CSS Eggs: Duck Eggs Woo-oo!

For the past few years I've made CSS Easter eggs. See my CSS Tips Series, links below, for previous eggs. The eggs have changed from simple shape to more 3d looking in recent years.

These first sections are copied straight from the previous article all I'm doing this time is changing some color, the structure is the same. So you can Skip to New Colors

Basic Egg

The basic egg class is an oval shape. It will be modified, each egg will have it's own class with a different gradient. In this image the oval has a slightly larger border for better visibility. Subsequent borders are small and the color changed to blend into the background.

Make it look real

Next a egg_white class with a linear-gradient is added to give the egg a more realistic look. The classes were named egg_color rather than color_egg to make the file easier to find.
The gradient is made of several white and off white hues.

The filter: drop-shadow places a shadow behind the oval. This helps separate it from the background. While the box-shadow: inset puts the shadow inside the oval. Together they give the egg depth.

New Colors

This time I used the same HTML as last year. Just the CSS. mostly the background colors was changed. A couple time the border was modified or removed.

Duck Eggs Woo-oo!

This egg was based off of Mallard duck eggs which are yellow. Various shades of yellow were used. The dev tools color picker was used to pull colors from images of mallard eggs. But the egg just looked very pale. Therefore used creative license to make a yellow egg.

This is a Robin's egg. This time the color picker was able to get some decent blue hues from online images of Robin eggs.

This egg is the reverse gradient of the overall background. The to-top parameter was used to change the direction of the gradient.

This is a big green egg.

Ducktales Woo-oo two

While editing the post, I decided why not try to make the stars of Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck. Here 50% was added to both colors in the gradient to make a hard stop and clear cut color change.

Three eggs are the same size. The last is larger. To make eggs sit on the ground align-items was changed from center to baseline.

Wrap up

I enjoyed coloring the eggs. While writing this post, I thought about making all the eggs of different duck species. But many ducks eggs are white and whites eggs were done last year. After the post was almost done, I made some CSS edits to make animated ducks.

Spring Break is over but now the temp has dropped back to the 30s. There are even some flurries. Tennessee false spring. Or as so called it wrong coat season. Cause what ever coat you grab in the morning will be the wrong one at the end of the day.

It's Spring Break here. In the US we just moved our clocks ahead. We lost an hour and will lose more hours discussing whether or not we should drop day light savings.

I was sick the last part of the week. I don't know what it was but Thursday was a stay in bed day. Friday I could be social but had little battery.

9 Years on DEV.

Today I hit 9 years in the DEV community. I joined with the intention of blogging as I learned. But for a long time I just lurked. It wasn't until Covid that I actually blogged at a regular pace.

I'm celebrating by catching a cold. Today has been rough.

What Have I done in that time?

Run a weekly Goals series that's been running 3.5 years. Need some accountability? Drop by on Monday and tell us your plans for the week. Then come back Friday and say how you did.
CSS Art * A series of geeky themed images created with code. I've not done any in a while need to restart.
Made the Top 7 Featured posts twice.
Earned top CSS and top JavaScript Badges.
Help Moderate posts and up vote great DEV content.
Entered many of the DEV Challenges. And was a Co-winner in a CSS Art challenge. (link below)
Wrote a blog post for Virtual Coffee Community announcing our 2024 Blogging Challenge.
Followers aren't public here. It's one of the things I like about DEV. What's more important is active followers, the ones that respond to your writing.

This was made with CSS and HTML for a Frontend Challenge.

June 2025 Was a winner in the Jun 2025 Frontend challenge for CSS art.

What's Next?

I don't know. The rash of AI slop articles is making it harder to enjoy the site. Some writers may use AI as a brain storming tool to get started. But there's stuff that's clearly just not altered and is copy pasted as whatever the AI spit out.

This hurts the community. Just make it harder to find blogs with a personal touch.

I'm going to restart my personal challenge to blog more each month than the same time last year.
