      <title>Learning Vim: A Beginner's Perspective</title>

  First, some background...
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I've always been a pretty fast typist, but I didn't realize until recently that even though I type 100 WPM, I'm still quite slow when it comes to actually editing code. Moving things around, finding and replacing multiple instances of a variable, jumping to different lines of code... doing these things quickly requires a completely different skillset than typing -- a sort of typing superset.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After hearing it mentioned several times on &lt;a href="https://syntax.fm"&gt;Syntax.fm&lt;/a&gt;, I started learning the keyboard shortcuts for Visual Studio Code. The editor-specific shortcuts were easy to pick up (toggling the file explorer, opening the extensions menu, etc), but it was a different story when I tried to use keyboard shortcuts to edit the actual code. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This was mainly due to the fact that the Home and End keys are in awkward positions on a standard keyboard, and I needed to use these keys a lot so that I could move to the beginning or end of a line quickly. To get around this issue, I installed &lt;a href="https://www.autohotkey.com/"&gt;AutoHotKey&lt;/a&gt;, and used my CapsLock key as a modifier in order to mimic the Home and End keys. It helped for sure, but things still felt a bit clunky.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Around this same time, I started becoming interested in mechanical keyboards, for no reason other than I thought they looked cool. As I started looking into the smaller mechanical keyboards (60% and below), I started noticing that &lt;strong&gt;a lot of people who liked these keyboards were also Vim users.&lt;/strong&gt; I had always assumed Vim wasn't for me, especially after having the same experience a lot of devs go through when opening it for the first time -- not being able to exit the editor.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But, as I kept researching keyboards, I kept seeing more overlap with Vim. I wasn't really sure why, until &lt;a href="https://youtu.be/AKGXZ1ReU54"&gt;this video&lt;/a&gt; shed some light. The reason that there is so much overlap between specialized keyboards and Vim is because they are both centered around the idea of &lt;strong&gt;getting as much a possible done without moving your hands from the keyboard&lt;/strong&gt;, or even from the home row.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;At this point, I couldn't contain my curiosity any longer; I had to know what the hype around Vim was, and why so many developers seem to swear by it. Until I watched that video, Vim had always given off sort of an elitist vibe to me:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;I don't need to use a mouse because I'm better than the average user.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The mouse is for beginners.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Only the truly savvy can wield the power of the keyboard.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While this attitude is unfortunately present in the developer community, I don't think we should let that stop us from benefiting from the great tool that Vim is. At the end of the day, it's about efficiency. We type and edit so much text as developers, if we can shave off a fraction of a second here and there, it adds up to a large amount of time saved in the long run. As a bonus, less hand and wrist movement also reduces the chance of injury.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With that out of the way, let's take a look at what it's like to actually use Vim.&lt;/p&gt;

  Enter Vim
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What immediately sets Vim apart from a standard text editor is the fact that it has multiple modes of operation. By default, you are in a mode that does not allow you to input text, and instead this mode is intended for you to navigate through existing text in the document. To actually type text into the document, you need to invoke a keyboard shortcut to enter the 'insert mode'. When in insert mode, (mostly) everything works the way you would expect in a normal text editor. To work efficiently in Vim, you'll need to be constantly toggling back and forth between insert mode and the normal navigation mode. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I think this is what initially turns a lot of people away from Vim. If you go into it without any frame of reference or instruction, it feels highly unintuitive. This is because &lt;strong&gt;Vim is more focused on editing existing text, as opposed to typing new text&lt;/strong&gt; (like a standard text editor).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Luckily, there is a tutorial built into every Unix-based terminal (Windows users can access it via WSL). To access the tutorial, execute the &lt;code&gt;vimtutor&lt;/code&gt; command from any directory in your terminal. &lt;code&gt;vimtutor&lt;/code&gt; consists of seven moderately-detailed lessons on how to use Vim, and although it only scratches the surface of what is possible in Vim, it covers more than enough to get you started and feeling comfortable with Vim. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For instance, while going through &lt;code&gt;vimtutor&lt;/code&gt;, I discovered that all of the keyboard shortcuts I was previously using with AutoHotKey were already built into Vim, and were also much more intuitive.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It's also worth noting that even though the tutorial goes through a lot of material, you really only need the first lesson to get over the hump. The first lesson goes over things like navigating using the H, J, K, and L keys (which replace your arrow keys), switching between 'normal' and 'insert' mode, as well as saving and quitting a file.&lt;/p&gt;

  Now what?
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you're anything like me, you might try out &lt;code&gt;vimtutor&lt;/code&gt;, see why Vim is beneficial, but then think:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Is it really worth switching over from Visual Studio Code? That means I lose my autocomplete, my extensions, my config...&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Luckily, there are some solutions to this problem.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One solution is to install the Vim extension for Visual Studio Code. This way, you still get autocompletion, jump to definition, linting, git integration, and any other customizations you've made to your VS Code setup. The only downside I have noticed with this approach is that some VS Code shortcuts seem to conflict with Vim shortcuts. For example, when using the Vim extension, I was no longer able to use Ctrl + B to toggle the file explorer sidebar because Ctrl + B is already a shortcut in Vim, which takes precedence. This can be solved by changing the key bindings, but I like to leave those alone until I explore other options.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Speaking of other options, another route you can go is setting up your Vim editor to mimic an IDE through the use of a &lt;code&gt;vimrc&lt;/code&gt; file and Vim plugins. Although this approach requires some setup, you may find that it is worth it, since it enables you navigate your project's file structure using Vim shortcuts, as opposed to the VS Code plugin, which is only scoped to the main editor area. Although I haven't configured Vim just yet, this is information I gathered from watching videos from &lt;a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8ENHE5xdFSwx71u3fDH5Xw"&gt;The Primeagen&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFr28K65-5E"&gt;Leeren&lt;/a&gt; on YouTube.&lt;/p&gt;

  Vim outside the editor?
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After getting used to the idea of using primarily the keyboard for navigating through text, it seemed strange to go back to using a mouse for browsing the web. I had tried using the Chrome keyboard shortcuts for browsing the web, but it wasn't a very pleasant experience.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That's when I found &lt;a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vimium/dbepggeogbaibhgnhhndojpepiihcmeb?hl=en"&gt;Vimium&lt;/a&gt;, a Chrome extension that lets you use Vim shortcuts to navigate the web. Besides the fact that it doesn't work on some pages (like Gmail and the Chrome Extension store, ironically), Vimium is awesome. I think it makes surfing the web feel like a video game, with the keyboard as your controller. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Vimium also has a feature that I think any user can find helpful, even if you aren't into Vim and heavy keyboard usage. With Vimium installed, pressing &lt;code&gt;o&lt;/code&gt; brings up a search bar that allows you to search any text within any of your open tabs, as well as tabs from your browser history. This makes it great for those moments when you can't find the page you're looking for by Googling, but you remember some key words from the page.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As far as dealing with pages that don't support Vimium, you can just fall back to the default Chrome shortcuts. Here are the main Chrome shortcuts that I've found helpful:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;And then of course you can use just plain old Tab to cycle through to links, then press Enter to click the link. This is honestly the most painful part of navigating with the Chrome defaults, and if it weren't for how cumbersome this was, I wouldn't see a need for Vimium.&lt;/p&gt;

  Consistency
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So, we've covered using Vim to navigate text in a text editor, as well as using Vim-esque shortcuts to navigate the browser, but there's still one area we haven't covered -- using Vim shortcuts in text areas.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I'm talking about things like writing an email, filling out a form on a website, writing a tweet. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While some might argue that using Vim in these scenarios is overkill, I don't think it is. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Once I got used to the Vim shortcuts, the default (and even custom AutoHotKey) shortcuts just fall short. I don't want to have to revert to those every time I need to write text outside of Vim. Of course, this is personal preference, but again, it's about efficiency.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So, what can we do to bridge the gap?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There are some third-party options available, depending on your operating system.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For Unix-based systems, you can use a tool like &lt;a href="https://github.com/cknadler/vim-anywhere"&gt;vim-anywhere&lt;/a&gt;, which will open a Vim prompt when you interact with a text area, so that you can still use your Vim shortcuts.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There might be a way to get &lt;code&gt;vim-anywhere&lt;/code&gt; to work with Windows and WSL, but it seemed like too much of a hassle to me, so instead I used a &lt;a href="https://github.com/lubokkanev/vim-everywhere"&gt;AutoHotKey script I found&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The point of this post was to show the benefits of using Vim, and prove that it isn't nearly as scary as you might think. I encourage anyone to give it an honest try while using the tutorial, before writing it off like I did for so long.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;About a month ago, I decided I wanted to build a game. I wanted to make a game that required the player to code, but also played like an old-school RPG.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Seeing as this is a huge task, I decided to work on the game in pieces. I started working on a &lt;a href="https://vibrant-lichterman-9291a6.netlify.app/" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;battle system&lt;/a&gt;, but realized that I needed to start from the beginning before going any further down that rabbit hole.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So, here we are, building an inventory. Before getting into the actual code, let's go over what this app will actually do.&lt;/p&gt;

  What We're Building
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This will be a split-window coding app, much like &lt;a href="https://flexboxfroggy.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;Flexbox Froggy&lt;/a&gt;, except instead of moving frogs, we'll be moving game items into an inventory with persistent state, and the user will be entering JavaScript instead of CSS.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We'll be using &lt;a href="https://ace.c9.io/" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;Ace Editor&lt;/a&gt; via the &lt;a href="https://github.com/securingsincity/react-ace" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;react-ace package&lt;/a&gt; for our code editor component.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We'll also be implementing a &lt;a href="https://mastery.games/post/grid-inspector/" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;custom grid inspector&lt;/a&gt;, which will act as a separator between inventory slots.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We need to start thinking about how we are going to handle the items going into our inventory. At the very least, we need a way to keep track of the state of the items, as well as a way to identify them.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Eventually, we'll want a way to handle items of varying sizes (a potion takes up less space than a dagger, which takes up less space than a sword, etc). For now, though, we'll just focus on items that take up one inventory slot.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We could display all five items to the user at once, but eventually, we are going to have enough items to fill the entire inventory, so we'll take a different approach.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Instead, we will create levels. Each level will have one item for the player to move into the inventory. Once the item is moved into the inventory, the player will be able to advance to the next level.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Since each level will contain an item, we can rename our &lt;code&gt;item.js&lt;/code&gt; file to be &lt;code&gt;levels.js&lt;/code&gt;, and then structure it like so:&lt;br&gt;

  Enabling the Editor

&lt;p&gt;So far, we haven't done much with our &lt;code&gt;&amp;lt;AceEditor&amp;gt;&lt;/code&gt; component. We supplied a basic &lt;code&gt;onChange&lt;/code&gt; function, but as we've seen, it doesn't do much. We'll want to change that. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is the part where it gets a bit tricky -- not in terms of how to code it, but rather, in terms of following best practices. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Why? &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The primary concern here is that we are going to allow the player to enter JavaScript into our application, which our application will then execute. In other words, the user can type any JavaScript they want into our application.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;However, we aren't exposing any sensitive information. We don't have a back end. There are no passwords, no credit card information, etc. So, in theory, a malicious user isn't able to do much harm, other than maybe lock up their own browser by executing an infinite loop.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Therefore, we are going to use the &lt;a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Function" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;&lt;code&gt;new Function()&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/a&gt; approach.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The first &lt;code&gt;try/catch&lt;/code&gt; block attempts to create a function from the user input. The inner &lt;code&gt;try/catch&lt;/code&gt; block attempts to run that function. These are necessary because our &lt;code&gt;onChange&lt;/code&gt; function runs after each keystroke, so this prevents the app from crashing when a player is in the middle of typing.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If we run the &lt;code&gt;moveItem()&lt;/code&gt; function again, and then head to our React Dev Tools, we can see that the state of &lt;code&gt;currentPosition&lt;/code&gt; was updated.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Once the item has been moved, we want to mark the level as complete, but we don't want to automatically advance the player to the next level, as they may want to change the position of the current item before moving on to the next level.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is the reason we included a &lt;code&gt;done&lt;/code&gt; property on each of our levels in &lt;code&gt;levels.js&lt;/code&gt;; we can create a button to move to the next level, and render that button once the item for the current level has been moved to the inventory (which will mark 'done' as true):&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But there's a problem: We calculated the &lt;code&gt;activeLevel&lt;/code&gt; variable (which we need to mark as 'done') in our &lt;code&gt;&amp;lt;Level&amp;gt;&lt;/code&gt; component. Now that we need to access the active level in our &lt;code&gt;App&lt;/code&gt; component, it makes more sense to calculate the active level in &lt;code&gt;App&lt;/code&gt;, then pass its value down to &lt;code&gt;&amp;lt;Level&amp;gt;&lt;/code&gt; as a prop:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This &lt;em&gt;almost&lt;/em&gt; works the way we want it to. The 'Next' button shows up, but not when the level state is changed. It only renders once we type another character into the editor.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We'll fix that in the next post. Our state is getting a bit messy anyways, so we're due for a refactor.&lt;/p&gt;

  Tweaking the Editor
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The &lt;code&gt;log&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;validInput&lt;/code&gt;, and &lt;code&gt;moveItem&lt;/code&gt; functions we've provided to our player aren't very long, but they still take up a good bit of real estate. It's not exactly a clean interface for the player to be greeted with.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We can clean it up a bit by taking advantage of &lt;code&gt;react-ace&lt;/code&gt;'s code folding feature, and adding an &lt;code&gt;onLoad&lt;/code&gt; function to our &lt;code&gt;editor.js&lt;/code&gt; file:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;CSS has always been an issue for me. Truthfully, it's what deterred me from wanting to get into web development for a long time. I wasn't good at CSS. I would feel like I was getting better at it, but would eventually run into a layout issue I couldn't solve. Every time that happened, I felt like I needed to relearn CSS. It wasn't for lack of trying, either; I've been trying to learn CSS (on and off) since before the days of Flexbox and Grid. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Instead of spending the entire article lamenting my struggles with CSS, I'm going to share the resources and techniques that allowed me to overcome my biggest stumbling blocks. It is my hope that this post will prevent others from making some of the same mistakes I made when learning CSS. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h1&gt;
  
  
  The Basics
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You've heard it before: You can't get far without the basics. CSS is no exception. With CSS, though, it's not always easy to know what exactly encompasses 'the basics'. Understanding elements and selectors simply isn't enough. These were the portions that really made a difference for me: &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Specificity&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Block/Inline block&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Relative units&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Not understanding what these things were threw me off in a major way when I was trying to build an entire layout. I could get away with not knowing them if I was only building a very small part of a UI, but things started to get hairy as I added more markup and styling. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That being said, I still don't understand all of these things in full. I learned enough about them to have a decent idea of how each of them will influence my layout, and it has made basic troubleshooting much easier. &lt;/p&gt;

  Structure
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;My CSS files used to be a mess of classes. It's easy to do if you're not sure how to structure your styles in such a way that the 'cascade' works in your favor. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What helped me structure my styles better was actually a course. In &lt;a href="https://www.leveluptutorials.com/tutorials/modern-css-design-systems"&gt;'Modern CSS Design Systems' by Level Up Tutorials&lt;/a&gt;, I learned how to set up a base-level template for styling. The template uses "classless" CSS, meaning that the styling is produced &lt;em&gt;implicitly&lt;/em&gt; by the cascade, rather than &lt;em&gt;explicitly&lt;/em&gt; via classes. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now that I've completed that course, I can now use that template, and tweak it for a variety of layouts, without cluttering up the stylesheet with classes. More importantly, I now have a better idea of how to properly take advantage of the 'cascade' in Cascading Style Sheets. This was &lt;strong&gt;huge.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

  Dev tools, dev tools, dev tools!
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I shied away from my browser dev tools for a long time. The dev tools have so many tabs -- it might as well be a separate application! It was intimidating. It was only after seeing other developers use them over and over that I realized how important they were. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For me, it was hard to know where to start. Luckily, I realized you don't need to be familiar with all of the features to get a lot out of your dev tools. The tabs I find myself using most often are: &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Elements&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Style&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Console (when dealing with styling via Javascript)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The tool that really changed the game for me, though, was the element selector. It took a little bit of getting used to, but I found that once I knew what to look for, the selector made debugging layouts a dream. I got into the habit of slowly moving the selector tool all over the page whenever my layout was broken. The overlay that the selector tool provides almost always pointed out where my "problem element" was.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If the overlay didn't give me my answer, the 'Styles' tab was next in line. Seeing the actual CSS that is being applied to a given element is extremely helpful. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If I was &lt;em&gt;still&lt;/em&gt; scratching my head after inspecting both the overlay and the Styles tab, the element was usually inside a Flexbox container and its accompanying &lt;code&gt;justify-content&lt;/code&gt; property was affecting the available space for the content.&lt;/p&gt;

  Development Workflow
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After I got a bit more comfortable with CSS, I started looking into other tools to improve my workflow. I considered using a framework like &lt;a href="https://tailwindcss.com/"&gt;Tailwind&lt;/a&gt;, but I decided to go a different route, because I wanted to strengthen my fundamentals instead of having a framework do the heavy lifting.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The tools I used:&lt;/p&gt;

  Sass
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://sass-lang.com/"&gt;Sass&lt;/a&gt; is another tool that I should have started using a long time ago. I knew that it was a "preprocessor", but I had no idea what that meant. I assumed it was only useful for more advanced CSS, and that trying to learn it would only confuse me more. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;How very wrong I was. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Think of Sass as a tool that adds some 'programmatic' flare to your CSS. It gives you the ability to write functions, nest styles, and my personal favorite -- the ability to break your stylesheet into multiple stylesheets. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This was a key selling point for me, since one of the things I always disliked about CSS was having to scroll up and down a stylesheet, trying to find the section I needed to modify.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You can do a lot with Sass, and I could probably write entire blog post about it. The point I want to drive home is that you should not categorize Sass as an 'advanced' CSS tool. In my opinion, it can be extremely helpful to beginners, simply for the organizational aspect.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you're looking to get started with Sass, Traversy Media has an excellent &lt;a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu5mdN2JIwM&amp;amp;t"&gt;crash course&lt;/a&gt; on YouTube.&lt;/p&gt;

  PostCSS / Autoprefixer
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you've worked with CSS, chances are you've run into vendor prefixes. You know, those syntactically-weird lines of CSS that look like:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;code&gt;-webkit-animation: myAnimation 0.5s&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here, &lt;code&gt;-webkit-&lt;/code&gt; is a vendor prefix, and is necessary for your CSS to work on certain browsers. Therefore, any time you need to add some CSS that isn't directly supported on all browsers (like an animation), you'll need to add multiple prefixes to ensure consistency on all browsers. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As you can imagine, remembering to add a prefix can be quite cumbersome. That's where &lt;a href="https://postcss.org/"&gt;PostCSS&lt;/a&gt; comes into play. Much like Sass, you can add PostCSS as a development dependency and use the autoprefixer plugin to have the vendor prefixes generated for you. It's not cheating; it's efficient!&lt;/p&gt;

  Building Projects
&lt;/h1&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now, all of this is great in theory, but none of it is going to stick if you don't put these concepts to work. There are tons of practice CSS projects you can take on, but personally, I believe the best learning experience is a project with some higher stakes. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to rebuild the &lt;a href="https://accessphysicaltherapyllc.com/"&gt;website&lt;/a&gt; for my dad's physical therapy practice. Knowing that this website would actually end up in production, being viewed by actual customers, added just enough pressure to perform. The stakes were high enough to push me forward, but not so high that the experience was stressful. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I realize that not everyone will have that opportunity, but there are still options aplenty. You can:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Ask friends and family if they know anyone in need of a website&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Utilize a feedback-oriented training service like &lt;a href="https://www.frontendmentor.io/"&gt;Frontend Mentor&lt;/a&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Build out your personal portfolio website&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;See if you can build a real, but low-risk project. If you're anything like me, and have trouble finishing projects, this will give you the push you need to take it to the finish line, while also giving you real experience.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While I've been trying to improve my CSS for years, what I've outlined in this post has taken place only over the course of the past couple of months. If I hadn't adopted these techniques and resources, I would still be swimming in a sea of confusion (and may have even given up on CSS entirely).
