Dev as a Hobby?

Hey y’all. Little bit of a RANDOM topic/thing I’m pondering for y’all. I have enough skills that I’m getting bored with tutorials quickly. However, I don’t have enough interest to commit to any kind of project any length of time. Dev is kinda in a hobby slot for me right now, and I have time to put towards it. However, I’ve had trouble doing just that. I can’t lose interest in dev either though, I’m very curious how things work, how things are built, I spend time thinking of things I might want to put my time towards in the dev space. I just haven’t found something as a hobby in the dev world to consistently put my time towards.

Introducing The Dev Report

I started a new podcast for Devs: The Dev Report. I want to discuss the pros, the cons, and the trash talk. I've recently started a non-dev role(which I love). However, I miss dev, and I want to talk about it.

I've been wanting to do a podcast for devs for a while, and I finally pulled it all together.

The first episode is ready for you.
The Dev Report
Hope y’all like it! :)

Write With Me (Day 8)

Welcome to the 8th day of the Write With Me challenge. Earlier last week I asked the Dev.to community if they could give me the best tools tips and guides for Elixir, and it did not disappoint.

Article No Longer Available

There were a lot of solid resources. Now I have a lot of work to do, and I have no excuses to not learn Elixir. I spend most of my time at DailyDrip maintaining our newsletter, but it has been so great to have support from my work and the dev community to try and learn Elixir.

Today, I needed to lowercase all the letters I had in a sentence. Typiclly I have a site that I go to that I just dump in the paragraph I need lowercased, and push a button, and voilà.

However, today was different. My gut was to accomplish the small task in an iex session.

So, I popped open iex.

λ iex
Interactive Elixir (1.6.6) - press Ctrl+C to exit (type h() ENTER for help)
iex>

Typed in the string I needed to be lowercased and it assigned it to a variable.

iex> words = "These Are Words"
"These Are Words"

Then, I wrongly guessed to call 'String.lowercase', which didn't work.

iex> String.lowercase(words)
** (UndefinedFunctionError) function String.lowercase/1 is undefined or private. Did you mean one of:

      * downcase/1
      * downcase/2

    (elixir) String.lowercase("There Are Words")

But... Wait. Read that error again... It tells you what you probably meant to do. Awesome! Let's try downcase.

iex> String.downcase(words)
"these are words"

It works. Awesome! Thanks iex!

Write With Me (Day 7)

I'm extremely excited that I have 7 posts now in the write with me challenge. The days were not back to back. However, this format has encouraged me to write/journal when I have something on my mind I want to talk about.

I'm diving into Elixir with my free time lately. If you have any videos, books or tutorials you would recommend send them my way! I've been working through Phoenix Web Development, and I've been enjoying it so far.

https://github.com/PacktPublishing/Phoenix-Web-Development

Another thing I'm excited about is my boss made an announcement of a new contest Smooth Terminal is doing. This is the first contest we have held, and the prize is Exploding Rails. This Author has done some work with us before, and is a super cool guy. Checkout Josh's post, on dev.to btw :), for more info.

https://dev.to/knewter/exploding-rails-giveaway-2k9l

New goal is to write as often as possible and make it to at least 100 days by the end of the year.

Write With Me (Day 6)

So, you may have noticed that I have missed a couple days of the writing challenge. However, instead of stopping, I'm going to just keep going. This has been a positive motivation for me. Several others have also reached out to me and said they enjoyed motivation as well. So, as long as I and others are inspired, I'm going to keep writing :)

Today I got to meet with Jess Chen. She is a product designer at Facebook, and she gave me some much-needed inspiration to follow my passion for design.

First, Jess gave me some insight into different types of Design. Specifically the difference between Industrial Design (product design in the hardware space) and Service Design. I won't go into detail about the differences, because at this point I can't give an appropriate intro.

Jess encouraged me to surround myself with other designers. Even if I go to a meetup and ask "Why am I going to these," I will likely hear some conversations that happen to give me insight to the design community. One thing she said really stuck out to me, "It's good to get exposure to the community."

In the past couple of months, I have started to have a big passion for designish type stuff. Thanks Jess for giving me some inspiration today to continue growing in this field.

If you want some inspiration as well check out Jess's website.

Then, take a look at Jess's Instagram.

Jess is a baker, and now I also want to be a baker. Yum

I had decided I wasn't going to write a post today because it is the 4th of July. However, I couldn't help myself. It is very fun to use the writingstreak.io app. Any good habit I can keep going I would like to.

This is a shorter post, but I can proudly say I've written 4 days in a row. Good luck anyone who reads this!!!!!

I hope you all had a great 4th of July. Now let'sget back to work and back to pursuing goals like writing more.

Alright, that is it for tonight. This one was posted a little later, but better late than never eh?

Write With Me (Day 3)

Today is day 3 of the writing daily challenge. I'm proud of myself for doing this three days in a row. Even if I don't write any more this challenge has taken me further than any other challenge I've cast upon myself thus far. If you have thought about doing this challenge with me, go ahead and start!

So, continuing where we left off from yesterday...

Every week our team publishes a dev-focused newsletter with all the coolest stuff going on in the dev world.

The newsletter is split into stories. Below is an example of one of our stories.

Also, here is a link to the newsletter I'm referring to in case you'd like to read it for context.

I could talk about how stuff works and why we pick certain stories, but I'll leave that for another time. Today I just want to talk about what stuck out to me in this weeks news articles, which story was my favorite, and what I learned from these articles.

  1. What stuck out to me.

This week there was a lot of solid news that had some depth that other weeks sometimes don't have. Over half of the articles were long reads, and/or took multiples links for complete uunderstanding/context For example, the Ethereurm-Blockchain size article was a sudo response to an article written 8+ months ago, and to get the full 'heated' feel you basically needed to read the threads on Hacker News and Reddit. Also, both of these articles were super thick. Tons and tons of information. I've read a lot about blockchain technologies, and these articles went the most over my head out of any I've read in the past year. That being said, they are solid and tottally worth the read. What I did pick up made me glad I read and dove into this universe.

  2. Which story was my favorite.

My favorite news story was definitely the Functional Generative Art. Not only was I not aware that Elm can generate SVG images, but I also didn't know there is a way to make my inner artist shine. Xavier Ho in 30 min went from top to bottom on how he set up a robot to make art with Elm. How cool is that? I was always told I would never make it in the Art world, but now I have the inspiration to try this out. Then, I can claim myself as an artist, which I have always wanted to do.

  3. What I learned from these articles.

The Ethereum-Blockchain size is over 1TB, and until recently there was good reason to belive it wasn't going to get this size this quickly.

Google Cloud Platform is still working out some issues.

Flutter is a thing, and it looks really neat.

There is a type of art that I can make. Thanks Xavier Ho for showing us tech people that we can make art too!

I don't know anything about CSS selectors, and I should probably spend some time messing with them. They seem really neat/fun/cool/effiecint/ ran out of adjectives/ but seriously what will make me try these? If it was a JavaScript Framework I would already have a T-Shirt.

Write With Me (Day 2)

This is part of my Write With Me series, where I hope to inspire myself and other to write daily for 7 days. This post is more of a short diary entry, so you've been warned. However, if you are looking for some quick inspiration to motivate yourself to write, read on!

Today is day 2 of my writing extravaganza. On day 1 I gave an intro what my goal was and hoped that others would join me in trying to write daily.

Today is only day 2, and I've already found it hard to think of something to write about. As the day went on I kept thinking about what I could write about and nothing came to mind. Then it hit me. I've already been writing for 3+ hours today, so why not write about that! So, small interview with myself begins... Not really, but I am going to break down what I did today, and what I wrote about today, and what I found interesting.

I help manage the weekly newsletter for DailyDrip.com. We love developer news at DailyDrip, and we find our favorite stories every week and then ship them off to our community with the highlights we took from them, and our takes from the story.

Typically we send out our newsletter on Saturday mornings, but last week I was at the beach so we decided to send one out today instead.

So, now I've met daily writing goal, so I will just call this part 1, and then I might follow up on the rest of this tomorrow.

Starting today, July 1, I'm going to write every day for 5 min. I was inspired to try this by Josh Adam's tweet, which told me about this new app he discovered called writingstreak.io.

Thanks Josh!

My main goal is to write more technical content. The main thing I'm excited about with this tool is getting myself inspired to write daily. With other things going on, it is easy to ignore writing down my thoughts daily or following up on technical blog posts.

Though I may not use this tool exclusively for dev/tech content it will be a great reminder for me to write daily. I'm going to add it to my 'daily' bookmarks bar, so I will see it every day.

I used winingstreak.io for the first time today. I actually ended up using it to write this post. I'm committing to writing a short post every day for next 7 days. This being day 1. I hope you will join me in getting your write on!

Here's a preview of writingstreak.io in action!

I hope this web app can give you a little bit of inspiration to write daily as well. Is it hard for you to write daily? If you have managed a long-term blog before, I'd love to hear how you stayed committed or inspired!

Day 2: Write With Me (Day 2)
