Are Testimonials Losing Their Value in the AI World?

We’ve all been there. Browsing through a sleek new portfolio, a “revolutionary” SaaS landing page, or the 10th ChatGPT-generated startup site of the week. And boom - there it is:

“This product completely transformed our workflow!”
— Sarah Johnson, Product Manager

No disrespect to Sarah Johnson - but at this point, she might be the busiest testimonial-giver in the AI universe.

 What’s Going On?

With the rise of AI-generated sites, landing pages, and mock startups, the internet is now flooded with projects that look polished and convincing… until you read the testimonials. They all seem to follow the same pattern:

First name + last name (often a placeholder-sounding combo)

Generic title (Marketing Lead, VP of Growth, Product Manager)

A painfully vague quote praising efficiency, productivity, or “our
team’s synergy”

And chances are, no such person exists. Or if they do, they certainly didn’t review that product.

 Why Testimonials Used to Matter

Before AI content tools exploded, testimonials were a strong signal of trust. They told potential users:
“Hey, real people used this and liked it. You probably will too.”

They added legitimacy. Social proof. Personality.

But now, every other Figma template, Framer site, or AI SaaS builder inserts three generic avatars and plugs in a set of randomly generated quotes. And it’s starting to backfire.

Are We Seeing a Trust Recession?

The dev community - especially those of us building side projects, indie tools, or launching on Product Hunt - are beginning to question the authenticity of glowing reviews.

When 7 out of 10 projects have a Sarah Johnson raving about the product, we begin to tune it all out. Just like we ignore cookie pop-ups or auto-play YouTube ads. Overexposure leads to desensitization.

We’re in a testimonial inflation era. The value of a review drops when everyone has five of them by default - even before launching.

So, What Should We Do Instead?

Here’s a fresh take: if you’re building something cool, and you don’t yet have real testimonials - just say that.

Yup. Be human. Be real. Say something like:

“This product is fresh out of the oven. No testimonials yet, but I’d love your feedback!”

And when you do get feedback - make it real. Screenshot DMs. Quote actual tweets. Link to Reddit threads or GitHub Issues if someone gave praise. Authenticity over polish.

A genuine comment from a real user is worth far more than a dozen made-up quotes.

 Let’s Bring Back Real Voices

AI can generate beautiful UI, pixel-perfect typography, and a fake testimonial that sounds like it came from a sales brochure. But it can’t fake community.

As developers, we thrive on open feedback, real stories, and mutual respect. Testimonials should reflect that - not become another checkbox in a website builder wizard.

So next time you’re tempted to plug in a “Sarah Johnson” or “James from London”, maybe just hold off. Let your work speak first. The voices will follow - real ones.

Because sometimes, a cup of chai is all the appreciation you need.

 🚀 What is BuyMeAChai?

BuyMeAChai is a lightweight, no-login platform for Indian developers, freelancers, and indie creators to receive financial support or tips via UPI—directly, instantly, and without middlemen.

Whether you're building open-source tools, working solo gigs, or consulting on the side, this platform offers a zero-commission, UPI-native way to get appreciated for your work.

 🔍 Why Build This?

As a developer, I’ve often found global tools like BuyMeACoffee or Ko-Fi useful, but most:

Don’t support UPI

Charge fees or commissions

Require logins or verifications

Route payments through third parties

So I built BuyMeAChai — a dead-simple, no-friction alternative tailored for the Indian ecosystem. No logins. No waiting. No cut.

 ✨ Key Features

 ✅ Instant Setup

Create your chai page in seconds. No signup needed.

Enter your name

Enter your UPI ID

Your custom chai page is ready to go

Example page:

https://buymeachai.ankushminda.com/minda

 💸 Zero Commission

A clean UI

Supporter input (number of chais)

Auto-calculated total

QR code + UPI payment link for easy transfers

 📱 Mobile-First, Clean UI

The entire flow is built to work seamlessly on mobile and desktop.

Supporters can pay in under 10 seconds—no app downloads, no signups.

 🔐 Secure & Minimal

Your UPI ID is shown only on your page and QR.

No sensitive data is stored beyond what’s essential for displaying the page.

 👥 Who Is It For?

BuyMeAChai is built for:

📱 Side hustlers & solopreneurs: Validate your idea and build community support

We’re currently #3 on Peerlist launchpad. A quick upvote helps us reach more creators!

 📬 Let’s Connect

This is just v1. I’d love your thoughts on how to expand it—maybe:

Custom themes

Payment tracking (without storing sensitive data)

One-time vs recurring support

Analytics for page views or support trends

Let’s build something creators and coders in India truly need.

Reach out on:

🟢 Peerlist

💼 LinkedIn

Thanks for reading—and maybe... buy me a chai? 😄

Buy Me A Chai: How This Indian Platform Is Revolutionizing Creator Support

In a digital economy where creator monetization often comes with hefty platform cuts, a refreshing alternative has emerged for the Indian creator ecosystem. Buy Me A Chai, launched on April 5, 2025, by developer Ankush Minda, is bringing the familiar "chai" metaphor to digital tipping—with a philosophy that puts creators first.

 The Chai Revolution

While global platforms like Patreon, Ko-fi, and Buy Me A Coffee have dominated the creator support space, they've never quite resonated with Indian creators or their audiences. Buy Me A Chai changes this by embracing cultural familiarity and solving several key pain points:

Zero platform fees (only standard UPI transaction costs apply)

Direct UPI payments without international payment processing

Instant setup with minimal friction

Culturally relevant approach using chai as the support metaphor

For Indian creators, this represents a significant departure from the standard 5% (or higher) cuts that most platforms take from their earnings.

 How It Works

The beauty of Buy Me A Chai lies in its simplicity:

Quick setup: Creators register their name, support amount (like ₹10 for a chai), and UPI ID

Share your link: Each creator gets a personalized page at buymeachai.ankushminda.com

Receive support: Fans can contribute via any UPI app through dynamic QR codes or direct links

Track performance: Basic analytics help creators understand their support patterns

There's no app to download, no credit card processing, and no complicated dashboard—just the essentials needed to receive support.

 The Technical Foundation

Unlike many modern platforms built on complex stacks, Buy Me A Chai embraces simplicity with a traditional tech approach:

Built with PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and AJAX

Self-hosted on Ankush's personal domain (buymeachai.ankushminda.com)

Mobile-optimized with a warm, chai-inspired color palette

This technical choice reflects the platform's philosophy: eliminate unnecessary complexity and costs that would ultimately be passed to creators.

 Why Indian Creators Are Switching

In his Medium article introducing the platform, Ankush Minda highlights why existing solutions were falling short for Indian creators:

"International platforms aren't built with Indian payment ecosystems in mind. UPI has revolutionized how Indians transact, yet creator platforms haven't adapted. Why should Indian creators lose money to currency conversion and platform fees when there's a better way?"

The platform addresses several India-specific challenges:

Payment accessibility: UPI is ubiquitous in India, with over 300 million active users

Currency relevance: No more dealing with dollars when your audience thinks in rupees

Cultural connection: "Buy me a chai" resonates more naturally than "buy me a coffee" in the Indian context

Lower support threshold: Setting ₹10 (roughly $0.12) as a standard "chai" amount makes supporting creators more accessible

 Beyond a Platform: A Movement

What makes Buy Me A Chai particularly interesting is how it represents a broader shift toward creator-first tooling in the Indian digital economy. While global platforms optimize for scale and investor returns, Buy Me A Chai optimizes for creator earnings and cultural fit.

The platform embodies the growing "unbundling" trend where specialized, focused tools are replacing all-in-one platforms that charge premium fees for features many creators don't need.

Who Should Use Buy Me A Chai?

The platform is ideal for:

Content creators seeking direct support from their audience

Developers sharing open-source tools and utilities

Writers and bloggers looking to monetize without paywalls

Freelancers who want to offer a "tip jar" option

Community builders funding grassroots initiatives

 Getting Started

 The Future of Creator Support

As global creator platforms continue to raise fees and add complexity, Buy Me A Chai's minimalist, zero-fee approach feels like a breath of fresh air. By focusing exclusively on the Indian market and its unique payment ecosystem, it's carved out a valuable niche that larger platforms have overlooked.

For Indian creators tired of losing a significant percentage of their support to platform fees, Buy Me A Chai offers a compelling alternative that's worth exploring. After all, in the creator economy, every rupee counts—and this platform ensures more of those rupees end up where they belong: with the creators themselves.

Have you tried Buy Me A Chai? What other India-specific creator tools would you like to see developed? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
