Registrations are now open and preparations for ChefConf ’22 are in full swing for the upcoming hybrid event. From September 11 to 14, at the Westin Seaport Hotel in Boston, we will host a series of keynotes, panel discussions, and breakout sessions dedicated to our sector of DevSecOps. We have an invitation-only executive track for Progress 360, a discovery zone to learn and meet the teams from all our Progress Business Units, and of course, our invited industry experts. Do you have a story of how Chef Products helped you get to the market faster, saved you time and expenses, and provided first-class security automation — we would love to hear your Chef story.

We want to add to our speaker list, and it could be you. We are also looking for topics that support the following themes:

Compliance & Security — Addressing CISO and others focused on security
IT Operations — Focusing on DevOps planning and execution
IT Leadership — Appealing to those responsible for managing DevOps
Better Together / Product Together — combining multiple Chef and/or Progress products
Cloud — covering Chef usage across public, private, hybrid, and multi-cloud
Ease of Use/Productivity — sharing practices to improve team productivity
Platform Strategy — presenting the latest Chef platform strategy
This is an open call. If you work with Chef products successfully and want to share your wins with an audience from across the globe, now is your chance. Or maybe you solved a massive challenge within your organization and have lessons that can be helpful to others? Do you have a story about DevSecOps, Cloud Security, CSPM, or Compliance that you want to share? If you are confident your idea will work for ChefConf, send us your ideas before June 30.

But, if you need a little more convincing, learn why you should say yes to being a speaker; check out these top 5 reasons to become a ChefConf speaker.

Show Off; It’s Okay. Showcase your Thought Leadership and Tips and Tricks
Arguably the most critical aspect of your presentation is the topic, and it is the one aspect that will hook the audience in and keep them invested in what you are talking about. Not to mention, it highlights your expertise in DevSecOps.

Are you discussing current and upcoming industry trends based on analyst reports and your own professional experience? Is there a project you or your team have been actively working on using Chef products making waves within your organization? Are you a manager who has recently adopted a new style for their employees? This is an ideal opportunity to inspire and provide personal insights to folks within DevSecOps.

Grow Your Industry Network, and Get to Meet Some Really Cool People
Last year’s ChefConf involved registrants networking virtually. This year, with a hybrid approach, people can finally exchange handshakes and business cards in person again. Attendees will meet new peers and influencers within their respective industries. And what better way to do that than speaking at the event? You will be in front of the crowd, impressing everyone with your subject authority. Chances are, they will want to meet you afterward.

** Gain Support from the Chef Community**
Before you present, Chef’s Design and Product Marketing teams will provide you with feedback and materials needed to make it the best possible presentation. We aim to ensure you’re prepared and ready to go; we don’t want to send you out there looking like a deer in a headlight.

Exposure -Storytelling is a Great Way to Get Noticed
One of the essential skills for anyone is the ability to tell a good story. Especially if it is directly involved within your industry, examine what you would like to present at ChefConf 2022 and understand that your ability to articulate an exciting technology story or topic is essential in the DevOps sector. The potential impact it could have on your company and others is tremendous and could lead to other speaking opportunities. Our sessions will be recorded and available on-demand from our website for years, and we encourage you to share them.

Swag, We Know Your Love It!
Who doesn’t love free stuff? Especially stuff that is branded explicitly towards a conference?

Ready to talk at ChefConf?

We would love to hear what you’d like to share, but please submit your proposal before June 30.

Some tips for submissions:

Please keep it simple, Simon. — Use the title that clearly states the topic and highlights key points. Ensure your abstract is to the point, easy to understand, and does not include unnecessary jargon and acronyms.
Ask yourself, “Is this interesting?” — Think about what attendees want to hear and put yourself in their position. What challenges are they facing that you can help resolve? Demonstrate if you have any good use cases to share.
Please, review. — Make sure you have thoroughly proofread what you plan to submit. If unsure, don’t hesitate to ask someone else to read it.
Remember, June 30 is the deadline for submissions. We look forward to your submissions and topics. #ChefConf22

What's the Best 404 Message You've Seen Lately?

I am updating our website and want to change up the 404 message. We are a developer software enterprise solution company.

Do 404 messages help? Does it matter?

I love to be entertained and hate when there are 404 errors (who doesn't right?), but I am looking for a clever, simple, modern concept. What's your most memorable 404 message. I found a few from a HubSpot article.

GitHub
BrandCrowd
CSS Tricks !
I found a few other content worthy
I would love to hear from you are your favorite 404 messages. Hit me up!

ALPHA REACT 18 HAS ARRIVED

The React team announced earlier this week that the initial preview for React 18 is live, and work has started for the React 18 release. This is an alpha release and not suitable for production but encourages testing and feedback. Now is the time that library authors can try React 18 and provide feedback and direction before its official release. A primary goal is to prepare the ecosystem for a smooth and graduation adoption of React 18 by using existing applications and libraries.

 React 18 Good News

The upgrades provided with React 18 do not require significant code changes! We may need to repeat this and embrace the beauty of the good news. Almost all of the benefits of the upgrade do not require code changes.

React 18 Highlights | UX, Internal Architecture, and More

React 18 includes out-of-the-box improvements (automatic batching), new APIs ( ), and a new streaming server renderer with built-in support for . React 18 also includes architectural improvements for React server-side rendering (SSR) performance.

 New Opt-In Mechanism?

Concurrent Rendering (the new opt-in mechanism) and let's React prepare multiple versions of the UI simultaneously. This change is primarily behind the scenes, but it unlocks new possibilities to improve your app's actual and perceived performance.
Since concurrency in React 18 is opt-in, there are no significant out-of-the-box breaking changes to component behavior. You can upgrade to React 18 with minimal or no changes to your application code, with a level of effort compared to a typical major React release. According to the working team at React, many users will be able to upgrade within a single afternoon.

 The New Root API

This ReactDOM.render() is now called the Legacy Root API. It works the same way as React 17. You can still use this but know that it will be deprecated eventually.

New Root API

Very similar to the previous Root API. With React 18 use .
The React 18 Root API change means:

• The hydrate method and render callback are gone
• There is now a createRoot option

When you switch to the New Root API, you automatically get the new out-of-the-box improvements that come with React 18!
This change is all you need to do to upgrade the client to React 18. If you only use React client-side, you are finished.

 startTransition API

The new API helps with webpage responsiveness. The startTransition can not only keep current webpage responsive and able to perform heavy non-blocking UI updates at the same time.
Think of it when a user types in a search box, the input value is immediately updated while the research results may wai t afew milliseconds. The API provides a way to differientation between quick and delayed updates. The delayed udpates is referred to as Transition Updates.
Heavy UI or non-urgent updates we can wrap with startTransition API as:

 Server-Side Rending Improvements

React 18 offers full support for Suspense; if you remember, React 16 had support but not full support.
Suspense is a functionality set that allows for waiting for data to resolve before a state transition (delayed transitions), reducing UI clashes while data loads (placeholder throttling), and coordinating the appearance of a set of components by streaming them in order (SuspenseList). With React 18, we can break React components into smaller chunks using .

 TimeLine

There is no specific release date scheduled, but we should expect something over the next few months.

• Library Alpha: Available June 2021
• Public Beta: June 2021 + a few months
• Release Candidate (RC): Several weeks post Beta Release
• General Availability: Several weeks post RC

Alpha, Beta, Gamma? (the good old days ;)

 Alpha

The initial preview. Most features are stable, but work is being done to finalizes new APIs and stylesheets.

 Beta

Once React 18 is feature complete, the React 18 Beta will be released. The Beta version includes all of the breaking changes and new features to the final release. Beta is also a time for a larger community (outside of the library authors) to start trying React 18, provide feedback, and report any remaining issues.

 RC

When React 18 is fully feature complete and confident in the stability of the release, it becomes a release candidate.

 Stable

Then React 18 can release!

I am excited to check out the Alpha, as React 17 was the building block for the highly anticipated React 18. I would love to read your insights on the new alpha.

Angular did it again, on May 12, 2021, the newest major version of Angular arrived a stable Angular v12.0.00. I see a trend here 11/11 Angular launched v11, 5/12 Angular launched v12, what month will Angular 13 launch? X/13?

The Angular v12 major release is getting closer to “Ivy Everywhere”. The newest version enables the transition of the Angular ecosystem to the Ivy compiler. Among other improvements, the upgrade deprecates the legacy View Engine compilation and rendering pipeline in favor of the newer Ivy technology.

Angular v12 improvements include style, nullish coalescing allowing developers to write cleaner code in TypeScript and Angular templates, Webpack 5 support and TypeScript v4.2, and a stick model enabled by default to help catch errors earlier in the development cycle.

So what's next for Angular? What is the future of Angular?

Angular receives numerous feature requests both from Google and the Angular community, with constant review and evaluation build their roadmap to prioritize requests.

The future of Angular is bright, with new feature developments on the horizon:

Better Developer Ergonomics with Strict Typing

Implementing a stricter type of checking for reactive forms allows developers to catch more issues during development time.

 Reduce Framework Overhead

Removing legacy View Engine for the smaller Angular conceptual overhead (lower maintenance cost, lower complexity of codebase, and a smaller package).

 Improved Text Times and Debugging

Automatic test environment tear down improves test time and creates better isolation across tests. The goal is to change TestBed to automatically clean up and tear down the test environments after each test run.

 Optional NgModulars

Optional NgModulars allow developers to develop standalone components and implement an alternative API to declare the component’s compilation scope.

 Support Directives to Host Elements

Adding directives to host elements allows developers to augment their components with more behaviors without inheritance.

Angular Compiler as a PlugIn (tsc)

When making this a reality, the developers substantially improve build performance and reduce maintenance costs.

 Ergonomic Component Level Code-Splitting APIs

Web Applications are known for their slow initial load time. Applying a more granular code-splitting component level is one way to improve the initial load time.

What's your favorite new feature you can't wait for? Are there features you wish were listed and aren't? Please share and let's talk about the future of Angular, and if we ruled the world what we would do to make it even brighter!

Is it True? Come On, You Can Tell Me.

One of the best things about this community is we are all here to help each other. That I am grateful and so appreciative. Over the last few months I have asked questions, expanded my network, and wrote some articles to help others.
Well, I need your insight yet again. It seems to me each of the major JavaScript frameworks has a 'language' (jargon, slang, names and definitions) of its own. I'm not talking code but how things are referred to. Is this true? Does React have a different way of developer talk than Vue? If so how to I break that code? Is there a reference for this some where?

I have been studying different frameworks and attempting to understand the differences of each (with your help, I am believe it or not a little more clearer) but this how to talk to Vue devs v React devs v Angular devs. I am at a loss, who can help me solve this puzzle?

No answer is wrong, no reference or insight to small.

Let's Chat and Educate Me, Please.

Thanks!

Visual Studio Code March 2021 Highlights

Visual Studio Code has some major improvements and new features to help us save time. I am attempting to learn new coding skills and updates that can reduce my errors and save me time make me happy.

 VS Code 1.55 Updates

• Accessibility Improvements: Multi-cursor support and increased line limit.
• Updated Icons for macOS Big Sur: Brand icons match the Big Sur visual style.
• Improvements to Breakpoints: Inline breakpoints menu and more.
• Editor Status Decorations: Editor tab status decorations default.
• Customize Keyboard Shortcuts Editor: Columns keyboard shortcuts editor.
• Improved Remote Ports Management: Port forwarding autodetection, regex naming, and more.
• Terminal Profiles: Define profiles in the terminal to launch non-default shells.
• Notebook Improvements: Multiple cell selection and a more customizable editor.
• Raspberry Pi: How to install VS Code on Raspberry Pi devices.

 ShoutOuts

A shout out to a few of my favorite updates:

All Access Data Breakpoints Type Support
VS Code's generic debugger UI supports all data breakpoint access types defined in the Debug Adapter Protocol as context menu actions in the VARIABLES view:
• Break on Value Read: breakpoint is hit every time a variable gets read
• Break on Value Change: breakpoint is hit every time a variable gets changed
• Break on Value Access: breakpoint is hit every time a variable is read or changed.

notebook.diff.ignore output

Increased Limit for Screenreader
Visual Studio Code has increased the number of lines that a "Say All" command can read. Before this release, there was a 100 line limit. With this release, there is a 1000 line limit that a screen reader can announce at one time.
The setting
editor.accessibilityPageSize
has been deprecated. VS Code supports this setting, but the plan is to drop this setting in the future entirely.

Terminal Profiles
The terminal supports defined profiles, (see terminals dropdown) to launch non-default shells:

VS Code automatically detects and surfaces more commonly used shells through this menu. You can also be configured using the
terminal.integrated.profiles.<platform>
setting to add new profiles, change existing profiles or remove default profiles.

Improvements to Breakpoints
The inline menu includes function breakpoints, editing conditions, and hit counts. The flow is much easier with more user control.

Remote Development

Feature highlights in 1.55 include:
• Double-click to name ports
• Configure default port detection behavior
• Updated experience for cloning a repository in a container volume

Faster Snap launch

The snap package now uses the
lzo
compression algorithm, which provides faster launch times.

Notable Fixes
• 74505: Emmet built-in plugin cheats starting with @ expand only inside blocks
• 97632: Emmet kicks in when editing pure xml documents
• 107506: Debug Variables View does not show multiple variables from Debug Adapter when names are not unique
• 112675: Emmet abbreviations are not working in .scss files
• 113801: Tab wrap - tab should not fill all spare space when wrap to new line
• 115814: Unable to type in Chinese in the integrated terminal
• 117350: Should Home/End, PageUp/PageDown also navigate in actions?
• 117967: Copy + Paste automatically open file in new tab
• 118210: debug console shouldn't collapse messages when they have different source locations
• 118557: Strange behavior of files.exclude in workspace with nested folders
• 118839: My screen reader does not find information about a remote connection in the status bar
• 119585: All problems disappear when closing file

For more information and details, check out the VS Code 1.55.

What are your favorite enhancements and why? I need all the tips and tricks can you offer.

Code on!

Are Devs Dog or Cat People?

Are you a cat person or a dog person? Most of my dev peers are cat people, and I wonder if that is true across the dev space. Based on my barely statically valuable sample I think developers might be cat people. I am both a dog and cat person, but I lean to the puppy power side.
I found this blog to try to penetrate devs' minds and thought I would share it with the team. https://devetry.com/blog/not-cat-person-how-work-with-a-software-engineer/
One dev had this to say, "Dogs are like Windows, requires a lot of attention. Cats are like Linux, low maintenance."

The Typical Dog Person

If dogs tend to be energetic, faithful, and easy to get along with, well, so do the people who love them. But survey author and psychologist Sam Gosling, Ph.D., admits that the differences between cat and dog people aren't huge. "There are certainly many, many cat people who are extroverts and many, many dog people who aren't," Gosling says.

The Typical Cat Person

Do you prefer to spend time on your own? Always game to try new things? Then you could be a cat person. The survey found that cat owners were more likely to be curious, unconventional in thinking and actions, and more prone to worry than dog people.

Can a Pet Predict Your Personality?

Are you a cat person or a dog person? The answer may say a lot about your personality. A survey done by the University of Texas at Austin found that some common ideas about pet lovers may be true. You may also be a lot more like your furry friend than you ever realized.

Personality Trait: Conscientious

The online survey asked people to rate themselves as "cat people" or "dog people." Then people answered questions designed to reveal their true personality. Dog people were 11% more conscientious than cat people. What it means:
• Self-disciplined
• Strong sense of duty
• Tend to be "planners"

Personality Trait: Extroverted

Do you seize the day? If you're a dog person, you likely do. Dog people were 15% more extroverted than cat people in the survey. What it means:
• Outgoing
• Enthusiastic
• Positive
• Energetic

Personality Trait: Extroverted

Do you seize the day? If you're a dog person, you likely do. Dog people were 15% more extroverted than cat people in the survey. What it means:
• Outgoing
• Enthusiastic
• Positive
• Energetic

Personality Trait: Agreeable

According to the survey, if you're a dog person, you're 13% more likely to agree with a cat person. Agreeable people tend to be:
• Trusting
• Altruistic
• Kind
• Affectionate
• Sociable

Zoom Out

If we zoom outside of the dev arena, a current study shows 46% are dog people, and 12% are cat people.

Are you a dog or a cat person? Please comment below and I will keep you posted on the results.

Is MAUI the Future of .NET? Preview 4 now Available!

BREAKING NEWS… Microsoft announces today, 5.25.2021, the MAUI Preview 4 availability.

What's a preview? Each MAUI preview introduces more features and controls for the newest multi-platform toolkit, and general availability is set to go live this November. .NET MAUI now has enough controls and features to build functional applications for all the supported platforms, new support capabilities for Blazor on the desktop and Visual Studio support progress.

Most know that Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian Island also known as the "The Valley Isle", known for its world-famous beaches. The newest .NET feature will soon become a world-famous platform, the future of cross-platform app development! .NET Multi-Platform App UI (MAUI) is the next advancement of cross-platform UI solutions for .NET developers.

 Where, Who?

Any .NET developer can .NET Maui anywhere from Pittsburgh, PA to California, to Japan, to Germany, to Senegal back to the beautiful Maui Island. The .NET MAUI simplifies the alternatives for .NET developers, providing a single stack for all modern workloads: (think macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. The native features for each platform and UI control in a simple, cross-platform API to deliver no-compromise user experiences while sharing more code than before.

 Wait, Why?

Wait, why use .NET MAUI when we have Xamarin (and Xamarin has only been around for 7 years)? Xamarin technologies is genuinely a fan-favorite by developers everywhere. For .NET developers, Xamarin has provided one of the easiest ways to make cross-platform apps and share code. The Xamarin teams and community are always available for feedback, code-cheats with a passion for making the product better. Does this mean the sunset of Xamarin? With the advent of .NET MAUI, some may be sad to see the sunset for the beloved Xamarin brand.

 Say What?

.NET MAUI is the evolution of Xamarin.Forms. It is extended from mobile to desktop scenarios with UI controls rebuilt from the ground up for performance and extensibility.

.NET MAUI holds much promise towards a top-notch consistent UI framework for .NET developers to build cross-platform native apps for mobile and desktop.

 How??!

In a sea-shell (see what I did there?) MAUI is:

Cross-Platform, Native UI

Single Project, Single Code Base

Deployment to multiple devices, mobile, and desktop

An evolution of Xamarin.Forms

Targeting .NET 6, previews end of year
