The Story Behind It

After watching The Mitchells vs. the Machines, I realized most AIs today don’t feel alive — they answer, but they don’t connect. That idea stuck with me, so I started building BUD: an AI that talks, reacts, and feels more like a companion than a tool.

Technical Highlights

BUD stands out through a tightly integrated, future-ready AI architecture designed for natural interaction, scalability, and real-world deployment:

BUD is powered by a context-aware AI engine capable of maintaining long-term conversational state, enabling natural follow-ups like “do it again” or “make it shorter” without repeating instructions.

🎙️ Immersive Voice-First Experience

Beyond text, BUD supports real-time voice interaction through a full-screen immersive call interface. Users can speak naturally, receive human-like responses, and interact hands-free — blurring the line between assistant and companion.

🧠 Multi-Modal Interaction Layer

BUD is built to seamlessly handle text, voice, and UI-driven interactions, allowing users to switch input modes without breaking context or flow.

⚙️ Modular AI Pipeline

The system is designed with modular AI components (speech recognition, reasoning, response generation, and TTS), making it easy to swap models, optimize performance, or add new capabilities without rewriting the core system.

🌍 Deployment-Ready Platform

BUD is not a local demo — it is engineered for cloud deployment, real-time usage, and future integrations, laying the foundation for expansion into mobile apps, desktop companions, and XR environments.

Use of Mux (Additional Prize Category Participants Only)

We used Mux to host and stream BUD’s demo video, ensuring smooth, high-quality playback that showcased BUD’s immersive voice and real-time AI interaction. Mux’s simple integration allowed us to focus on core development while making our demo accessible worldwide.
