

Ascend

If you are a female tech professional, joining Ascend is free of charge and will provide you with excellent support and information on how to excel in your field.

Women in Tech

With members in more than 100 countries, Women in Tech is dedicated to closing the gender gap in the tech field. Their global reach means that they are able to support the education and training of women who wish to pursue tech careers.

Ada’s List

Ada’s List was initially founded to provide a supportive and useful community for women in the tech field. Although they never dreamed that they would become as large as they are today (with over 7,500 members), they simply wanted to help women find great jobs, suppliers and vendors, in addition to providing great quality advice.

PowerToFly

Whether you are a young, female tech professional or an experienced tech leader, PowerToFly has something for all women in the tech industry. They have many useful resources, information on new jobs and a community of like-minded professionals.

Elpha

Elpha is a community of women professionals in the tech industry. On this platform, women can ask important questions, join their mentorship program, and encourage one another in a supportive environment.

Rails Girls

Born in Helsinki, Rails Girls is nowadays a global movement designed to encourage more women and girls to get involved in coding. Since 2010, they have arranged hundreds of free Ruby on Rails workshops around the world.

PyLadies

With over 100 local Meetup groups, PyLadies is a global community for aspiring and experienced female developers who are passionate about the Python programming language.

Geek Girls Carrots

Geek Girls Carrots is one of the biggest communities of women in tech. Established in Poland in 2011, this organization now operates all around the world. Through meetups, tech workshops, and other events, it is striving to bring more women into the tech workforce.

Girls in Tech

Like other initiatives and organizations mentioned in this list, Girls in Tech is working to eliminate the gender gap in tech. Since 2007, it has grown into a global community with more than 50 chapters and over 100,000 members around the globe. Programming and events vary by chapter based on local interests and needs. Membership is free.

LeanIn.org

Founded by Rachel Thomas and Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg in 2013, LeanIn.org is a movement dedicated to helping women achieve their ambitions. One of its key initiatives—Lean In Circles—provides an opportunity for tens of thousands of women around the world to meet with peers, get/give peer mentorship, and sharpen their skills. Lean In’s partner network now boasts over 1,400 companies and organizations, including LinkedIn and Salesforce, who are publicly committed to gender equality.

AnitaB.org

With a few dozens of local communities in different countries, AnitaB.org is rightly considered one of the leading organizations for women in technology. All its events and programs are aimed at promoting diversity and helping women to achieve success in tech.

Ladies that UX

Ladies that UX is a welcoming and collaborative community of women who work in UX. They meet monthly to talk about UX and exchange knowledge. The community has a growing number of local groups based in different cities worldwide, including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Boston, Seattle, and Melbourne.

Women Who Tech

Women Who Tech works to get more women-led startups funded. Through the Women Startup Challenge, an 8-week virtual program, they provide funding, mentoring, and other resources for women entrepreneurs building innovative tech products to solve real-world issues.

Latinas in Tech

CodeOp

Since 2018, they have delivered more than 200 workshops globally, trained over 20,000 people, and partnered with some of the world’s top companies like Google and Vodafone. The network currently has chapters in the UK and Canada.

Australia 🇦🇺

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed how many organizations do business, including the recruiting and onboarding process. While most companies have had to put their international hiring plans on hold, it’s still possible to land a great tech job abroad with a relocation package included. In many cases, this job will be remote for now as the pandemic continues, but eventually, you’ll have the opportunity to relocate and work on-site at the company’s office.

5 Strategies for a Successful Job Search in Tech

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the job search, but it is still possible to find a rewarding tech job. To make your job-hunt successful, utilize multiple strategies at the same time. Let’s take a look at the most effective ones.

Invest Time in Updating and Improving Your Resume—It’ll Pay Off.

Most job-seekers don’t do an update and improve their resume so that you will be ahead of the curve. On average, you have seven seconds to catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring manager. Follow these tips if you want to make your technical resume stand-out. Besides, there’s a variety of resume enhancement services available that can significantly assist you in achieving that goal.

Make a List of Companies You’d Like to Work for and Then Connect with Their HR People.

Develop a list of potential employers (AlphaSights, Bending Spoons, Showpad, etc.). Then, hop on LinkedIn and search for your target company. Find someone from the hiring team to send your resume. Ideally, this should be someone who recruits for your desired position. Otherwise, reach out to one of the team members, state what position has caught your attention, and ask to connect you with the appropriate person.

A Quick Tip: Usually, you’ll be able to find recruiters’ contact info on their LinkedIn profiles. If not, do a quick Google search (e.g., name-of-the-recruiter@company.com) to find the necessary email address.

Go the extra mile and write a code sample for your target company, and send it together with your resume, a link to your active GitHub profile/personal website/tech blog, and a cover letter to the relevant person. (Yes, many tech companies still require a cover letter, at least according to this research.)

Alternatively, use LinkedIn to find your old friends and connections that are currently working for the companies you’re looking to get a job at and ask if it’s possible that you can be referred to their company.

Fill Out Your LinkedIn Profile Completely.

90% of recruiters, both in and out of the tech industry, use LinkedIn to find and vet candidates. If your LinkedIn profile is 100% complete, you’re more likely to be on the radar of recruiters.

Users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn.

Pay special attention to your profile headline because it’s the text that gets shown in search results for LinkedIn and Google.

Put effort into writing a strong, engaging summary, as it’s one of the first things recruiters/hiring managers see when they visit your profile. These tips will help you craft an effective one.

Make sure your profile, especially your headline and “About” (summary) section, contains the right keywords. Recruiters strongly rely on Boolean searches and keywords when looking for potential candidates for their job openings. Here’s an example of a Boolean search string used to source Python developers:

(programmer OR developer) AND python AND (mysql OR postgresql) AND (django OR flask) AND (chef OR puppet OR sentry)

Network! Don’t Rely Only on Online Job Searches.

A great way to connect with interesting people from within your field is by participating in online and offline meetups, workshops, conferences, and the like. Even if this doesn’t lead to a job right away, they may be useful in the future. Add the people you meet on LinkedIn.

Networking is important for a number of reasons. The first, of course, is that it’s an important way to find out about job openings. A great many jobs are never posted publicly. If you’re strictly relying on publicly posted ads, you’d be missing out on a high percentage of opportunities.

Find relevant LinkedIn, Facebook, Slack, Gitter, or other online communities to join. Online communities are also places where you can make useful connections. Moreover, virtually all of them have a section/channel that’s dedicated to employment opportunities.

Make connections, build relationships with those connections—and then “sell” your resume. These tips will get you started.

BTW, along with the team at Relocate.me, we recently created a Telegram channel where we regularly share tech job offerings with relocation assistance as well as interesting, relevant content. Feel free to join.

Search for Job Listings on Various Websites. Apply Directly Through Company Websites.

Search for job vacancies by using traditional job search websites, niche job boards (e.g., for finding a tech job abroad, social networking sites, etc. However, when it comes to applying for jobs, try to do it on company websites. When you apply for a position on the company website, your resume goes directly to the recruiter/hiring manager of that company. Moreover, it can be noticed by more than one team member.

Of course, the success of your job-hunt depends on a multitude of factors. These aspects, including the time of day you apply for a job. However, I do believe the above tips, in conjunction with a strong resume, will help you find your next challenging role in tech faster.

10 Data-Driven Ways to Use Your Developer Resume to Get Interviews

Now, with the job market evolving extremely rapidly, writing an effective resume has become both an art and a science. Some companies are continuing to hire. However, others have had to reduce their workforce, like Airbnb, in addition to an increasing number of businesses shifting to remote work—permanently. That being said, the demand for tech talent remains high.

Based on data from over 30,000 developer resumes analyzed by CV Compiler, (an automated tech resume reviewer), here are ways to upgrade that should lead to getting more job interviews:

You Want to Make Your Resume Stand-Out From the Rest

1) Stay away from resume templates that are available to anyone on the web. Your resume should look unique, thus ensuring more than a cursory glance.

2) Make your resume sound like a person wrote it, not a machine. Write as you would talk. Make it engaging and enjoyable to read, both for you and your potential employer. Incorporate some interesting, work-related facts about yourself. For instance:

Covered 2M lines of code with unit tests since 2017

3) Wherever possible, back up your accomplishments with numbers: e.g., improved app performance by 40%, achieved 300k plug-in downloads in a span of 3 months, reduced page load time from 20 seconds to 5 seconds, and the like. Listing your achievements will highlight your ability to deliver results.

Back in 2014, Google’s former SVP of People Operations Laszlo Bock offered the perfect formula for listing your accomplishments in a measurable, impactful way:

Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z].

Despite having been in tech recruitment since 2008, I’ve rarely seen this while reviewing developer resumes, testifying that backing up your accomplishments with numbers is a surefire way to differentiate your resume from your competition.

4) Enrich descriptions of the things you’ve done with “power words,” making your descriptions much more compelling. Here are some excellent options, handpicked from over 1,000 software engineering job listings published on Relocate.me, AngelList, Indeed, and similar websites:

automated, complex, concurrent, core, distributed, fault-tolerant, fully responsive, highly available, large-scale, maintainable, multi-threaded, reliable, resilient, resource-intensive, reusable, robust, scalable, secure

5) Personalize your resume with a short cover letter that shows you care and know the company you’re applying to, and, as IDEO’s former Director of Talent Virginia Martinez notes in one of her blog posts, “...what matters most is that you show a little personality. After all, we want to hire you, not your resume.”

You Want Your Resume to Be Competitive

6) Don’t overly detail your history; your resume is a marketing tool, not a bio. Yet at the same time, you don’t want it to be too short. Give the recruiter/hiring manager what they’re looking for—a brief overview of your relevant skills, knowledge, experience, and achievements.

7) Write a pithy summary or write no summary at all—no soft skills or buzzwords. Adding “passionate,” “proactive,” “good team player,” “results-driven,” “hard worker,” and other cliched resume words serves little purpose, as recruiters see them in virtually every resume/summary section.

The experience and accomplishments you add to your resume should showcase that you’re a hard worker, so there’s no need to add “hard worker” to your resume.

Describe what makes you unique and sets you apart in 3-4 sentences.

8) Incorporate relevant keywords, especially those listed in the vacancy, throughout your entire resume. This is essential in getting past the initial resume screening.

9) Show your “passion” by mentioning your open-source projects, providing a link to your active tech blog. You can also include a link to your stunning GitHub, Stack Overflow, or HackerRank profile.

10) Don’t describe your responsibilities. List your accomplishments and achievements. Start each with a strong action verb: e.g., automated, improved, developed, re-engineered, implemented, achieved, reduced, and so on. Use the right verb tense for past and current positions. Using bullet points makes it easier to read and assess.

Last but not least, include a link to your LinkedIn profile so a recruiter or hiring manager can verify you are who you claim to be.

Of course, resume expectations vary wildly, depending on the country, the company, and the recruiter/hiring manager perusing your dev resume. However, I do believe the preceding tips will help transform your resume from ordinary to attention-grabbing, helping you land, if not a job at your dream company, then at least a slew of promising job interviews.

Writing a resume that really stands out doesn’t need to be a daunting task.

In one of my previous blog posts, I talked about ways to improve your resume’s bullet points. Here, I’d like to focus on the adjectives that you can use to make your experience descriptions even more attention-grabbing.

Along with the team at CV Compiler, a tech resume analyzer, we perused over 1,000 current vacancies at growing tech companies from around the world. Here’s a list of the modifiers that are used most frequently:

Now, let’s see how you can incorporate these “power” words into your resume to describe the things you’ve done in a more compelling way.

Developed automated analysis system from scratch capable of processing 15 million statistical operations per day.

Built a highly available, fault-tolerant microservice architecture based on Go, Docker, Kubernetes, gRPC, and GraphQL.

Designed and implemented a modular, extendable, and easily maintainable architecture for the overall system.

Built and led a team of 7 high-performing software engineers.

Self-taught software engineer with 5+ years of experience developing robust Spring-based Java back-end applications for high-volume businesses.

Led the development of XYZ’s scalable team messaging/collaboration platform for asynchronous communications.

Refactored large legacy application into reusable architecture.

Designed a distributed system for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets.

Developed a 100% automated scoring system for evaluating incoming resumes.

Set up highly available, fault-tolerant infrastructure using AWS.

Implemented Solr cluster for near real-time search, resulting in a 20% reduction in search time.

For these adjectives to be effective, combine them with strong action verbs and numbers, as in the examples above.

Hopefully, this quick, practical guide will give you the boost/inspiration you need to spice up your resume.

In the middle of 2020, working as a software developer remotely is now the norm, not a perk.

To help you succeed as a remote programmer, here at CV Compiler, we analyzed about 1,000 remote vacancies, (~330 job listings for each group), to define the skills employers are demanding from remote developers right now.

For this analysis, we took job postings from Hacker News, Stack Overflow, Dev.to, AngelList, and similar websites, as well as career pages of various tech companies. Also, we took into account only the unique entries of the terms — no more than 1 entry per vacancy. In the parentheses, we provide the percentage of vacancies in which a particular keyword was met.

Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Technologies In-Demand for Remote Front-End Developers

The following chart represents the technologies employers expect remote Front-End programmers to be well-versed in, as of March 2020:

The terms Testing (38%) and Design Patterns (43%) were not included in our chart, but they were even more popular than Angular (37%), so the best coding practices like TDD (12%) are definitely not just buzzwords for modern employers. As for the Unit Testing (16%) tools, the most popular ones were Jest (10%), Cypress (10%), Mocha (10%), and Jasmine (8%).

The presence of such terms as Node.js (36%), Python (16%), Django (9%), PHP (8%), and Java (6%) makes us think that plenty of employers are looking for universal players, rather than exclusive Front-End/Back-End developers. That doesn’t mean that everyone should rapidly become a Full-Stack developer to excel in their remote career, but an ability to collaborate with Back-End engineers efficiently and assist them on an ad-hoc basis will definitely be valued by any employer. The popularity of the terms AWS (28%), CI/CD (16%), Google Cloud Platform (9%), Jenkins (7%), and Kubernetes (7%) prove that the same is true for the knowledge of DevOps tools.

Among mobile Front-End technologies, React Native (18%) is the absolute leader, followed by Ionic (6%) and Flutter (5%). Therefore, the increased demand for Cross-Platform Mobile Front-End developers is obvious — just compare these numbers with the ones for Swift (2%) and Kotlin (0,7%).

It’s also notable that the employers are looking for remote Front-End devs who have hands-on experience in working with REST APIs (28%), know how to take care of Scalability (24%) and Security (13%) of the delivered software solutions, and make them Robust (11%). (By the way, all these power words would definitely spice up your Front-End developer resume!)

What About Back-End Devs?

In the following chart, you can see the terms we met the most frequently in the job postings for remote Back-End developers:

Among those Back-End technologies which were not mentioned in our chart, the most popular ones were Scala (12%), Django (12%), Flask (10%), and Express.js (9%). In contrast with the previous section, Front-End technologies were infrequently mentioned in Back-End remote vacancies. However, some employers would still prefer candidates with knowledge of Angular (9%), Vue.js (7%) or React Native (7%).

The Cloud Computing (41%) boom hasn’t seemed to slow down, with AWS (54%) as the clear leader by a large margin, followed by Azure (15%) and Google Cloud Platform (10%). The demand for Distributed Systems (34%) and Apache Kafka (15%) in particular is also growing. Among the skills which employers would also value in remote Back-End developers are the readiness to contribute to Open Source (19%) software and at least a general knowledge of DevOps (19%) tools.

Not surprisingly, plenty of employers are searching for remote Machine Learning (21%) engineers, as well as Artificial Intelligence (12%) and Big Data (10%) enthusiasts. There is also a moderate demand for distant Computer Vision (9%) and Embedded (7%) specialists. As for the domain areas, the most popular ones were SaaS (15%), Cryptocurrency (13%), Finance (12%), and Blockchain (10%).

In general, companies expect remote Back-End engineers to take care of the software Scalability (37%) and Security (24%); to follow the Agile (25%) principles in their work; and, of course, to be ready to collaborate with teammates via Slack (14%), JIRA (10%), and similar systems. Make sure to mention these skills in your resume, including the ability for self-organization and communication within a distributed team.

A Perfect Tech Matrix for a Remote Full-Stack Developer

Finally, here are the technologies employers are eager to see on the resumes of remote Full-Stack Developers:

Among the popular technologies for Full-Stack developers there also were Ruby on Rails (17%), C# (15%), Vue.js (14%), and Java EE (11%). Mobile development frameworks, such as React Native (10%) and Ionic (6%), were also present in a number of job postings, as well as the keywords like Open Source (14%) and Machine Learning (12%).

Generally speaking, common tendencies can also be observed in the Full-Stack vacancies: there is a demand in those who have a knack for Testing (49%), Cloud Computing (39%), REST APIs (29%), and DevOps (17%). It is notable that the term Microservices (28%) was met in Full-Stack vacancies more frequently than in Back-End ones, (but in general, we see that the demand for experience with these architectures is not as high as it used to be.)

Based on our data, remote Full-Stack developers are mostly required for the development of Web Applications (34%) and Web Services (11%). The term Cross-Platform Mobile Development was mentioned less frequently — in 7% of vacancies. By the way, we should highlight some pairs of web technologies which were frequently seen in the Full-Stack job postings. From our observations, React.js (64%) is often paired with either Node.js (50%) or Django (11%), whereas Angular (45%) is often combined with Node.js, too, as well as with Java (12%) and ASP.NET (11%). As for MVC (33%) frameworks, such as Laravel (5%), they are often chosen as a Back-End technology for Vue.js projects.

Just like all (remote) devs, Full-Stack engineers are expected to be familiar with CI/CD (24%) tools, such as Jenkins (14%), OOP (15%), and Design Patterns (13%). As for the domain areas, the term eCommerce was found in 11% of the remote Full-Stack vacancies, so there might be more opportunities for distant Full-Stack devs in this field.

Remote Tech Vacancies: Common Observations

While analyzing remote vacancies, we came to some conclusions common across categories. First of all, it was harder for us to find 300 remote Back-End job postings than the same number of Front-End or Full-Stack ones. Therefore, even if you have a passion for Back-End, if you have a decent knowledge of any Front-End technology, consider writing ‘Full-Stack’ in the title of your resume — that could attract some extra attention.

Also, the words ‘experience,‘ ‘team,‘ ‘understanding,‘ and ‘communication‘ were included in almost every vacancy we analyzed. It’s no wonder — when working as part of a distributed team, constant and effective communication is crucial for the project to go smoothly. The word ‘English‘ was mentioned in ~45% of vacancies, so a good command of it might become your competitive advantage. Speaking of experience, about 52% of remote job descriptions for all categories contained the word ‘Senior‘, whereas the words ‘Mid-Level‘ and ‘Junior‘ were mentioned in just 17% of all vacancies.

It’s notable that over 40% of vacancies included words such as ‘love’ and/or ‘passionate.’ Indeed, it’s important to wholeheartedly love what you do — it’s a key to success!

Where to Search for Remote Programmer Jobs

When looking for remote jobs in software development, consider using the following sources:

Ask HN: Who is hiring right now? | Who is hiring? (March 2020)

Remote jobs on Stack Overflow

Remote jobs on AngelList

Remote jobs on Glassdoor

We Work Remotely

RemoteOK

Remotive

Remote.co

Dev.to

Tarta.ai Assistant

Quick Tip: Before applying for the job of your dream, you might also want to check how strong your Developer resume is. For this, consider using CV Compiler — an ML-powered service that checks and helps improve resumes for Software Engineers, Mobile Developers, Data Scientists, DevOps, QA Specialists, Designers, and Product Managers. Here’s a special promo code for 20% off: Remote2020.

Good luck in your quest for a remote software developer job in 2020!
