Let’s be honest: standard black-and-white QR codes are practical, but they are also… well, ugly. They often clash with beautiful UI/UX designs and feel like a “utility” rather than a part of the brand experience.

I’m Tuyen Le, and I spent the last few months building customqr.org to solve this. I wanted to create a tool that is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and gives you total control over how your QR codes look.

What makes CustomQR different?
Most “free” generators out there gatekeep the best features behind a subscription. I wanted to keep this accessible for everyone—from indie hackers to designers.

Why I built this?
As a developer, I noticed that most “Custom QR” libraries were either too heavy or the web tools were cluttered with ads. I focused on making the UI of https://customqr.org/ clean, fast, and intuitive.

How to Overcome Criticism on Social Media

A week ago, I shared my product in a developer community. In my mind, I had already imagined the outcome: people discussing the product, appreciating the effort, maybe even giving constructive feedback. I expected curiosity, encouragement, or at least a few helpful comments.

But reality turned out differently. Instead of thoughtful discussions, I found myself reading comments like:

“People would just use Behance instead.”

“I don’t see how this is useful at all.”

“The best portfolio is still your own website. Why would anyone put it on your platform?”

At first, I was disappointed. I had spent months building something I believed in, and I hoped others would see its value. Receiving those harsh words felt like a punch to the stomach. For a brief moment, I even questioned whether it was worth continuing.

One sleepless night, and the thought lingered in my head for two or three days afterward. There were moments when I doubted my own product. But then, in a fleeting moment while playing with my daughter — she’s just over a year old — I suddenly realized what truly matters to me. I’m striving for life, for my little family. So why should I let my emotions be swayed by strangers?

Then I took a step back. I realized that criticism—whether fair or not—is an inevitable part of putting your work out into the world. And more importantly, it can be a hidden source of growth.

When I looked closer, I found insights within the noise:

The mention of Behance and Dribbble reminded me that I needed to sharpen my platform’s unique positioning.

The comment about personal websites showed me that I should communicate more clearly why my product exists and who it’s truly for.

This shift in perspective changed everything. Instead of seeing those remarks as rejection, I began to treat them as pointers. They didn’t invalidate my work; they highlighted where I could improve.

Here’s what I learned: overcoming criticism isn’t about ignoring it, nor is it about letting it crush you. It’s about filtering the noise to extract valuable lessons while staying true to your vision.

Because the truth is: if you’re building something meaningful, criticism will come. And that’s not a bad thing—it means people are paying attention.

So the next time you face negative comments, remember: every “harsh word” is either a distraction you can let go of, or a hidden clue that can make your work better. Don’t let criticism stop you. Let it refine you.

From Idea to Reality

It all started 2 years ago when I first open-sourced a personal portfolio project. I shared it across Facebook communities and received tremendous attention (which was a huge success and motivation for me).

That project utilized the most prominent technologies of the time: Vue3, Nuxt3, TypeScript, Pinia... But it was limited to just the front-end.

1 years later, during a period affected by layoffs and unemployment, I came up with an idea to build a portfolio creation platform not just for developers, but for all working professionals - anyone who needs to stand out among thousands of other candidates. That's when the idea for the Myportfolify platform was born.

Initial Challenges:

As a front-end developer, transitioning to full-stack was like jumping from a safe zone into a vast ocean. I had to learn backend from scratch - Node.js, database design, API architecture, cloud deployment. Those sleepless nights debugging servers, system crashes, or simply understanding how systems work made me want to give up countless times.

From Programming to Marketing:

But the biggest challenge wasn't coding - it was marketing. After completing the MVP, I realized that "build it and they will come" is just a myth. I had to learn content writing, running ads, SEO optimization, understanding customer personas, launches Product Hunt, share social, communication... From an introverted developer, I was forced to become a storyteller and community builder.

The Turning Point:

This is the era of AI explosion, a golden opportunity for developers like us to completely transform how we work. AI isn't just a support tool - it has become an intelligent 24/7 colleague.

Regarding development speed: What used to take 2-3 days to code and debug now takes just a few hours. AI can generate boilerplate code, suggest solutions, and even detect bugs before we notice them. I once spent an entire morning fixing a TypeScript error, but with GitHub Copilot, it suggested a fix in just 30 seconds.

Overcoming Difficulties:

After 8 difficult months, some have financial difficulties, and countless sleepless nights, Myportfolify finally came to life. With the first 50 users and their honest feedback, I believe the platform will be well-received.

It's been a long journey with emotions ranging from disappointment to joy and hope. Currently, the initial phase is complete, but I know there's still a long journey and challenges ahead. Whether the platform succeeds or fails, I'm certain I don't regret the journey I've been through and what it has brought to me personally.
