What is Connect 4 ?

Connect Four (also known as Connect 4, Four Up, Plot Four, Find Four, Captain's Mistress, Four in a Row, Drop Four, and in the Soviet Union, Gravitrips) is a game in which the players choose a color and then take turns dropping colored tokens into a six-row, seven-column vertically suspended grid. - Wiki

Gif by Silver Spoon - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link

Hey Bhavesh, What's the motivation to build this game ?

If you’ve ever played Connect 4 (or “Four in a Row”), you know the thrill of lining up four pieces in a row—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally—to claim victory.

Kids at my home playing Connect4 (on left - Aaradhya | on right - Mantra)

In this post, we’ll walk through how to recreate this classic game in Python using Pygame, step-by-step style but without writing any code. 😎

Did i hear, Without Writing Code??? 🤯

YESSSSS !! Without Writing Code!

If you are in, lets go. 🚀
Before going ahead we will need Amazon Q Developer CLI installed in our system.

What is Amazon Q Developer CLI ?

Amazon Q Developer CLI (or Amazon Q CLI) is a command-line tool that integrates Amazon Q, a generative AI-powered assistant, into your terminal environment. It allows you to interact with your development environment and ask questions in natural language, receiving responses and even automating actions through commands.

Head over to this official page to install on your system.

I am waiting.... Please go ahead and install. ⏳️

DONE ?

OK, if it is installed you might see following screen on your terminal when you type:

q chat

Now lets ask about our game plan building Connect for with Pygame.

Pygame is a cross-platform set of Python modules designed for writing video games. It includes computer graphics and sound libraries designed to be used with the Python programming language. - Wiki

For building game I have typed following ( with little bit of prompt engineering..)

hi help me build a connetc4 pyhton game with pygame.
go step by step. add option to play with bot or person.
create a folder name "connect4-pygame" and add a specification file.
in that add what you think will be each step to build this.

Based on our input the Amazon Q CLI has started working... first it created the specification file... as we have asked for.

Creating specification file help maintain scope of work and avoid generating different code than what is expected. consider it like giving blueprint of doing something.

Once Specification file is created, Amazon Q CLI will start working on the implementation.

It will also create the Readme and other files required as per the specification.

Once completed you will see what it task has been completed and how to run the application.

Here is the first version of the application it generated.

The game runs great but, there are few bugs in first version, like:

The difficulty levels was not selectable

There was no button for going back once start playing.

UI was okies and player number was not showing.

So lets fix this now by giving this information to Amazon Q CLI on the same terminal we were chatting.

I typed:

add some navigation option and dificulty selection.
Also make ui morden looking.

After few iteration... here is the final output.

 Gamplay

 Conclusion

In this article, we've seen how Amazon Q CLI can transform the way we approach game development. Without writing a single line of code ourselves, we were able to create a fully functional Connect 4 game with both single-player and multiplayer options.

The power of generative AI tools like Amazon Q CLI lies in their ability to understand our requirements and translate them into working code. With just a few prompts, we went from a concept to a playable game, and then refined it with additional features like difficulty levels and improved UI.

Give it a try yourself - you might be surprised at what you can build with just a conversation!

How do I apply to the AWS Community Builders Program? 📝

Now that you’re excited about the program, let’s dive into the application process. The AWS Community Builders program has an open application window that typically occurs one a year (earlier it was twice a year) and you have to apply within that duration. If you don’t see an open application, you can add your name to the waiting list, which will notify you once the application begins.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying:

Step 1. :: Apply for the program

Go to the → AWS Community Builder Program page and click on apply.

Step 2. :: Prepare Your Application

When applying, you’ll be asked to:

Share Your Contributions: Highlight how you’ve contributed to the AWS community in the past. This could include:

Blog posts you’ve written about AWS topics.

Speaking engagements or webinars you’ve hosted.

Open-source tools or projects you’ve contributed to.

Explain Your Goals: Discuss what you hope to achieve as a Community Builder and how you plan to contribute further.

Choose Your Specialty: AWS offers several categories to focus on, such as:

Cloud Operations

Containers

Data

Dev Tools

Front-End Web & Mobile

Machine Learning

Networking & Content Delivery

Security

Serverless

Pick the one that aligns best with your expertise and interests.

Step 3. :: Submit Your Application

When applying to the AWS Community Builders program, one of the most crucial parts of your application is explaining why you want to join and showcasing your contributions to the AWS community. This section isn’t just about listing achievements—it’s about sharing your story, your passion for AWS, and how you’ve positively impacted others. Once you’ve prepared your answers, submit your application.

Step 4. :: Wait for the Response

After submitting, the AWS team will review your application. As it is a global program, it may take a while to examine all the applications and get to the final results, so patience is key. If accepted, you’ll receive an email welcoming you to the program.

📌 How can you increase your chances of being accepted?

Write Blogs / Articles

Sharing your knowledge through blogs is an excellent way to contribute. Write about real-world case studies, practical use cases, or your experiences implementing AWS services. Ensure your content is original and insightful, as plagiarism is a strict no-no. A well-written blog can become a go-to resource for others in the AWS ecosystem.

Create Technical Videos

If you’re comfortable on camera, creating video content can be a powerful medium. Record tutorials, walkthroughs, or use case demonstrations that can help others in their cloud journey. Platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn are great for reaching a wide audience.

Host Webinars or Seminars

Conducting webinars or in-person seminars is another impactful way to contribute. Share your expertise with a group of people in your college, workplace, or local community. These events not only spread knowledge but also build your reputation as a thought leader in the AWS space.

Engage with the Community

Active participation in AWS communities is one of the most authentic ways to connect and contribute. Join AWS User Groups, participate in forums, or become a mentor on platforms like AWS re:Post. Engaging with others fosters collaboration and mutual growth, making it a win-win.

Contribute to Open Source

Build tools, libraries, or scripts that solve common AWS challenges. Share them on GitHub or similar platforms with clear documentation. This demonstrates your technical skills and willingness to give back to the community.

Leverage Social Media

Use social platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram to share your AWS journey. Post quick tips, lessons learned, or insights about AWS services. Engaging with AWS-related hashtags and tagging the AWS team can increase your visibility.

What if you get rejected? 🤔

If your application don’t accepted in first try don’t worry, mine was accepted on my second attempt! The application process is highly competitive, making it challenging to get selected on the first try. Don’t let this discourage you—use the experience to refine your approach and prepare for the next cohort’s application.

Dr. Werner Vogels' keynote at AWS re:Invent 2024 highlighted critical strategies for overcoming the challenges of large-scale distributed systems.

Here's a breakdown of his insights:

Warning Signs of Complexity:

Declining feature velocity

Frequent escalations

Time-consuming debugging

Excessive codebase growth

Inconsistent patterns

Proliferation of dependencies

Undifferentiated workloads

Lessons in Simplexity:

Evolvability as a Requirement

Break Complexity into Pieces

Align Teams with Architecture

Organize into Cells

Automate Complexity

Design Predictable Systems

Building Evolvable and Resilient Systems:

Cloud-native designs modeled on business concepts.

Hidden internal details with fine-grained, decentralized interfaces.

Resilience through automation, observability, and fault isolation.

His insights are a valuable guide for designing scalable and sustainable systems. What are your thoughts on these approaches?

AWS Lambda's cold start issue continues to be a topic of discussion among developers 💻. But did you know that optimizing your code 🔧 and properly allocating memory 💾 can significantly reduce the duration of a cold start?

Here are a few tips to consider:

Keep your function code concise and only include necessary libraries. 📚

Enable Provisioned Concurrency for frequently accessed functions. 🚀

Choose the correct runtime of a Lambda function. 👨‍💻

⚡ Bonus Tip:
This tool by Maxime DAVID visualize 10 Cold Starts for each runtime, updated daily. - https://maxday.github.io/lambda-perf/

By following these best practices, you can improve the performance of your AWS Lambda functions 💡 and provide a seamless user experience 🎯. For more tips and insights, connect with me on LinkedIn. 🚀

🚀 AWS Lambda SnapStart:
Get upto 90% Reduction in Lambda function cold start latency at no extra cost!

If you are using AWS Lambda funcitons this will drastically reduce lambda response time at little to no effort and cost. ⚡🎉

Things to know about Lambda SnapStart:

🔷 Caching – Cached snapshots are removed after 14 days of inactivity. Lambda will automatically refresh the cache if a snapshot depends on a runtime that has been updated or patched.

🔷 Pricing – There is no extra charge for the use of Lambda SnapStart.

🔷 Feature Compatibility – You cannot use Lambda SnapStart with larger ephemeral storage, Elastic File Systems, Provisioned Concurrency, or Graviton2. In general, AWS recommend using SnapStart for your general-purpose Lambda.
