How I Passed the DP-300 Exam by Improving My Preparation Approach

Back in the days when I was a database admin specializing in Azure, I had slight feelings of confidence; I had worked with SQL Server and Azure, and would easily perform tasks on databases in production environments, but I didn’t have that same confidence with a Microsoft certification, as Microsoft uses the test to measure your ability to think like a real DBAs in real-world scenarios, rather than just memorizing features of the product.

My goal was to attain the Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate accreditation by April 2, 2026, which was active at the time of writing this post, had a test code of DP-300 and is listed as a future update on the certification webpage with an English release on April 24, 2026, it was not slated for retirement. This certification is targeted at individuals who work with Azure SQL Database services, SQL Server installed on Azure VMs, and individuals who use hybrid compute solutions involving both SQL Server and SQL Azure.

What DP-300 test looks like

I found that the information about the test on the Microsoft website is straightforward and clear; it is administered through a testing company called Pearson VUE and you can take it through a test center or on your own home using a web-camera and via the OnVUE system, provided that your system meets their requirements.According to Microsoft, you'll have 100 minutes to complete the exam. Their consumer-facing exam experience page states that "Most certification exams usually feature between 40 and 60 questions, although your exam's number of questions will change over time." Additionally, interactive questions may be present on your test, not just multiple-choice ones.

Most people still visualize exam scores in percentage terms; therefore, it is critical to understand how Microsoft scores its exams. An exam's score is based on a rating of 1 – 1000 points; if you score at least 700 points on an exam, you are considered successful. Scoring 700 points is not equal to answering 70% of the questions correctly; your final score is based on a combination of both subject matter tested and difficulty level.

As a result of my experience working with Microsoft certification exams, I was encouraged to create practical scenarios to learn (or memorize) the information needed for success on this type of exam.

Regarding exam requirements, recommended background of an examinee

While you will not have to complete another certification exam to complete DP-300, Microsoft provides a basic audience description regarding those who might be interested in taking DP-300 and obtaining the related certifications. According to the Microsoft Study Guide for DP-300, "You should have subject matter expertise in designing and implementing solutions for building database solutions across multiple workloads using the Azure SQL databases and performing SQL on-premise."

Furthermore, the Microsoft Exam Certification page indicates that candidates who will benefit from the certification will have been Database Administrators who have been responsible for managing Azure SQL DB, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server via an Azure VM. Therefore, while you can register for an exam without having to complete a prerequisite certification exam, you will not receive the same opportunity if you are a first-time candidate. The Certification page is currently active and available for scheduling and renewing, and Microsoft has confirmed that all role-based certification has an expiration of certification unless you choose to renew it via free online assessment via Microsoft Learn.

Exam Skills Breakdown: Why It Feels Harder Than It Looks

The skills measured, and why the DP-300 exam seems more challenging than it appears

According to Microsoft's current Study Guide, by April 24, 2026 the skills measured in the exam will be split into five categories: plan and implement data platform resources, implement a secure environment, monitor and optimize database resources, configuration and management of automate processes, and plan and configure high availability and disaster recovery processes. The public certification site displays the same five categories of skills.

From what I experienced, this is the reason DP-300 will seem to be more difficult than you can tell from an outsider's perspective; it is not a database theory/evaluation. The expectation will be to have an operational aspect for your thinking related to it. As previously stated, the content from Microsoft describes how actual administrative work should be performed, and descriptions of their products in addition to prep study guides that align to the objectives outlined by Microsoft continue to highlight performance tuning, scenario-based questions, HA/DR, automation, and real-world troubleshooting. I have seen many candidates such as those who have a technical or academic background (T-SQL-centric only) or only have experience in portal-based Azure administrative work become exposed to their lack of basic knowledge fairly quickly.

Pricing, Scheduling & Where to Take it

In the United States, Microsoft's certification price for DP-300 is $165 USD; in Europe the price is €126 EUR. These certification prices are based on the country or region the exam is taken in and, therefore, will vary between countries/regions. For example, the price for India on the localized Microsoft certification web page is ₹4865 INR.

The certification schedule is available continuously (not tied to a fixed annual session) and can be scheduled through Pearson VUE from the Microsoft Certification Page. Exam delivery options include online or test center, and you can schedule an exam no more than 90 days prior to your desired exam date. If you would rather take the DP-300 at a physical location than through online proctoring, you can use the test center locator provided by Pearson VUE.

In terms of city-specific locations, the answer is "it depends". The location you choose to test in will depend on the availability of appointments in the area and overall inventory to book. Both Microsoft and Pearson VUE will direct you to the scheduling or test center locator process for more specific city location information instead of publishing a definitive list of cities on the certification website.

The First Approach I Took and Why it Did Not Work for Me

The first thing I did was the typical busy administration error of reading through documentation, skimming study notes, watching a few basic review videos and then assuming my job experience would fill any blank spaces for me. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

I do not lack access to knowledge or a lack of access to adequate information; rather I simply didn't have enough time or have to invest time in studying for this exam.Lack of repetition in an exam format. Microsoft states that the Practice Assessments provided at no charge are provided to determine how ready you are and where you may have a knowledge gap, but they also disclaim that those questions are NOT the same as an actual exam and are not a substitute for training or experience. This aligns with my feelings. I read to gain an understanding of the concepts but I was still not pacing, I stayed consistent with pacing, nor I did not remain calm when it came to test taking under pressure.

Why I made the decision to use CERTIFICATION EXAM

The moment I started to look for something that would be useful on a regular basis was my turning point. There were many people who for the first time were searching for DP-300 Dumps like I had; what I needed was to find a simulator with repetition built-in, that allowed me to track where I was weak, and ensured I had a predetermined amount of time to complete a specific number of questions.

The layout of the product on the DP-300 quiz page in CERTIFICATION EXAM is what motivated me to pursue it as my CERTIFICATION EXAM. The current DP-300 simulator has 340 questions, 50 questions per test, both practice exam and exam modes, mobile app access, and offline use were all factors for me moving over from DP-300 Dumps. In addition, being able to utilize the offline, mobile app capabilities when I was in situations where I either waited to go to my next meeting or during my commute was helpful.

The most impactful part of my routine was performing the cycle of trying, reviewing, and repeating. Once I started to identify the skill areas from the Microsoft exams across multiple practice contexts, I did not see the exams as a collection of topics but rather as a job role, which in turn resulted in consistent scores.

What helped on the day of the exam

On the exam day itself, I did not gain an advantage simply by seeing the identical questions on the exam – I gained an advantage because I had had the opportunity to practice repeatedly under time pressure such that the exam environment did not feel as imposing on exam day. In addition, Microsoft provides an exam sandbox environment that allows candidates to familiarize themselves with the exam interface and types of questions (something I feel that many candidates would benefit from).

The areas of the exam that felt the most “real-world” to me on exam day were those that dealt with configuration security, selection of monitoring tools, selection of appropriate performance tradeoffs, and making HA/DR decisions. This is consistent with the structure of the official exam. The surprise was not the content of the exam but instead was the frequency with which a question would require a judgement call versus a simple recall of information. Thus, reading alone has not provided me with sufficient preparation for an exam.

How passing the DP-300 changed me

I wouldn't expect passing the DP-300 to instantly change my professional path; however, it does relate closely with the field of database administration and Azure Data Platforms as well as the skills necessary for handling Azure Database Administration and/or managing Activities in both the Hybrid SQL and Cloud SQL IAM Models; therefore, this certification is a key qualification for professionals providing database administration services in either the Hybrid SQL Model or the Cloud SQL Model (e.g., Azure Database Administrator, SQL Database Administrator, Cloud Database Engineer, Data Platform Operations Roles).

The truthful response to the salary question is that there is no official "DP-300 Salary." The only thing available are salary data for the various job categories that this certification supports. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that as of May 2024, database administrators earn an average annual salary of $104,620 in the U.S.A., and according to Indeed, the average base salary for database administrators as of March 2026 in India was approximately ₹6.89 Lakh per annum and in Germany according to Glassdoor, the approximate salary of a database administrator was about €59,000 per year as of April 2026; however, the median and average base salaries are only general reviews of the value of these Certifications and therefore do vary considerably depending on which job you perform.

Alternatives to the CERTIFICATION EXAM – A REAL COMPARISON

While evaluating different methods of preparation for the DP-300 exam, I found that the majority of all options could be classified into four categories: Microsoft’s free Exam Ready Tools, Official Paid Practice Tests by Microsoft, Books & Structured Curriculum and Third-party Mock Exam Platforms and Assessments.

Microsoft Learn Practice Assessments

Microsoft provides free access to their own Practice Assessments, which are fully integrated into the DP-300 Certification Exam Process.According to Microsoft, they assist with evaluating readiness, filling in knowledge gaps and understanding the format/wording of questions likely to appear on the exam. However, Microsoft is clear that the questions presented here do not represent either the same content as the actual exam; nor do they reflect the actual length or complexity of the exam. Furthermore, these materials should not replace training and/or hands-on experience with the actual products.

As far as practice banks go; if you desire a larger independent practice bank and offline mobile drilling; then the CERTIFICATION EXAM will appear to have a significant advantage over the Microsoft Free Self Assessment Tool. The current offering of 340 questions for the DP-300 simulator, 50 question tests, practice mode/exam mode and offline use on mobile devices provides more content than Microsoft's free self-assessment will do by itself. Thus, while Microsoft's free self-assessment tool can be of great benefit; it tends to serve more as a checkpoint rather than as a complete daily practice system.

MeasureUp / MindHub official practice test

The next closest direct competitor to Microsoft was the MeasureUp / MindHub Official Practice Test for the DP-300 available at a web price of $99.00. The MeasureUp practice test is composed of 160 questions, online simulations, comprehensive answer explanations, study and certification mode, drill down reporting capabilities, and an access period of 6 months. The official documentation states that MeasureUp is Microsoft Certified Practice Test Provider.

Overall, this is a serious option for someone wanting to obtain their certification through a legal; paid; practice test system. However; the CERTIFICATION EXAM overall appears to have a larger number of raw questions; as well as offline/mobile connectivity with regards to examination for the DP-300.One of MeasureUp's strongest selling points is the emphasis on performance-based simulations and its designation as an Official Provider. There is no definitive answer as to which option is superior; both serve two different preferences.

Microsoft Press' Exam Ref DP-300

Another genuine option is Exam Ref DP-300 by Microsoft Press. Prices are $39.99 for the print edition, $38.39 for the eBook, and content is organized around the testing objectives assessed, what-if scenarios, and all five major objective areas, making it an excellent fit for those who learn best by reading and using organized study rather than just quizzing.

CERTIFICATION EXAM is an entirely different sort of resource compared to this; CERTIFICATION EXAM does very well in terms of depth/structured reading/intentional concept reinforcement vs. how well CERTIFICATION EXAM does at steady/practice oriented pacing and rapid fire switching between topics. There is no reason to substitute either resource unless you already know your ideal style of learning.

Whizlabs

Another well-known competitor for preparing for Azure certifications is Whizlabs. Their DP-300 mock exam offerings returned search results showing 3 full-length exams and 165 unique questions with tools for objective-based examination practice, elaborate answer explanations, and extensive contribution from other Whizlabs documents - video courses, practice examinations, hands on labs, and Azure Sandboxes.

These items make Whizlabs' certification services a more complete training solution than the above. If you are interested in a brand that provides labs and practice capabilities, Whizlabs may be an appropriate candidate.If you're looking for more options to prepare for the DP-300 exam with lots of practice over the phone and offline, then you're likely still using the currently indexed CERTIFICATION EXAM DP-300 page, which has more volume and is easier to use than all other sites combined.

Udemy DP-300 Practice Exams

Other than the fact that Udemy has multiple DP-300 practice exams, I do not believe I can offer anything new at this point. I may point out, however, that the current wording of one of Udemy's DP-300 practice exam course pages is an example of this.

As noted above, one Udemy course page states that complete exam domain coverage, realistic examination simulation, scenario-based question content, and in-depth explanation of both right and wrong answers were part of the course. Another Udemy course page indicates that its exams are not official, which is another point of moral honesty in my opinion. The prices for Udemy courses can and do vary at least somewhat according to discounts or promotions, so I would caution against easily identifying a single price as being stable.

By contrast, the CERTIFICATION EXAM sees itself as a dedicated DP-300 practice exam simulator rather than a productized marketplace course. However,as someone who prefers course bundles, instructor-led framing, or various preparation methods, Udemy may still be a viable option for your needs.

The Study Checklist I Wish I Had Followed from the Beginning

My advice for you after passing is simple:

Read Microsoft's study guide BEFORE doing anything else! The guide provides information about the content being measured by the exam today vs. two years ago.
Use Microsoft's free practice assessment and test sandbox as early as possible and not as a last-minute preparation tool. The practice assessment and sandbox will assist in establishing your expectations for both the exam and exam content.
Complete sufficient timed practice to the point that 100 minutes of exam time no longer seems like an abstract concept. Microsoft's exam page (as well as exam experience guidance) clearly indicate that time constraints and different types of questions will be some of your challenges.
If you work daily with Azure, do not assume your daily work with Azure is enough to provide you with HA/DR, monitoring, security, or automation preparation equivalent to what will be on the exam. The official skills competency matrix is far wider than most people who work in most production positions see it to be.
Make sure to register with your own Microsoft account and not an organizational work or school AAD account. Microsoft provides clear warnings regarding the fact that organizationally stored exam records may be permanently lost if you leave the organization.

Final Remarks

Passing DP-300 was due to a combination of many things rather than any one additional resource I identified. Rather it was a significant change from my previous study habits to something that made sense and being willing to no longer rely solely on reading material. With the use of current Microsoft evidence before me over time, regular repetition, time limit practice, and a method to provide me with knowledge gaps, I established a routine that contributed greatly to passing DP-300.

The CERTIFICATION EXAM option matched my routine well as far as providing ample opportunity to practice, meet exam preparation and support requirements, and provide offline access via mobile devices. In addition, the CERTIFICATION EXAM provided the most accurate market knowledge gap between what I knew and what was required of me when I took the exam. That knowledge gap was enough to provide all of the information I needed to pass the exam.

How I Passed the CKA Exam While Working Full-Time Using Hands-On Practice Instead of Endless Reading

I have been working in IT for several years, focusing primarily on infrastructure projects and had very little exposure to containers and Kubernetes. The vast majority of my experience was theoretical and had only worked with clusters, manifests, services, and a few day-to-day commands in a very casual sense. The CKA Exam is an exam that tests your ability to actually perform certain tasks under pressure, rather than your ability to recognize an answer to a multiple-choice question. This is the main reason my study plan changed halfway through my studies.

I started by doing what a lot of other engineers do; I was reading a lot of reference material, watching too many videos, and not practicing enough. I had detailed notes on networking, storage, RBAC, and troubleshooting; however, I was still going too slow with my exam preparation because when you do the CKA Exam, you were given 2 hours and the test is performance-based, meaning you will be assigned around 15 to 20 tasks to complete, all of this done using an online proctored environment. The Linux Foundation rates your CKA Exam as current, and if you complete the test today, it will be based on the most current minor releases of Kubernetes. Therefore, your speed, accuracy of command, and ability to recover when things go wrong, is more important than having passive knowledge/experience in Kubernetes.

What the CKA is like in 2026

The current public information from the Linux Foundation provides a clear overview of the key features of the CKA. The exam will be delivered online in a proctored manner through PSI and candidates will take the exam on their own computers, rather than at a traditional testing site. The current public price for the certification can be found in the standard certification listing ($445), and the scheduling process involves going through the Linux Foundation portal, with appointments managed by PSI. Candidates will have 12 months after registering to schedule an exam, with availability being shown in a rolling manner (availability of slots visible typically up to 90 days) and a minimum lead time of 24 hours on the earliest appointment that can be booked.

The Linux Foundation has published an official CKA scoring model. The pass mark for the exam is 66%, and the results of the exam are reported via automated means typically within 24 hours, subject to technical exceptions. This is important because this is not a certification where the candidate will be left wondering if they did well for a week. The results of the exam will usually be known fairly quickly so you will know whether or not your performance was acceptable.

The Exam Blueprint explains why many competent engineers are still challenged by the CKA exam. The current domain weights assigned to the 5 sections of the exam indicate that you will be required to troubleshoot issues 30 percent of the time (and that is the largest domain), cluster architecture and installation/configuration 25 percent, services and networking 20 percent, workloads and scheduling 15 percent and storage 10 percent. Therefore, you will most often be rewarded for your ability to troubleshoot and repair an issue versus creating resources out of memory; that is exactly the same experience I had. The more difficult task was not writing YAML but rather maintaining your composure during times when things happen differently than how you expected.

This changed my way of studying

The first phase of studying involved too much reading research papers, looking over summaries, and convincing myself I was capable of knowing the concept. While I did know them, and I could tell my self that they are all I need to learn.

My breakthrough came when I switched to using the command line and putting myself under a time restraint to record multiple items within a period. I quit using CKA Dumps because they created a false sense of security and did not allow me to test myself against what the exam was measuring, fixing service connectivity issues, looking for event details, troubleshooting CoreDNS, validating RBAC, etcd backups and recovering from minor but costly errors when under time restrictions.

Another thing that changed for me was the way I measured my progress. Rather than asking, “Did I complete this lesson?” I began asking myself, “Can I complete this task in one attempt with no panic level?” This one change made studying more productive.

What worked for me in creating a study plan

While preparing for the exam as a full-time employee, I will create a study routine that I can duplicate at the end of the day when I’m tired. I also had a busy work schedule, so I was pretty much only doing 60 to 90 minutes of studying after my workweek was over. On weekends, I normally did a longer block of time dedicated to simulation and movement review; I also did not try to complete every domain every day; I completed them in rotation.

A few of the study examples I completed at night included: one evening would be cluster architecture and upgrades, the following evening would be networking, and an additional evening was going to be dedicated strictly to troubleshooting. In addition, once or twice a week, I ran timed mixed practice sessions to put me in the switching cost of an actual exam environment. The switching cost is extremely underestimated. It takes longer to change your thought process from storage, to scheduling, to networking, then to debugging than anyone would like to believe.

The areas that killed my time the most were the areas you would expect based off of public exam weighting: troubleshooting and cluster internals. I was able to perform the task with no issues when I recognized the task. I was not able to perform the task as quickly or efficiently if the symptom was indirect. For example, I could create a deployment without issues when the traffic was failing due to either a selector mismatch, DNS problem, or a policy issue. I had to discipline myself to check in one fixed order instead of improvising. This reduced my anxiety and wasted commands.

Why I Chose CERTIFICATION EXAM for the Last Push

I did not solely rely on a single source of preparation for the practical exam. I believe that is impractical in the real world. However, the reason I chose CERTIFICATION EXAM as one of my main sources for repetition is that it provided me with a flexible means of fitting the exam preparation into my weekly workflow and also provided enough structure to continue to practice rather than become sidetracked.

The product pages and platform pages provide public access to several important characteristics for my needs: web simulator and mobile phone application access; devices with synchronized progress; bookmark feature; customizable practice mode; exam mode; regular updates; and offline capabilities for application users with subscription access. Specifically, the CKA-specific product page also lists that the CKA PDF currently contains 81 questions, and these same questions can be practiced over the application and web simulator via custom timer settings and answer counts. These characteristics closely match my study habits when I have little time for study: short mobile sessions, long timed desktop sessions, and bookmark review of repeat errors.

What I valued most when I was using it regularly was neither of the marketing selling features. It was the method of completing the process. The workflow allowed me to complete a short mobile session, flag weak areas by marking specific questions or topics in the process, and return to continue preparation from another device without loss of workflow or disruption. When preparing for the exam around work, meetings, and family it does not seem like a large benefit until the time comes to utilize this flexibility.

How I Used the Certification Exam:

I did not think of the Certification Exam as something magical. Instead, I thought of it as a way to create a lot of repeated practice and to create a lot of stress.

I first used the practice mode, which was good for short, targeted practice sessions. If I thought of my weaknesses in networking or troubleshooting logic, I would use the practice mode to create a short and focused practice session. The certification exam has a feature that allows users to configure the length of a practice session and the number of questions for each handling (for ex: if I want to do a lot of quick practice each day or if I want to do a long practice session). I was also using it to help create fast, repeatable recognition of an exam by creating a very short practice session.

I used the exam mode when I wanted to experience mental fatigue. The certification exam public site clearly outlines that the exam mode is used for those who want to be able to receive a true exam simulation. I also did this these evenings when I wanted to see if I could still think clearly after working all day. My scores were not always good in those sessions, but they taught me the truth.

I used bookmarks to keep track of missed questions due to rush; if a question was related to networking, scheduling, or interpreting failures, I bookmark it and return; the certification exam publicity clearly shows that this is a great feature in terms of keeping track of progress and using web or mobile devices. This matched my method for reviewing areas of weakness in short bursts.

The result of these 3 things (practice mode, exam mode, and bookmarking) was very simple; my mistakes have been more predictable. This was positive! When you create predictable mistakes, you can fix them.

Mistakes from my past

The initial misstep I made was thinking I could recall a lot of random command. Fluency in recalling the commands you will need to complete the exam is important, but if you are trying to retain too much information without understanding how all of the tasks are connected, it can lead to poor performance under stressful situations.

The second misstep I made was not treating troubleshooting as its own skill. There is a reason that troubleshooting is given the most weight on the public blueprint. In my case, I was not lacking knowledge; I was sometimes jumping to the wrong tier to troubleshoot first. For example, inspecting the manifests before checking the service endpoints, or checking the node status before confirming the namespace and selectors. Not following a systematic approach will cost you minutes on the exam.

The final misstep was spending too much time making everything look nice. No one is interested in how pretty your YAML is in the real exam; all they care about is if the cluster performs correctly. Once I come to terms with that, I was able to complete the exam faster.

Exam Day & What Helped

On Exam Day, it was exactly like how the Linux Foundation described it. Working under pressure with very little room for error if you hesitate at all. The way to set up your computer system through PSI is pretty simple in theory, but you have to adhere to the environment checks, ID verification and remote proctoring rules strictly. The Linux Foundation checklist and handbook guide is an excellent way to avoid unnecessary stress prior to exam day.

I did not do one specific thing that worked, rather I established a routine.

I skimmed through all of the exam tasks first, then moved to the quick completion tasks. I tried not to become emotionally attached to a question if it seemed difficult at the beginning. Even when I did not expect an item to fail at a certain point while testing my application's functionality, I forced my way back into the same testing sequence that I practiced.

Repetition allowed me to work through all the same issues, but not because I had previously been exposed to a specific item but rather because I conditioned myself for the correct approach after having practiced troubleshooting in a consistent way. As a result, I was able to refocus on the work task without wasting five minutes getting frustrated from not knowing where to go.

What the CKA Has Meant for Me

While I do not consider the CKA to be a "switch-your-career" type of credential, it certainly serves as a powerful signal to people considering hiring me to be their Kubernetes administrator. The Linux Foundation has positioned it as evidence that a given candidate can perform the job duties of a Kubernetes administrator, and the cloud-native community treats it as a legitimate credential within the Kubernetes ecosystem. Unlike many certifications that are recognized based solely on their brand recognition or theory, the CKA certification is a performance-based, vendor-neutral exam. Therefore, it carries greater weight than a company-based certificate that is based on brand recognition or theory.

In terms of my ability to showcase my value proposition when looking for work, the CKA has strengthened my overall presentation when I apply for Kubernetes administrator, cloud operations manager, infrastructure engineer, or DevOps-style platform-based roles. The Linux Foundation specifically lists Cloud Kubernetes Administration in conjunction with the CKA credential as positions such as Kubernetes administrator, cloud operations manager, or infrastructure engineer.

There is a wide range of salary information based on role title, the market, and seniority; thus, there is no one salary number that can be reported as the true salary for someone in the role. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage for network and computer systems administrators is approximately $96,800 per year, while the median pay for computer network architects is about $130,390 per year, which is a rough official range of salaries for related jobs to the CKA credential. How certification exam has helped me more than other options available

For me: The benefit that I had from an implementation standpoint was having consistency.

KodeKloud offered the most structured learning experience with their guided labs, while the training from Linux Foundation provided the best experience with the official training. Certification Exams provided an opportunity to practice in a way that fit into my schedule better than the other two options, because it allowed me to complete small, frequent, targeted practive from anywhere and at different times, and continue to work on the same areas of weakness from another device later. The public features offered by certification exam support exactly that: Practicing mode customization, Exam mode, Bookmarks, Progress syncing, and Mobile Access with offline capabilities) were only possible through this method.

I don't believe that the use of certification exam can replace more in-depth labs. I do believe that there was a good use of this method as a practice resource for the purpose of creating a structured environment to help build repeatable behaviours that would be exhibited in an exam environment.

The preparation list I wish I had followed since the beginning

Get the official exam information first, not the community myths. Confirm that you have the most up to date version, the cost of the exam, how to be examined, and how long you will be able to take the exam from the Linux Foundation. Currently, publicly speaking, the exam cost is $445, where you can be examined online via PSI, you can only retake the exam once if you qualify, and you will have one year to use that registration from the date it is purchased.

Next, build your study layers.

Learn the concepts through official documentation or through a structured learning course. Practice the commands by running them in a working environment. I was able to pass the CKA by consistently studying all available material, rather than finding that “one perfect source.” My success came from matching my study methods with the real nature of the exam; once I realized this, everything that I did was modified. For example, my study strategies changed and included less passive studying/learning and more real-time practice like I would actually be doing on testing day as well as an honest review of my mistakes and using the tools according to the way they are intended to function. The CERTIFICATION EXAM helped greatly with repetition and review of my weak areas without wasting time because it allowed me to repeatedly test myself before attempting to go to the testing center to take the certification exam.

This is why I recommend the CERTIFICATION EXAM methodically, not haphazardly. For example, if you are building your foundational knowledge of Kubernetes, you want to use CERTIFICATION EXAM in conjunction with more comprehensive labs or classroom instruction. Conversely, if you already have a solid foundation in Kubernetes and need advanced behavior during the exam, quicker review cycles, and flexible learning methods using multiple devices, you will have great success using CERTIFICATION EXAM as part of a serious plan for passing the CKA certification.

The way that I look at taking the AZ-104 exam now and not “someday” – means that my current status as Cloud/System Administrator has changed a lot since I took the exam.

I work on an IT team(small) that consists of Cloud Admins, and there is a lot of context-switching everyday between completing tickets (finding and fixing) and multiple long-running projects (such as cleaning up user access in Microsoft Entra ID, tightening RBAC, reviewing storage and evaluating networking decisions, which seem easy until production traffic starts to flow).

For a long time, my goal has been to get a Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator (i.e., Azure Administrator Cert) to confirm my skills, however, I postponed getting this cert because I didn’t really feel that I wanted just to collect the “badges.” I wanted to have a cert that actually reflected what I do at work (that is to implement, manage, and monitor an Azure environment for my team’s use.) The AZ-104 cert matches well to that position – the cert is designed around that exact type of work.

I took the exam, passed it on my first attempt, and now would like to share my experience of taking this exam, and what I did to prepare for it and the many changes made to my study plan and how this certification FITS into it without doing it just to promote myself.

AZ-104 is still active for the Azure Administrator Associate certification.

There is some information about the previous, no longer in existence, AZ-103 test; however, there remains considerable content detailing this information regarding its retirement, as well. Prerquisites and recommended experience are two different things.

Microsoft expands on this, saying that the total time required for the testing and check-in/administrative processes can seem to exceed the time actually required (in particular for checks of identity, signing of non-disclosure agreements, or viewing video material). Therefore, the average seat time for an Associate/Expert certification test is quoted to be 100 minutes for exam length and 120 minutes actual time.

The test is being administered through Pearson VUE, either at a testing center or online via OnVUE.

Passing Score, Scoring Scale, and What You Should Know About It

According to Microsoft, technical exam scores are a 1-1000 scaled. The minimum passing score is 700 or higher, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you answered 70% of the questions correctly.

How I started and how I transitioned to a new method

My first two weeks appeared to be very productive at first glance, but in reality they were just a lot of passive learning concealed as productive activity.

Many video-based lessons I completed were completed without having tested my knowledge through practice questions.

I took notes as if I were preparing for an exam at university, rather than in preparation for a job related exam.

I did not study areas that made me uncomfortable or frustrated (networking/governance) because those would most likely cause me to fail the exams required for this approach.

The exam blueprint does not base rewards on your preferences: it bases them on coverage and judgement.

My first transition point to better study was when I used practice questions to guide my study plan (versus waiting until I had finished all learning before handling them).

What I did that worked (the sequence of timeline)

I spent 5-6 weeks preparing while working full time:

Weekdays - 60 to 90 minutes every day after work

Weekends - 2 to 3 hrs once (long study session) and 1 time short (2-3 hrs, do review and timed block)

Looped during weak areas of study until I had eliminated weak areas from study.

I did not base my decision on which was the least expensive product, nor did I choose based upon marketing hype. Instead, I followed my own criteria and wanted to have access to a practice tool that would provide me with plenty of opportunity to simulate and practice while repeating what I was learning.

According to its terms of use, the actual CERTIFICATION EXAM is a web-based simulator but it is also a mobile app and it is "consistently updated". The certification exam describes itself as being designed to provide a simulation similar to real certification exam conditions.

Also a word of caution, i found some of the marketing of the certification exam to be hyperbolic and other marketing language such as generalized "guarantees," to be a misrepresentation, and read them as mere marketing language while looking at the parts of marketing material i could verify, such as simulator location.

Mode 1: Smaller "Burst" Sets For Each Domain On A Daily Basis

On Weekdays (Monday-Friday) I would do smaller practice sets for each domain. For Example, If I did a practice set in the identity and governance domain, I was using the product for "Pattern Recognition" as opposed to trying to achieve a high score

Mode 2: Two Timed Sessions; Two Days Per Week - Building Exam Stamina

I would do two timed runs each week. Ongoing attempting to build exam stamina. It's not just that timing counts but it's also how the Microsoft has called the assessment time-based (100 minute limit). You want to feel pressure is normal (in this case).

The tracking technique (that helped fix my weakest areas) was creating a simple list called, "Mistakes that I consistently repeat". I did not use the term topic; instead, I categorized mistakes.

The effect of training my brain to read exam questions correctly (where you had to identify the right answer) under time pressure was the biggest benefit of using a quiz platform (instead of just memorization).

I scheduled the exam directly through the Microsoft portal, and took it as a proctored Pearson VUE exam (online). It could have been taken at a test centre or on-line (OnVUE) according to Microsoft and Pearson VUE.

When I sat down for my exam, it felt like a work simulation/testing with multiple-choice options. Many questions provided a choice of two answers that appeared correct, until you recognized a detail in the exam scenario/red flag.

The biggest surprise - I discovered that the exam relied heavily on "admin judgment" versus "memorization." I found myself re-reading the question’s stem a second time and then having to slow down in reading and re-answering as I became confident in answering and began to hurry.

What helped settle my nerves? Remembering that Microsoft provides scaled scoring on their exams. A score that means passing is 700+ out of an available 1–1000, however Microsoft has specifically stated that 700 does NOT equate to 70%.

That helped me to not spiral down the train of “I missed a few,” and thus “I’m done.”
