08 Mistakes to avoid As a Programmer

Hello to all my community people :-) This is my 6th post and I'm thankful to everyone because I love this community. And special thanks to all my 550+ followers. I'll try to provide valuable post every week...❤️😃

1. Trying too many things at once

As a programmer, often you're planning to solve many tasks at once while doing programming.

It's good that you have a todo list that what next you want to do in code but doing altogether can backfire you.

Take one step at a time and try to get it done and then move on.

2. Don't have proper planning

I'm still using the "pen and paper" technique to think about what I've to do in this function or block. Throw your ideas on paper.

To make your planning more effective, you can use the tool like "NOTION" to plan everything.

Always track your progress against the goals you've set in your plan like sleep/study time /exercise, etc. Make adjustments as you go. Avoid "Too much planning also"

3. Not using community support

Don't hesitate for taking help from anyone whether it's online and offline.

Try to remove one thing from your mind that "someone is judging you" because everyone has been in your shoes before.

Always remember "Stack overflow and google are your best friend".

4. Not documenting your code

We have to document everything in a job so that everyone can remain on the same page and also you can't forget when you see it even after a month.

So, why not we can try to build this habit from college days or even school. Always think that you're writing this code for your company.

Try to avoid "I". Try to accept "We".

5. Doubting yourself or comparing yourself: can I do it?

We have to understand that programming is not an easy thing.

It needs your time and practice. So don't compare yourself with someone who's doing great in this field. But you can take inspiration from that person so that you learn a few things from them.

Remember always "Failure is the first step to success"

6. Fix later attitude and I know all attitude

Whenever you encounter any bug in your code/project and you've tired a lot and you want to take a break to fix it.

Just maintain a todo list like "NOT TO FORGET ERROR CORRECTION" otherwise you'll forget about it.

Bonus Tip: Try to maintain one error doc so that you can refer it whenever you encountered that error again.

7. Not taking backup of your work

Never forget this step. Suppose, you're making something and your system gets fail then what's next??

So always make your work safe by taking backups with the help things like Dropbox and my favorite "GitHub"

8. Not taking regular breaks

I follow "The Pomodoro Technique" i.e an effective time management technique that helps you to remain productive while taking regular breaks. "Try to read it".

It helped me a lot and still helping me and avoid this attitude like "You've to do everything in one shot"

Master 404 Error Page Designing/Development #12hacks

I'm going to share the complete hacks regarding designing 404 page but before that understand why it's happening and what are the consequences we have to face due to this. After understanding this as a developer we can design the best 404 pages with better user experience.

Real-Life Scenario

When you are at an unknown place, and you get lost there, and neither you have the map. Now, you start getting frustrated.

And at the time if someone helps you to find your path. That's feeling is great, agree?

404 Error Page is similar to real-life problems and you just have to deal it the same way as other problems.

You can take 404 Page as an opportunity to make as welcoming, as engaging as possible to offer a variety of solutions to reduce customer frustration and let them stay on the site/app much longer.

Default 404 Error Page

If you don't take 404 Page seriously, not giving that much importance as another page then you have to face consequences.

Bad News

As research concluded, 74% of customers leave the site after they face a 404-error page.

Good News

Only 23% of visitors that encounter a 404 page make a second attempt to find the missing page.

Understanding of Error

To create a best 404 page, you have to understand:

The type of 404 error
Who causes this error?

Type of 404 Error

Error 404 | HTTP 404
404 File Not Found
The page cannot be found
The requested URL not found on this server
HTTP 404 Not Found | 404 Page Not Found

Who causes this error?

Either it's come from the user side or it's from the website side. Right?

If the error is from the user side then they typed the link incorrectly. You can't control what person type into their keyboard.

Simple Categorization of Error

Simple we can categorize 404 Errors in 3 Simple Parts:

Page is deleted
User Type wrong URL
The link does not exist now

But we have to understand that "`Mistakes are a part of our lives`"

Now, after understanding what's 404 is all about. Start designing it with proper hacks.

Hack 1: Maintaining brand consistency

Always maintain consistency with your fonts, themes, logo, header, footer like other pages. So, that you'll find this
a page similar to others.

Hack 2: Provide Navigation

Provide navigation on the 404 page so that users can navigate from that page to another page while remaining on your site.

Hack 3: Provide Search box

By providing a search box, you can easily navigate from the 404 page to any other page. It'll give the opportunity to the user to type.

Hack 4: Showing emotions

You can provide emotions to your 404-page design so that it'll look more original and realistic like "oops", "Ohh", "Awhhk", "Hmmm". Here your main goal is to target people's emotions.

Hack 5: Be Apologetic

The more important part of designing a 404 page always shows an apology, even if it's user fault. The main goal of apology is that you are showing your user that you really value them.

Hack 6: Keep your error message simple

Don't' show scary text and image here. Always provide a simple and clear message to your user. "Minimalism is best for any design". Plain language helps every user to understand why they are getting this 404 error page.

Hack 7: Add useful links only

Add a popular page of your website or any other important links on your 404 Page. Don't try to overload your 404 Page with too many links.

Hack 8: Give Homepage Link [CTA]

Adding the home page button is important to add to your 404 page so that users come back to the main page because they are lost. So, you've to guide them and bring them back.

Hack 9: Add a bit of fun by adding Image | Animation | Illustration

You can use illustration/images/illustration, images related to your theme or product by combining 404 in mind.

Hack 10: Show Popular Posts
Adding a popular page on your 404 page provide varieties to the users to maintain their interest.

Hack 11: Use of interactivity

Providing interactivity like adding games, quizzes, drawing, etc so that users can interact with your 404 page and don't feel bore while seeing it.

Hack 12: Show matching results

This trick is also helpful as if your user did a mistake by typing ountain then you can show other results matching with the term that the user wrote. It'll also give varieties to users to explore.

It doesn't mean include all these elements on one page. The designer can make the decision base upon the requirement/priority."

404 Error Page Design : Don'ts Checklist

1. Not treating the same way as other website pages.
2. Blaming users that it's their mistake.
3. Not giving enough information about the error.
4. Not telling how to recover from the error.
5. Overloading the page with many links
6. Using the server's language for telling errors not user's language

Master The Website Requirements Before Developing

Before developing a website, as a designer, developer, or any agency we must have to know what are the requirements before developing a website...

1. Define your target & purpose

The defining target and purpose of the website is the initial step and we must have to know before doing anything.

Define your target audience along with the purpose of the website.
In order to create your website that meets the needs of the target audience, you have to define first: Who are those people? Why you’re making this website? What would you like to get out of it?

And if you failed to define it, then you'll design a website that will be aimless and useless.

2. Give a name to your website

Buy a Domain Name for your website: This is the second thing that you need after defining your target audience and purpose.
Ex www.anydomainname.com
It’s a website address that people will use to get connected to your website.

3. Get a place for your website

Website Hosting: It’s a storage that stores your website content online.
When users enter your website domain in a browser then the content will fetch from your host through the browser.
Types of Hosting: a. Shared Hosting b. VPS Hosting c. Dedicated Hosting d. Free Hosting

4. Create your Brand

Your website needs to reflect your brand.
Branding is important for all types of business and using a Logo is a great way to create a brand for your business as well as for the website. like:- TYPOGRAPHY, LOGO, COLORS, LOGO.
The colors, fonts & style should remain the same throughout as too many fonts & colors make your site & brand feel messy.

5. Understanding of your content

You must have a proper understanding of the content that is going to appear on your website, this includes text(typography) as well as images.

6. Decide your color schemes

Proper use of color Palette is important as “Color” plays a big role in how a user feels and how your brand stands out from the crowd.

7. Knowledge of Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a tool with the help of it you can understand no of visitors interacting with your website, which page they visit most, how long they stay on each page and etc

8. Understanding of CTA

It’s important to have a call to action that appears on your website as it can include any kind of interaction with your websites like getting people to contact you by phone, email, through login/signup or etc.

9. Knowledge of Other Factors

Cost of running Website
SEO Friendly(understanding of keywords)
Take Inspiration before development(from competitors or from your favorite brands)
Structure(blueprint) your website
Select proper tools that you’ll use to develop and design

If you want to learn javascript by building games, then this channel is for you with soo many games. I love this channel and I learned a lot from this channel while building projects. Condition*: Be familiar with JS first with few projects then it's easy for you to understand these games.

Master your next Freelance Project

Now, let's start our today's topic

After learning programming or designing, you've to start taking freelance projects but what to do after you'll get freelance project..? I'm going to share the framework `Analysis Phase Framework` that I'm using over the years to get more clarity about the project and client's mind and that will help you to make a better freelance project.

The questionnaire is a more important task for your client to understand their project requirement more clearly before starting out any project.

I've divided this framework into 6 parts:

Phase 1: Business Analysis

In this phase you've to understand about company and what exactly the client wants from you by asking the following questions:

company name:_________ Address:__________
Phone:________ Email:_________

Question 1: Describe your business in few sentences?
Question 2: Who is your target customer/audience?
Question 3: What makes your company remarkable? Ex: Being the cheapest, having awesome customer service, fast or free delivery, guarantee or return policy, etc?

Phase 2: Website Analysis

This phase is to understand the pain points, goals of the clients like:

Question 1: What do you like about your previous branding/website?
Question 2: What do you dislike about your previous branding/website?
Question 3: What are your expectations for the new website?
Question 4: What's your primary goal for the site? Like: Increase brand awareness, encourage sales, Educate their audience, etc.

Phase 3: Competitive Analysis

This phase is to understand the about the competitors of your client:
Question 1: Who are your competitors that are providing the same services?
Question 2: What are some sites that you like the style of, features, and functionality of?
Question 3: What do you currently like about your competitors’ website?

Phase 4: Branding Analysis

This phase is to understand the branding guidelines of the client company:
Question 1: Do you have any specific color and typography palette that need to be used in your project?
Question 2: Do you have imagery (photos, video, or illustrations) that will be part of the design?
Question 3: Do you have any logo for this project? If you have then can you provide me with the artwork files or you want a new logo?
Question 4: Do you have a tagline and a mission statement? Question 5: Apart from website designing, what are the other things you want like e-catalog, etc? If no then say NA.

Phase 5: Functionality Analysis

This phase is to understand the particular functionality that clients want in the website or app or product like:
Question 1: Will you require a responsive design (adapts automatically to mobile devices)?
Question 2: What functional requirements are needed within the new website? Like: Photo Galleries, Words by previous customers, Contact form, chatting, etc.
Question 3: Will you want a single page website/Single landing page or multiple page website?

Phase 6: Budget and Timeline Analysis

We all are doing hard work to get money. So we have to understand the timeline and budget of client before saying yes:
Question 1: What's your expected timeline for this project?
Question 2: What's your budget for this project?

Now you are ready to handle any client's project and you're ready to start designing or development.
