As the train winds its way back to my home town, I find myself lost in thought, replaying the events of an extraordinary day. I've just attended an exclusive algorithms workshop at Google's Dublin office, and the experience has left me both exhilarated and inspired. This blog post is my attempt to capture the essence of this remarkable event and share it with fellow tech enthusiasts and aspiring Googlers.

 The Invitation

Picture this: 35 students from across Ireland, handpicked to participate in a single, coveted event. We came from Cork, Wexford, Galway, and beyond, united by our passion for problem-solving and technology. For many of us, this workshop represented more than just a learning opportunity—it was a potential stepping stone to a coveted internship at one of the world's most innovative companies.

 The Algorithm Grill

The heart of the workshop was what I like to call "The Algorithm Grill"—a series of challenging problems designed to push our problem-solving skills to the limit. Armed with nothing more than pens and paper, we tackled these puzzles both collaboratively and individually.

As we worked, I could feel the gears turning in my mind. All those hours spent on LeetCode, all the theory I'd absorbed about depth-first search, breadth-first search, and sliding window techniques—it was all coming together in real-time. The problems were fiendishly clever, each one a perfectly calibrated test of our abilities.

What struck me most was the collaborative atmosphere. Despite the underlying current of competition (after all, we were all potential Google internship candidates), there was a palpable sense of camaraderie. We were all there to learn, to grow, and to challenge ourselves.

Google's Dublin Campus: A Glimpse into the Future of Work

Following our mental workout, we were treated to a tour of Google's Dublin offices—or should I say, office complex. With 13 buildings within walking distance of each other, the Google campus is a city unto itself.

What impressed me most wasn't just the scale, but the thought and care put into every aspect of the work environment. From state-of-the-art meeting rooms to cozy break areas, from gourmet cafeterias to game rooms, every space seemed designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and well-being.

It was clear that Google takes the concept of work-life balance seriously. The facilities and amenities on offer spoke volumes about how the company values its employees. As we toured the campus, I couldn't help but imagine myself working in such an environment, surrounded by brilliant minds and cutting-edge technology.

 Key Takeaways

The Power of Collaboration: While individual skill is important, the workshop emphasized the value of teamwork in solving complex problems.

Theory Meets Practice: The workshop bridged the gap between academic learning and real-world application, showing how theoretical concepts translate into practical problem-solving.

Innovation Requires Environment: Google's office setup demonstrated how the right environment can foster innovation and employee satisfaction.

Continuous Learning: The workshop reinforced the importance of continuous learning and practice in the ever-evolving field of technology.

Networking Opportunities: Beyond the technical aspects, the event provided invaluable networking opportunities with both peers and Google employees.

 Looking Ahead

As I reflect on this experience, I'm filled with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for my future in tech. The Google algorithms workshop was more than just a day of problem-solving—it was a glimpse into a possible future, a motivation to push harder, and a reminder of why I fell in love with computer science in the first place.

The Allure of Crypto: A Teenager's Perspective

In the ever-evolving landscape of Web3, developers like myself often find ourselves chasing the elusive dream of mass adoption, sometimes at any cost. My journey into this world began, as it does for many, with the tantalizing promise of quick riches. At the tender age of 16, armed with nothing but pocket money and an insatiable curiosity, I took my first tentative steps into the cryptosphere.

Instead of letting my modest funds languish in a traditional wallet, I decided to explore the world of investing. With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, I onramped 50 euros onto my Trust Wallet. Playing it safe(ish), I allocated 10 USD each to Bitcoin and Ethereum, the giants of the crypto world. But it was the remaining 30 USD that would set me on a wild ride I never anticipated.

Safemoon: A Lesson in Crypto Hype

Enter Safemoon, the hot new coin that promised to revolutionize tokenomics. In a move that perfectly encapsulated my youthful naivety and hunger for success, I poured my remaining funds into this unknown entity. What happened next was nothing short of intoxicating: within just three days, my investment doubled.

Suddenly, I was convinced I had cracked the code to instant wealth. I dove headfirst into the Safemoon ecosystem, tuning into every AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, joining their Discord server, and even interacting directly with the co-founders. I absorbed new concepts like burning mechanisms and tokenomics, feeling like an insider in a revolutionary movement.

The euphoria reached its peak when Safemoon started getting listed on major exchanges. Despite my limited understanding of what tokens actually were or what problems crypto was meant to solve, I was riding high on the wave of excitement.

The Inevitable Crash: A Harsh Reality Check

However, the crypto world is nothing if not unpredictable. After a solid month or two of growth and community bonding, disaster struck. Safemoon's value plummeted, crashing all the way to near zero. The once-active co-founders, whom I had come to see as close allies of the community, vanished without a trace.

The day of the crash, I felt utterly wrecked. The realization that I had fallen victim to a scam was almost too much to bear. For about a week, I wallowed in self-pity, lamenting the loss of my hard-earned money. But then, something unexpected happened.

From Despair to Curiosity: The Birth of a Web3 Explorer

As the initial shock wore off, questions began to percolate in my mind. Why did this happen? How could my money seemingly disappear into thin air? What was the underlying technology that made such scams possible?

These questions marked the true beginning of my crypto journey. No longer content with being a naive investor chasing quick gains, I transformed into an inquisitive learner, eager to understand the mechanics behind blockchain technology.

The Educational Shift: From Speculator to Student

Fast forward a year, and my life had taken a new direction. Now a computer science student, I discovered a genuine passion for coding. The world of Web3 beckoned once again, but this time, I approached it with caution and a thirst for knowledge.

I began attending Web3 hackathons, not as a starry-eyed investor, but as a budding developer eager to learn and contribute. I experimented with testnets, carefully dipping my toes into mainnet tokens. The scars from my Safemoon experience had made me acutely aware of the potential pitfalls in the crypto world.

During this period, I found myself becoming a more serious investor in cryptocurrency. However, my approach had fundamentally changed. Instead of chasing the next hot coin, I focused on understanding the technology and potential real-world applications of each project I invested in.

The Polkadot Epiphany: Finding Purpose in Web3

Another year passed, and I found myself deeply engrossed in the Polkadot ecosystem. This experience marked a profound shift in my perspective on Web3. I wasn't just a spectator or an investor anymore; I had become an active participant in a decentralized community working towards meaningful change.

What drew me to Polkadot wasn’t just its technical capabilities, but its vision for the future. The governance model of Polkadot, where decisions are made by the community in a transparent and trustless environment, felt like a glimpse into what the future of society could be. A future where systems are decentralized, where power is distributed among the people, and decisions are made for the benefit of the public, by the public. In many ways, Polkadot aligns with my belief that technology should enable a more equitable, trustless society—one where we no longer need to rely on centralized authorities, but can instead trust in code and consensus.

Suddenly, discussions about changing inflation models or debating the merits of sponsoring a sports celebrity for blockchain promotion felt deeply personal. These weren't just technical issues; they were about the future we’re building together. I realized that the ecosystem functioned as one massive decentralized DAO, making incremental changes to improve Polkadot's position in the blockchain landscape.

 A New Perspective on Value

This shift in mindset had a profound impact on how I viewed my investments. The fluctuation in DOT prices no longer dictated my mood or decisions. Instead, I focused on the quantity of DOT I held and, more importantly, how I could contribute to the ecosystem's improvement.

The wrong allocation of treasury funds felt like a personal affront, not because it might affect token price, but because it could hinder the progress of a project I deeply believed in. I found myself deeply connected to the ecosystem in a way I never imagined possible when I first bought that 10 USD of Bitcoin years ago.

 Reflection and Gratitude

As I reflect on this journey, I'm struck by how much I've grown. From a teenager chasing quick profits to a committed builder in the Web3 space, every step – even the painful ones – has been invaluable.

I'm particularly grateful to community leaders like Jay from Kusamarian, whose efforts to engage the community through initiatives like the AAG (Attempts at Governance) have been instrumental in keeping participants informed and involved in the ecosystem's development.

Looking Forward: The Future of Web3 and My Role in It

Today, as I continue to build and learn in the Web3 space, I'm more convinced than ever of its potential to drive significant technological and social change. However, I also recognize the challenges that lie ahead.

The crypto space still struggles with its image as a playground for get-rich-quick schemes. It needs more individuals to transition from speculation to education and meaningful contribution. As someone who has walked this path, I feel a responsibility to guide others and contribute to creating sustainable, valuable ecosystems beyond mere speculation.

 A Call to Action

To all the builders, developers, and community members out there: your work in educating users and building robust, useful systems is crucial. We're not just developing technology; we're shaping the future of decentralized systems and, potentially, society itself.

And to those just starting their Web3 journey: approach with curiosity, skepticism, and a willingness to learn. The road may be bumpy, but the destination – a more open, transparent, and equitable digital world – is worth the journey.

As for me, I pledge to continue building, learning, and contributing to make Web3 not just a space for speculation, but a force for positive change in the world. From scams to community, my journey in Web3 has been transformative, and I'm excited to see where it leads next.

In the fast-evolving world of blockchain technology, Polkadot stands out as one of the most innovative and promising platforms. Built to enhance the way blockchains work together, Polkadot is a multi-chain network that allows different blockchains to operate seamlessly with each other. Whether you're new to blockchain or have been following the technology for a while, Polkadot offers something exciting: a scalable, secure, and decentralized ecosystem designed to power the future of Web3.

 Why Was Polkadot Created?

Polkadot was created by Dr. Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum, to address some of Ethereum's limitations, specifically around scalability and interoperability. While Ethereum laid the groundwork for smart contracts and decentralized applications, it struggled with network congestion and scalability issues as adoption grew.

Polkadot’s architecture was designed to overcome these challenges and unlock a new level of efficiency in blockchain networks.

 How Does Polkadot Work?

At its core, Polkadot introduces a main chain, known as the Relay Chain, which connects multiple independent blockchains, or parachains. These parachains operate in parallel, sharing the Relay Chain's security and benefiting from fast and efficient transactions.

Relay Chain: The Relay Chain is the heart of Polkadot. It handles the network’s overall security, consensus, and cross-chain messaging but doesn't directly execute smart contracts. Instead, it coordinates the system of parachains.

Parachains: Parachains are independent blockchains connected to the Relay Chain. Each parachain can be customized for specific use cases—such as gaming, finance, or data storage—while still benefiting from the security of the overall network.

Sharding for Scalability: Polkadot achieves scalability through sharding—a technique where each parachain processes transactions in parallel. This dramatically increases the overall throughput of the network compared to traditional blockchains that process transactions one at a time.

Interoperability with XCM: Parachains can communicate and transfer value or data with each other through Cross-Consensus Messaging (XCM), creating an ecosystem where different blockchains can interact without friction.

 The Vision for Web3

Polkadot is more than just another blockchain project—it’s a vision for a truly interoperable Web3, where decentralized applications (dApps) and services can work together across different blockchains. By solving the issues of scalability, security, and interoperability, Polkadot is set to be a major player in the future of decentralized networks.

It's been a few months since I graduated from the Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA), and the experience continues to resonate with me. As the intensity of those five weeks settles into a tapestry of vivid memories and valuable knowledge, I find myself reflecting on how this journey has shaped my understanding of blockchain technology and influenced my professional path.
The academy, held at the National University of Singapore, was more than just an educational program—it was a deep dive into the cutting edge of blockchain technology, a crucible of innovation, and a meeting ground for some of the brightest minds in the field. Now, with the benefit of hindsight and the opportunity to apply what I've learned in real-world scenarios, I can truly appreciate the transformative nature of the PBA experience.
In this post, I want to share my journey through the academy, the challenges faced, the knowledge gained, and most importantly, how this experience continues to influence my work and perspective on the blockchain space months after graduation.

 The Academy Experience

The PBA is not your typical educational program. Hosted at the National University of Singapore, it's an intense, month-long deep dive into the world of blockchain technology, with a particular focus on the Polkadot ecosystem. From 9 AM to 6 PM every day, we were immersed in lectures, coding sessions, and collaborative projects.

Our curriculum covered a vast array of topics, starting with the foundations of cryptography and progressing through blockchain fundamentals, smart contracts, and finally, Polkadot-specific concepts and substrate development. What set this experience apart was the caliber of our instructors - core developers of Polkadot who brought unparalleled expertise and real-world insights to every session.

 A Global Community of Learners

One of the most enriching aspects of the PBA was the diversity of my fellow participants. We were a group of 80 developers from all corners of the globe, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the table. The shared workspace became a melting pot of ideas, where we could bounce concepts off each other, collaborate on projects, and engage in stimulating discussions long after the official lectures had ended.

The cohort wasn't just comprised of seasoned blockchain developers. We had individuals from various backgrounds - investors, entrepreneurs, even an investment banker and an accountant. This diversity added depth to our discussions and highlighted the far-reaching impact of blockchain technology across different sectors.

 The Challenge and the Reward

Make no mistake, the PBA is challenging. The coursework is rigorous, the pace is relentless, and the assignments are designed to push your problem-solving skills to the limit. There were many late nights fueled by coffee (I've never consumed so much in my life!) and the determination to grasp complex concepts.

But with great challenge comes great reward. The sense of accomplishment after completing a particularly difficult assignment, the "aha" moments when a complex concept finally clicks, and the bonds formed through shared struggles - these made every sleepless night worthwhile.

 Beyond the Classroom

While the academic component was intense, the PBA experience extended beyond the classroom. The campus provided a beautiful backdrop for our month of learning, offering a refreshing environment during our brief breaks. The organizing team deserves immense credit for the seamless execution of such an intensive program, ensuring that we could focus entirely on our learning journey.

 The Transformation

As I prepare to leave Singapore, I realize that I'm not the same person who arrived a month ago. The PBA has not only equipped me with technical knowledge but has also transformed my perspective on blockchain technology and its potential to reshape our digital landscape.

I've gained a deep appreciation for the complexities of blockchain systems, the importance of robust cryptography, and the innovative potential of platforms like Polkadot. More importantly, I've become part of a global network of blockchain enthusiasts and professionals, connections that I'm sure will prove invaluable in the future.

 Looking Ahead

The PBA may be over, but this is just the beginning of my blockchain journey. Armed with new knowledge, skills, and a network of like-minded individuals, I'm excited to apply what I've learned in real-world scenarios. Whether it's contributing to blockchain projects, exploring entrepreneurial opportunities, or simply being a more informed participant in the crypto space, I feel well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

To anyone considering the Polkadot Blockchain Academy: if you have a passion for blockchain technology and are ready for an intense but incredibly rewarding experience, don't hesitate. It's more than just an educational program - it's a transformative journey that will shape your understanding of the blockchain landscape and potentially your future career path.

As I sign off, I'm grateful for this experience, for the friendships formed, and for the doors that have been opened. The world of blockchain is evolving rapidly, and thanks to the PBA, I feel ready to evolve with it.

From Solidity to Rust: A Beginner's Blockchain Story

At 19, I'm a student driven by curiosity. My journey into the world of Web3 began at the ETH Dublin conference, sparking a passion that led me down a fascinating rabbit hole of blockchain technology.
My initial exploration involved diving deep into Ethereum-based technologies. I spent six to seven months familiarizing myself with Solidity smart contracts, general blockchain concepts, and EVM-based fundamentals. During this time, I built mini-projects such as NFT ticketing apps and marketplaces, using React for the frontend and Solidity with ethers.js for blockchain integration.
A pivotal moment came when I met a Polkadot fellow at the conference. This chance encounter not only resulted in a great friendship but also guided me towards coding in Solidity and, eventually, to set my sights on the Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA) as my gateway into the Web3 space.
Feeling comfortable with my Ethereum-based tech stack, I decided to take on a new challenge: Rust. Known for its developer-friendly nature and steep learning curve, Rust pushed me out of my comfort zone as a TypeScript developer. I immersed myself in the Rust book, meticulously working through examples to understand the language's intricacies. To reinforce my learning, I regularly tackled exercises like Rustlings and recreated basic command-line utilities in Rust.
In April, when the PBA applications opened, I felt ready to test my skills. The qualifier exam allowed me to apply my Rust knowledge, and I completed all questions with confidence. Two weeks later, I received the exciting news that I had cleared the Rust exam and was invited for an interview – the final stage of entry into the program.
The interview with a PBA talent acquisition member was an opportunity to share my Web3 journey and express how I viewed the academy as a means to innovate and develop in the ecosystem. The anticipation following the interview was intense, as I knew it could make or break my chance at this opportunity.
About a week later, I received the email I had been hoping for. As soon as I saw the words "welcome to the Singapore cohort," I knew my hard work had paid off. This confirmation email not only validated my efforts but also crystallized my vision for the future.
As I embark on this new chapter with the Polkadot Blockchain Academy, I'm excited to deepen my knowledge, contribute to the ecosystem, and continue my growth in the exciting world of Web3.
