I made a site that asked the question: “What if twitter was made in the early 90's?” The result was char.social. Char is a text only micro-blogging site, hence the name “char” (short for character).

Some basics about the site:

Text only. Not even links to external sites. If you want to show something use ASCII art (full unicode support).
No notifications. I believe notifications on sites like Twitter, Instagram, reddit, etc… have become maliciously designed to increase app time.
No algorithms. Posts can be sorted chronologically or by most likes. I do not want char to become another source of rage bait and doom scrolling.
No email or personal info for sign up. I do not want your email or personal info.
We do not harvest any user data.
Lightweight web app only.
Posts are not deleted unless we are legally compelled.
char.social is just for fun. Nothing there should be taken seriously.
