Just when I thought I'd figured out what to discuss about the fascinating developments in translation dubbing, a breakthrough in AI image processing swooped wholly and upturned my plans. As I geared up to dissect this new development, a new release of the AI model Bard took me by surprise. Against such a backdrop of incessantly materializing AI innovations, I decided to cram all this and more in one comprehensive post.

The New Bard Revealed

Less than 24 hours before writing this, I became aware of the Bard extensions - a recent development reminiscent of ChatGPT plugins. However, the use case for these extensions is quite specific. They work exclusively with popular Google applications like YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and more.

To truly appreciate these extensions, let's delve into a practical scenario where they could shine. A while ago, I had taken a photo of some Roman remains during an exploration outing. Bard, with its image analysis capabilities, could ascertain that the central figure in the image was Mithras, a well-known deity in Roman mythology. Is the Cherry on top? It managed to recommend a YouTube video about Mithras, without any prompt from me to do so.

Bard's ability to provide both image analysis and relevant online content in a single combined process - without requiring separate searches - makes it extraordinarily useful.

Moreover, consider another case where I had shot a photo during my travels. The ask was simple,” What’s the flight duration and typical cost from London to the location shown?”. Bard not only identified the location (Fisherman's Bastion), but it also found specific flights for me, tracked the cost, and provided additional information about the destination. Quite a handy feature for the avid traveler, I'd say.

Bard's Limitations

Although I've covered the impressive features of Bard, it's worth touching on an issue: its tendency to hallucinate. When asked to provide feedback from comments on my YouTube channel, Bard fabricated responses that didn't exist in my comment section. While Bard can sometimes find genuine comments, one must question its utility since its responses cannot be relied upon.

Bard's inconsistencies extended to other tasks as well. Although it was able to fetch my Replit bill from my Gmail, it initially failed to compare the cost of my monthly Replit bill with my Eleven Labs bill. Only after consistent prompting did it retrieve the desired bills and perform the comparison.

Moreover, Bard had trouble with image recognition and approximations. When asked to identify the character in an image of Darth Vader, Bard accurately identified him. However, when asked to estimate the gross revenue of the Star Wars franchise, the numbers were inaccurate. Even after adjusting for inflation, the results were less than stellar. Unfortunately, Bard's self-assessment of the accuracy of its response, conducted by clicking the "Double check response" button on Google, contributed little to its credibility. It was often overconfident about the accuracy of the response it provided, even when the response was incorrect.

All said and done, let's not dismiss Bard entirely. The new extensions are a significant step forward.

Coming to Hagan Avatar 20, a technology I had demoed in my last video, it truly took people by surprise. Notably, the technology's command over languages is astounding and comes with the potential to transform fields like movie dubbing.

Consider this translation of Oppenheimer's famous quote into Spanish:

As a responsible AI enthusiast, I believe we need to tread carefully with deep fake technology use, as it could potentially manipulate political outcomes or distort historical facts. But for those keen to make their predictions of AI, Meticulous is an excellent platform to refer to.

Nevertheless, in terms of AI progress, the strides being made in GPT models, like GPT-3 Five, and their ability to play chess is a testament to the incredible leaps AI is taking toward reasoning capabilities.

Stepping away from reasoning, I've been fascinated by the latest developments in AI art creation. I've generated some fantastic images and videos using Fusion Art, Runway Gen Two, and even Adobe Express. Fusion Art's strong suit is turning text into striking visuals by converting an image of the text into art based on a prompt. Constructed by cryptocurrency heavyweight, Coinbase, Base enhances Ethereum's performance by managing transactions on a secondary blockchain which eventually settles back on the main Ethereum chain.

Take note, however, that the transition between the Ethereum's chain and the Base ecosystem requires the payment of gas fees in ETH, hence maintaining sufficient ETH in your wallet is critical.

Life often feels like a race against the clock. Whether you're striving for success in academia or your career, getting the most out of your time is crucial. Remember the movie Interstellar where an hour on one planet equals seven years on Earth? Wouldn't it be amazing if we could manipulate time in our favor as well?

In this post, I delve into how we might harness the power of our brain to make every minute count. Can we, in essence, slow down time and make every hour of work equivalent to three? Let's find out.

The Illusion of Linear Time

Our perception of time is not a constant factor. Its passing feels different for different people and in different situations — an hour could feel like a minute or a decade, depending on the circumstances. This time distortion has been largely attributed to an invisible force – mental energy or brain power. This brings us to our crucial question: Can we control our mental energy to slow down time?

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Contrary to the common adage, 'Work Harder', it might pay off to work smarter instead. Overworking may not necessarily translate into better results, whereas working strategically and effectively can save energy and achieve a higher yield. A principle known as "the law of reversed effort" aptly explains this paradox.

As per the law of reversed effort, striving too hard to achieve something may result in the opposite effect — failure. For instance, we've all experienced those nights when the harder we try to sleep, the wider awake we seem to stay. This seemingly counter-productive phenomenon implies that a strategic, rather than forceful, approach to tasks or learning can lead to more fruitful results.

Brain Power and Time Distortion

Time distortion is affected by our mental energy or brain power, hence focusing it effectively is the key. Brain power differentiates from productivity, as it persists as a constant entity within each day, unlike the latter which can fluctuate. At the beginning of the day, we usually feel more energized and focused, with the effect waning as the day progresses. Expanding our brainpower strategically by focusing on our most important tasks early in the day is profoundly beneficial.

This technique is particularly effective because it utilizes the quiet hours of the day when our minds are not swamped with daily stressors. The prefrontal cortex — the rational part of our brain — is quieter during the early hours, reducing the chance of over-analyzation and stress. This facilitates the spontaneous, fluent state of focus, famously referred to as the 'Flow State'.

Harnessing the Flow State

The Chinese philosophy of Taoism dubbed this tranquil state of mind as 'Wu Wei', an 'effortless action'. In the Western world, it's known as the 'Flow State'. In this serene mental state, we are so engrossed in our task that time 'slows down' and minutes pass by like seconds.

Some people enter the Flow State when painting, dancing, or doing sports-- for me, it occurs during my programming projects, where it feels as though the program is writing itself!

Below are some techniques to induce the Flow State:

Eliminate distractions: Distractions can be detrimental to attaining the flow state; one glance at a notification can take about 15-20 minutes to refocus! 'Deliberate Distraction' is an effective method to curb this hindrance— setting designated 'distraction periods' can greatly help.
Set artificial deadlines: Parkinson's Law tells us that a task expands to fill the time we allot it. Setting carefully designed time frames for your tasks can prompt the flow state.
Choose the right tasks: Irrelevant tasks can hamper concentration; thus, choosing tasks that desire your complete attention is crucial.

The Power of Active Recall

Mastering how to enter the flow state enables us to learn faster, but how do we remember what we've learned? The answer lies in active recall.

Active recall comprises consciously trying to remember what we've absorbed. We can achieve this by writing down the questions we've answered during our learning process and subsequently revisiting them, or by teaching our learnings to someone else—a method known as the Feynman Technique.

This post provides a glimpse into maximizing productivity and learning coding through efficient techniques. Remember, it's always about working smart, not hard.

This portfolio could include all your assignments, which are essentially projects that can be showcased on your page or linked to your resume.

Setting The Right Foot Forward: Start With Python

Here's how I initiated my journey with CS50. I suggest starting with Python by diving into CS50's course 'Introduction to Programming with Python'. This course is especially recommended for beginners due to its slow pace and beginner-friendly content.

By the time you finish this course, you should be proficient enough to proceed to the more intense courses. Remember, the primary key here is consistent learning, and not rushing through the course.

After wrapping up the Python course, plunge into the main CS50 course by enrolling in 'CS50X'. This comprehensive course spans 10 weeks, and on successful completion, you can claim your free certificate from Harvard University.

After completing these courses, you should come out as a thorough, competent, and confident coder. However, learning is a journey that should never reach a destination. Like the Japanese concept of "Kaizen" suggests, one should relentlessly pursue improvement.

Whether it's a job, a personal project, or a new course, try to dedicate at least 2 hours per day to code – even if it's merely to hone your skills.

Failing The Google Coding Interview: A Learning Story

Motivated by the belief that we learn more from failures than successes, today I'm sharing my personal story about failing the Google Coding interview in late 2021. I believe this ordeal taught me valuable lessons which I later applied to sail through the same interview two years later.

How I got the Google Interview

As a senior year college student with an unremarkable resume boasting merely one internship and a good GPA, I applied to Google online. Google's cozy hiring policies meant that I was called in for an online assessment, the first step in Google's interviewing process. Google Online Assessment helps in weeding out candidates who lack a basic understanding of coding, and in my opinion, works even if its questions and solutions are available online.

While I didn't feel the need to prepare a lot for this preliminary round, its simplicity shouldn't mislead you into underestimating the rest of the process.

Preparing for the Onsite Interview

Post the online assessment, I scheduled my onsite interview a month or two later, to allow for enough preparation. The intensity of the actual tasks took precedence over academics in my final college year, pushing me to focus more on honing my technical skills.

The major part of my preparation involved working on the Blind 75 list of questions, a newly released set back then and now a go-to list for coding enthusiasts. To ensure I grasped the solutions well, I attempted most of these problems twice.

I ended up practicing approximately 50 random LeetCode questions, giving special focus to medium-level problems"

Alongside this list, I built the Blind 75 list and extended it to 150 problems, addressing comprehensive and beginner-friendly issues.

The Google Onsite Interview Experience

The preparatory phase climaxed into an engaging and learning experience in Seattle. The day was composed of task-related discussions interspersed with an office tour, lunch, and access to refreshments.

The activity centered on a meeting room with a large whiteboard where I had five consecutive interview rounds– four codings and one behavioral.

Round 1: The Importance of Understanding The Problem

Starting on a rough note, I messed up the first round, not due to inadequate coding skills but the dismissal of an important tenet of problem-solving, understanding the problem well. My enthusiasm got the better of me and I rushed into the process, failing to cross-check my interpretation of the problem. While this mistake only required a minor modification in the codes, it reflected negatively on my approach.

Round 2: Communication Is Key

Round two taught me the importance of communication. Instead of assuming that the interviewer wanted a complicated solution and taking unnecessary trouble, I should have checked it with the interviewer. An open discussion could have not only saved time but also prevented any miscommunication.

Round 3: Coming Up With The Expected Solution

The third assessment was smooth sailing except for the fact that my solution differed from the one expected by the interviewer. Although my approach was just as efficient, I speculated if this discrepancy cost me some points.

Round 4: Implementing The Optimum Solution

Coming up just short of the target, I could identify but not implement the optimum solution for the fourth problem. The interviewer had to nudge me toward the solution, which I then coded promptly.

Round 5: The Googliness Round

Lastly, the half-hour-long behavioral round was a relaxing session that tested basic interpersonal skills and compatibility with the work environment. Owing to a misunderstanding, the interviewer almost began with a coding problem but was quick to adapt once notified about the intended behavioral discussion.

The interviewing process wrapped up with a farewell and a trip back home filled with apprehensions about my performance.

The Learning

Three weeks later, the fear did manifest into a rejection email, leading to a phase of regret and self-blame. Reflecting on the blunders of misinterpreting problems and complicating solutions, I wondered if potential corrections could have led to selection.

On the brighter side, this experience ended by teaching me some invaluable lessons in problem-solving, communication, and patience.
