The character limit made this challenge really hard....I can easily just write ‘Invalid name, please try again’ but no one wants their name to be called invalid…..you’re basically calling the user invalid! There was no space for empathy or a kind way to tell them their name was considered invalid…by a machine.

I wasn’t sure if the app has the fuel level information or not, if it does then the ‘take break’ button should be ‘check fuel’ instead. However, I assumed the fuel level was on the truck dashboard - so user would get the notification reminding them to check their fuel, they would look at their dashboard and determine whether to continue or not.
Now thinking about it, ‘Take break’ doesn’t really work because it’s not like the truck driver can just stop straight away.

So as 2nd iteration, I would prob just put a single button either ‘check remaining deliveries’ or ‘check fuel’

When an app suddenly doesn’t work, as a user, it is normal to feel annoyed and frustrated. So I wanted to avoid mentioning anything in the message that would lead the user into thinking it was their fault like ‘check your connection’.

I found with a lot of these writign challenges, I had the most trouble staying within the character limit. I understand there are there because of the limited space where the message would be displayed, but they left very little room for a more human one.

Honestly, I'm not sure why this site requires a name in order to reveal the content...just the post code should be enough.
If I was a user I would question it, and I really couldn't think of a good explanation to why a name would be required especially with such a short character limit

I feel this is more the job of a copywriter than a UX writer.

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 + 7

One of those messages where I made sure it contains all the information the user would be interested in and then give them an option to choose what to do. In reality the 2 links will go to the same page...but just different parts of the page.

I kept this one short and direct, but feel it might be lacking a little in empathy.

Daily UX Writing Challenge Day 6 + 7

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5

I didn’t like this challenge….
I’m confused about the context...the scenario is that the user has already gotten into the car and is driving. Why would the message only appear after they plug in their phone and are already driving (I don’t have a car so I’m not aware if cars have a feature that alerts users of local news when plugged in)? Did the fire take place at that exact timing? I would like the message to alert the user the moment news of the fire is discovered. Also what's with the definite danger if fire gets close? Is the fire spreading towards her? Roads are closed so how would the user even get near enough to be in danger?
To complete the challenge I assumed the fire started not long after the user started driving and that the user has a news app of some sort with push notifications which will wake up her screen and display the message.

I made so many assumptions in this challenge - something you are not supposed to do as a UX designer >_<

Another sports one, I assumed it was football and used the 2 names I know as an example for the message.

Daily UX Writing Challenge Day 5

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

For this one, I made a few assumptions. 1, the app has an auto save function (if it doesn't then that's bad UX - autosave should be built into everything with the ability to turn it off). 2, that the app detected it as crashing when the phone turned off.

To help relieve the 'fear of loss' feeling the user might be feeling, I went for a short direct message to the user explaining what happened and letting them know that they can recover their work easily.

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Had a bit of trouble with this one as I wasn't too sure what the tone of voice should be, I might redo this one after a bit of research but got a 15hr shift at work tomorrow so I need to get to sleep.

How I came up with my solution:
Made the header short and clear - straight to the point without revealing the flat fee so that when the user reads it they will want to find out more.
The body I emphasized on the delivery fee being a flat rate twice since the scenario mentions the user being a person who went on the app to check for sales, so they are someone who's sensitive to price.
Finally, the CTAs. I learnt that one way to make a user click on what you want is to give them a single option but make it seem like it's a choice (I feel like this is copywriting territory). You either choose the promo or never see it again.
Thinking about it now I feel 'No, Thank you' might be better…

Day 1 | Day 2

I managed to lose my phone on the bus today after work, luckily a kind homeless man picked it up for me, but trying to locate him to get it back was a struggle. Luckily after almost 3 hrs in the cold I managed to get my phone back~ So I was planning to just go to sleep and skip the challenge for the day. Unfortunately my brain was like 'it's only the 3rd day and you failed the streak already?!' So here I am.

Thankfully it was a nice short one today and didn't require much
thinking. Initially I wasn't sure what tone of voice I should use as I have no idea what the company is and made a slighter longer message with a friendly tone then noticed the character limit which didn't leave me with any options other than a super, short, clear concise message.

Day 1

The challenge this time was on a topic I had no interest in and knew very little about. However, e-sports is something I do know about so I based the promo text on that. I would of loved to have an app that notified me of every VCT game with updates on the scores and highlights!

I used to have League of Legends and Valorant championship games in the background at work while creating desserts.

Daily UX Writing Challenge Day 1

I signed up for the Daily UX writing Challenge on https://dailyuxwriting.com/

I should be posting my solutions on their facebook, but since I dont have facebook I'm posting them here.

Day 1 challenge:

How I came up with my solution:
Firstly, the heading should be clear and concise at conveying the message to the user explaining to them what the problem is.
The body text helps give the user a solution to their problem. By letting them know that the next flight is scheduled it takes the biggest worry away from the user. Lastly, providing lounge access/food vouchers will indirectly guide the user to either eat or rest instead of hanging around the customer service area.

The hardest part of this challenge was the character restriction forcing me to be clear and concise with my words but also having to be empathetic to the user. I also understand that the solution is something that not all airlines are able to provide (and can cause overcrowding in the lounge) but as we all know, when a flight is cancelled there's really not much the airline is able to do so some sort of compensation is better than nothing.

My Coding Journey

A full circle.

Around 15 years ago one of my hobbies was to create static websites and designing layouts for both web and Livejournal (does anyone still use it?) . The layouts themselves used to be made using Photoshop, then coded using Notepad (I thought I was super fancy when upgrading to Notepad++). However all of this was just a hobby at the time and I didnt even know I could make a living making websites. I ended up taking up baking and just decided I'm going to be a pastry chef.
Being part of an Asian family, not going to uni was not an option so I chose to study Computer Science at King's College London. Unfortunately, I was extremely immature and thought of it as a waste of time when I could be working in a kitchen. My memory is a bit blurred regarding my time at uni, but somehow I was given permission to redraw 1 term before completing my degree. Needless to say a few years later this became one of my biggest regrets till this day.

My career as a pastry chef was pretty smooth, I was good at what I did and never had trouble finding a job (if only it was the same for Web Developer jobs). When I started my career I would change jobs often in order to learn something new from each place I went. At some point, I stopped changing jobs and stayed at my current company. I was comfortable with my career and where I am in life, or so I thought. It took me far too long to realise that I was just floating and was no longer trying to be better or wanting to learn new things.

I started to learn coding in my spare time. I tried to learn Japanese, playing the piano, video editing and photography in the past but nothing stuck and I gave up easily. I thought the same would happen with coding, to my surprise the opposite happened. There was just so much to learn, I wanted to know everything. I started with learning Python and Javascript at the same time and struggled hard. It was so different from pastry, I was basically using a whole different part of my brain and after 2 weeks I still only knew the basics and constantly got the 2 languages confused. I expected myself to give up at that point but I didn't. Since it wasn't working out, I decided to follow a web development course to have some structure to my study and was reminded of the past me who enjoyed making websites for fun. All my HTML and CSS knowledge came back to me so I just skimmed through those tutorials and focused on Javascript.

I am very thankful to Trina Yau for inviting me to work on our first hackathon together. It was challenging, but extremely fun - I spent around 10 hrs straight on the first day designing the UI and trying to learn figma at the same time. The saying time flies when you're having fun is cliche but so true.

It was time to move on to the next stage, leaving hospitality and entering the tech world. I started working towards learning more libraries/frameworks and creating my portfolio The decision was a hard one as it meant starting from the bottom again after being at the top and all the 'sorry we will not be considering you for this role' email really makes me question my life choices. Well, what did I expect? It's only been 3 months.

I won't give up.

My new life as a Web Developer has only just begun and there's so much I still need to learn. This being a dilemma of mine right now, I’m the type that likes to know everything straight away. Everyday in my head it's just What should I learn next? Vue because it's popular? Oh wait, lots of places are asking for Angular so maybe learn that instead, actually no, need to learn Typescript and SASS first. Ah but what about testing, can't forget testing etc. So yeah, my brain is just spinning constantly trying to figure out what I want to do next. In the end I decided it was important to learn Typescript first due to the high demand for it and I will be able to use it in my current project.

I am also doing a course on UI/UX design since the design and user experience is a huge part of why I want to be a Frontend Developer. Also being able to understand a design, reasons for certain component and function etc is extremely important.

Thank You so much for reading. I would love to hear about your coding journey as well, so please share with me
