Hi Guys,

The question is, has programming gotten big enough that someone can actually quit their job to pursue a career as a programmer?

What are the Pros and Cons of taking this step?

We share a lot of questions concerning issues encountered on the projects we are working on but nothing about the project itself.

Let’s know a bit more about the current projects you are working on

Hi everyone,

For someone trying to get a job in tech but has a graphics design background, what kind of roles should this person be looking for, and what added skills do you advice this person to acquire to have an edge.

Any professional advice??

Hi Guys,

Am an entrepreneur and tech founder. I have never really built a product myself for over 5yrs being a founder but have hired developers to do so. Right now i want to learn some programming languages and fully immerse myself into the space, what do you suggest? is this a good move?

Need Help With An Example of Clean, Elegant code VS Bad, Messy Code

Evening everyone,

I currently teach a programming class and am teaching them from Scratch, my current batch of students are all exceptionally clever but end up doing a huge massive chunk of code for something that could really only take a handful of lines of code.

When I sat with them and talked about how you should think about how clean, elegant code is far more impressive than huge chunks of code that’s all over the place - it seemed to fall on deaf ears. I think they’re currently thinking the more code they have on the screen the more epic their program is.

What I wanted to bring them in their next class is an example of code (hopefully for the same problem) showing a really messy and bad piece of code, and also the clean, elegant solution to show the point I am trying to make.

Does any one have any examples they could point me in the direction of? It can be a really basic problem and solution, I just want to show how say, sure you could write 200 lines of code to do one thing, but a bit of thought could lead to say 25-50 lines doing the same thing, far more efficiently and cleaner.

Thanks in advance!

Five Rules You Should Stick to when Refactoring a Code

Rule 1: A method should not have more than five lines

This rule prevents a method from performing too many tasks. If a method performs too many tasks, it is advisable to divide it into smaller methods.

Rule 2: Only inherit from interfaces

Usually, when refactoring a code, one would inherit from classes or abstract classes. However, it is better to only inherit from interfaces because we promote tight coupling when sharing code between classes.

Rule 3: No interfaces with only one method

You shouldn't have interfaces that only have one implementation. This helps you reduce boilerplate code.

Rule 4: If only at the start

If statements should always be at the top of a method. Nothing else should happen after the “If” statement. This doesn't mean that we should separate the “If” from the “else” (they go together).

Rule 5: Never use “If” with “else”

You should not use “If” with “else” unless you check against a data type. Using if-else statements makes the code more rigid because you're saying that a decision has to be made at a specific point.

What rule(s) of your own would you be adding to the list?
