What’s new in Boost Note in April: Speed Improvement, UI/UX Renewal, Fuzzy Search, and more.

We have improved the app a lot and recently, we renewed the entire UI to provide IDE-like UX and make it more developer-friendly.

Here are the major updates this month:

(1) Speed Improvement

Since we do care about users’ feedback and got a lot of feedback related to its speed, we made it about 1.3x faster* than before.

Please note that there may be a difference in speed improvement depending on the document amount in your workspace and the internet situation.

From now on, the app will cache documents that have been loaded once, and when you open the same document next time, you can edit it from the cached one without waiting for sync with the real-time server. Also, we optimized data fetching for the document a bit too.

For the next speed improvement, we will polish the data structure for the page loading to reduce the data transmission time required for initial rendering to less than 500ms, regardless of the amount of documents in your workspace.

(2) UI/UX Renewal

We’ve been focusing on improving the quality of the app experience since the last newsletter. The new UI is like an IDE, such as VSCode and WebStorm, which is very familiar for developers.

This new UI will boost the team’s productivity and not sacrifice their time to get used to the tool.

(3) Fuzzy Search

A fuzzy search like VSCode has been rolled out! Hit cmd/ctrl+P and get started.
Updates (2) and (3) should work without updating if you are using the cloud version, but If you are also using the desktop app, you may need to update the version to v0.16.0 or more (It doesn’t work under v0.16.0.)

We are planning to release another feature called “Document Property” with excellent filtering. This feature allows you to organize documents more flexibly and more intelligently, and you can find documents quickly by using filters.

How to enable set the Boost Hub integrations.

Wiki tools = Leaky bucket

The problem of existing wiki tools is that only the decision ("What") is summarized. We never know the process ("Why") behind that decision.

"Why" is the most important internal knowledge because it is the part that includes the knowledge, experience and wisdom of your past and present teammates (and you!). Other wiki tools don't provide a workflow that brings the process of decision-making together.

Solving this situation is the biggest motivation for today's update - 2,000+ integrations and stepping towards empowering you to summarize the processes ("Why") of the decision making ("What") automatically.

Gather the internal knowledge that has been scattered in various places or spilled out in the middle of a discussion, then build a workflow so that an individual's knowledge becomes the team's knowledge.

We've released v0.7.0 with File System based storage support on July 1st.

AutoSync

Now the app can sync automatically after 30 secs from last editing and keep syncing every an hour. Also you can opt out if you don’t need it. Further configuration options will be available from next update.

The previous build was automatically fetching all storage after signing in and removing data in local after signing out. The problem is that, if user signed out from the app without syncing, unsynced data will be lost.

From this build, the app will handle local storage and cloud storage completely separately. So if you delete cloud storage, the app still keep storage data in local storage.

This is quite useful when a user discards their cloud storage accidentally or our cloud storage lost all of data(I don’t think it could happen though.). Even if the bad thing happens, you can revive your cloud storage from the local data in your app(or browser).

Also you can convert local storage into cloud storage easily. So this will change UX of creating and removing storage.

Since we launched the first version of Boost Note in 3 years ago, there have been both ups and downs.

The greatest of these ups is that we gained more than 600k of beloved Boost Note users; and as an open source project, we’re creating Boost Note together with every single of you from all over the world.

I can’t thank those who have contributed to Boost Note enough, we are really grateful for this.
At the end of this post, I will introduce almost 100 people who contributed recently.

The major down happened right after we released the first version of Boost Note, when all the members left and I was the only one remaining on the team.

Although it was really a hard time for me, many contributors helped Boost Note and me. Boost Note could never come this far without your support. I will never ever forget what you all did.

This experience has strongly bonded us to our corporate mission. Our mission is ‘to empower creators by realizing the standards of tomorrow’.

Lately, you have been hearing that technology replaces more and more jobs.
I think the programmer will be the protagonist in this new era, so we believe you are the most important creators.

I would like to empower even more all the talented developers out there, like our helpful Boost Note contributors, and make this world a better place together.

Why did you renew it now?

Hi! I 'm KZ from the Boost Note development team.

Today, the beta version of the renewed version of Boost Note, a markdown editor for developers, has been launched!

Boost Note has been used by 600k+ developers since its release and has grown with the help of the open-source community.

We received so much feedback via GitHub issues and Twitter. There was always doubt in our minds, and a question always kept popping up: "How much company resources should be devoted to Boost Note".

We also operated IssueHunt, an open-source developer support service. For this reason, Boost Note was updated by the community.
We deeply thank the people who enthusiastically submitted contributions and feature requests as well as those who helped us update Boost Note.

We have been worried for a long time. We have decided to start a Boost Note renewal project to deliver the services users really need.
I'm really happy to announce the beta release today. We will continue to develop and improve in the future.
The renewal version is also available as open-source, so I hope that everyone continue to contribute and make it into the tool that you hope for!

This is because we anticipate releasing products of Boost series.

How to migrate data from old-Boostnote

First of all, thank you to all the users who have used Boost Note for a long time! Thank you for waiting.

You will need to manually transfer data from the old-Boostnote to the new-Boost Note (Just a few seconds!).

Please take the following steps.

From your PC, open the folder containing the old Boostnote data
Select .cson files
Open Preferences → Import at new Boost Note and upload files by drag and drop (complete!)

Behind the scenes

We are always thankful that you let us support your note-taking with Boost Note. And some of you even contribute to improving the app with your development skills!

To show our appreciation, we decided to take the Boost Note to the next level. Today, we are pleased to announce that we will release the new Boost Note in January 2020. It's much-improved UI, and this time, you will see the mobile app for iOS and Android too!

We will keep the pros of the current one, and it's still open-source. But we are planning to provide what the community has been waiting for for a long time. This change will make your note-taking a lot easier and more convenient. We believe this is an exciting change for the Boost Note users!

The reason why we started IssueHunt Fest

Initially, we made IssueHunt as a tool to maintain OSS called Boostnote.

Even though the majority of Boostnote’s development was community-based we didn’t have a way to reward our developers.
After discussing this issue with our team, be built IssueHunt as a way to show our appreciation to our developers maintaining Boostenote.

We’ve received hundreds of pull request in just a week after launching the Boostnote bounty program (an article of Boostnote bounty).

We thought this program we made might help build a sustainable open-source ecosystem, so we decided to spin it off as IssueHunt, a bounty platform for OSS.
