Understanding EC2 Instance Storage 📦

When launching EC2 instances, it's important to understand different storage options:

🔹 Block Storage vs Object Storage:
👉 Object Storage (S3): Best for large volumes of unstructured data (e.g., images, backups).
👉 Block Storage (EBS, EC2 Instance Store): Best for transactional data and frequently accessed small files.

🔹 File Storage:
👉 EFS (Elastic File System): AWS-managed network file system, scalable across instances.

🔹 Elastic Block Store (EBS) Highlights:
👉 Acts like a network-attached USB drive — uses network communication, so slight latency exists.
👉 Attach/Detach anytime — can be attached or detached from running EC2 instances.
👉 Persistent Data — survives even after the EC2 instance is terminated.
👉 Multiple Volumes: One EC2 instance can have multiple EBS volumes attached.
👉 AZ Bound:
👉 👉 EBS volumes are tied to an Availability Zone (AZ).
👉 👉 You can't attach an EBS created in us-east-1a to an instance in us-east-2a.
👉 👉 Use Snapshots to migrate across AZs.

🔹 Important Behavior:
👉 Root EBS Volume: Created with EC2 by default; has "Delete on Termination" = true (can be disabled).
👉 Additional EBS Volumes: Created manually; default "Delete on Termination" = false.
👉 Billing: Charged for provisioned storage (GBs, IOPS).

📚 If you're preparing for AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, feel free to use my notes here Notes

Internet Connection at your home vs data in VPC (Simplified)

👉 EC2 Instances = Devices in your home (like your phone/laptop)
👉 NACLs = Firewalls that control who/what gets in or out
👉 Route Table = Traffic director – decides where packets go
👉 Internet Gateway (IGW) = Modem that connects your home to the internet

1️⃣ These EC2 Instances resemble devices in our home N/W
NACLs resemble firewalls; they are also called virtual firewalls
2️⃣ We have to allow for any traffic to communicate through our NACLs
3️⃣ If traffic is allowed in NACL, it is passed to our Route Table, which determines where to send the traffic, locally or to the internet
4️⃣ If that is to be sent off to the internet, traffic is sent to the Internet Gateway, which resembles a Modem
5️⃣ Internet Gateway would then send the traffic off to the internet
6️⃣ Then the website you have visited will send a response, which again passes from the Internet Gateway and from there to the Route Table.
7️⃣ The Route Table decides how to send that response traffic back to our EC2 Instances.
8️⃣ Then, the response traffic reaches NACL, which would decide whether to block/allow this
9️⃣ NACL would then allow traffic to one of the subnets, where at last, the EC2 Instance receives that.

📚 If you're preparing for AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, feel free to use my notes here Notes

In these tough times, why not just upskill yourself a bit why learning some skills like Docker, Kubernetes, Java, AWS, and what not? Today we are going to review some of the courses regarding Docker and Kubernetes:

Docker and Kubernetes - The Complete Guide

About this Course:
This is the ultimate course to learn how to deploy any web application you can possibly dream up. Docker and Kubernetes are the newest tech in the Dev Ops world, and have dramatically changed the flow of creating and deploying web apps. Docker is a technology that allows applications to run in constructs called 'containers', while Kubernetes allows for many different 'containers' to run in coordination.

Docker from Scratch!
In this course you'll learn Docker from absolute fundamentals, beginning by learning the answer to basic questions such as "What is a container?" and "How does a container work?". From the very first few lectures, we will do a deep dive on the inner workings of containers, so you get a core understanding of exactly how they are implemented. Once you understand what a container is, you'll learn how to work with them using basic Docker CLI commands. After that, you'll apply your new-found mastery of the Docker CLI to build your own custom images, effectively 'Dockerizing' your own personal applications.

Multi-Container Deployments on AWS!
After building a deployment pipeline, you'll apply it to master both single-container and multi-container deployments on Amazon Web Services. You will construct a multi-container application utilizing Node, React, Redis, and Postgres, and see the amazing power of containers in action (Note: all Javascript coding in this course is optional, the full source code is provided if you don't want to write JS).

Kubernetes!
Finally, you will tackle Kubernetes, a production-grade system for managing complex applications with many different running containers. You will learn the right way to build a Kubernetes Cluster - this course doesn't have any of those annoying "don't do this in production" comments! You will first build a Kubernetes Cluster on your local machine, then eventually move it over to a cloud provider. You'll even learn how to set up HTTPS on Kubernetes, which is harder than it sounds!

Stats:
Students: 119784
Languages: English
Captions: Yes
Lectures: 310
Video: 22 total hours
Rating: 4.6
