      <title>3 CSS Features That I'm Hyped About in 2024</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;CSS is often regarded as one of the most challenging areas to master in Frontend space. Its versatility allows you to achieve almost anything with enough creativity, yet even after nearly 30 years, some fundamental features have been missing. The new updates in 2024 bring a lot of goodies that promise to simplify common challenges, such as building popovers, managing layouts, and adapting to themes. Below are some of the most exciting new CSS features I am particularly enthusiastic about and have already started to incorporate into my daily work.&lt;/p&gt;

  The Popover API + Anchor Positioning
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One of the most anticipated additions is the &lt;strong&gt;Popover API&lt;/strong&gt;, which introduces native support for frequently used elements such as tooltips, dropdowns, dialogs and a lot of things that have only been possible with just libraries or custom implementation. Either way, it added a lot of Javascript to achieve this. With this API, the process becomes simpler and more consistent across browsers without manual handling of every aspect.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I still remember the pain of creating a dynamically positioned tooltip for my single-page app. The combination of Popover API + Anchor Positioning (also new) opens up many possibilities for the new elements common to modern web app development but has been possible only with various hacks and workarounds. This will also reduce the need for heavy custom JavaScript, improving performance, browser compatibility and maintainability. You can create a simple popover with just a few lines of code:&lt;/p&gt;

  Align Content for block layout
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Another improvement (also, a long-awaited one) is the ability to &lt;strong&gt;align content within block layouts&lt;/strong&gt; without needing to rely on Flexbox or Grid. Flexbox and Grid are our usual go-to for managing complex layouts. However, it always seemed like an overkill for simpler use cases—like centering a div or aligning text inside a block element.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I know this seems like a small thing but it brings me a lot of satisfaction to finally see this happen. Just imagine explaining "how to center a div?" to a newbie, you'll know what I mean.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This new pseudo-class eliminates workarounds and helps create a simpler dynamic, context-aware style. It helps select elements based on the element's children, parents, or specific state conditions, which has long been a limitation in CSS. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For instance, you want to style a div differently if it contains a button:&lt;br&gt;

For example, this style will apply to a container containing either a button or a submit input.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Although not as revolutionary as the previous features, this will feel good if you have spent time managing multiple themes in your component libraries or apps. As modern websites increasingly embrace the dark side, managing theme-based styles can become tedious. Traditionally, you would use JavaScript or CSS media queries to detect the user's theme preference and then add separate styles for different conditions. With the &lt;strong&gt;new light-dark function&lt;/strong&gt;, it's now easier to apply conditional styles based on the user’s system-wide preferences. &lt;br&gt;
For example, if you want to apply different colors for dark and light modes, you can now do it like this:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There is a lot of amazing work and energy in the CSS and webdev space right now which makes me excited for the upcoming stuff. While these are the features I loved the most, there are a lot of new and exciting features. I am waiting for that "aha" moment when I apply these particular features to solve problems more efficiently in my product features because ultimately these are all just tools.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Curious case of Drag and Drop</title>

  Introduction
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Drag and drop may appear as a simple user interaction where you pick an item up and place it elsewhere, similar to organizing items on a Trello board or any Kanban-style interface where cards or information can be effortlessly rearranged with a click and drag.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;However, this whole process hides a lot of complexity behind it. Starting with moving data between different parts, and getting the correct drop position. This challenge escalates when you have a nested layer of elements that can move across multiple levels. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;To implement this, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel here, we have several libraries at our disposal. The most popular ones are:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://github.com/atlassian/react-beautiful-dnd" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;react-beautiful-dnd&lt;/a&gt; stands out as the most commonly used, it provides a clean and high-level API with a lot of abstraction. It was developed by Atlassian.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://github.com/react-dnd/react-dnd" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;react-dnd&lt;/a&gt; is quite powerful but a bit complex and requires some getting used to.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://github.com/clauderic/dnd-kit" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;dnd-kit&lt;/a&gt; is one of the newest ones, it is modern, light-weight, and performant.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;h2&gt;
  
  
  Problem
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We, at &lt;a href="https://epilot.cloud/" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;epilot&lt;/a&gt; have relied on &lt;code&gt;react-beautiful-dnd&lt;/code&gt; extensively and in different parts of our app.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;However, we hit some roadblocks in certain contexts while trying some complex scenarios where it was not accurately predicting the drop location of the element. Here is one example.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We devised several hacks for specific edge cases but they fell short of solving all of the issues. The code to move element data based on drop position was turning into Spaghetti code because of those edge cases. The discontinuation of maintenance and support of &lt;code&gt;react-beautiful-dnd&lt;/code&gt; was also not helping its case to keep using it.&lt;/p&gt;

  Solution
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Finally, we decided to explore alternative libraries that could solve our problems with a more explicit, intuitive, and simpler API. After evaluating several options, we settled with &lt;code&gt;dnd-kit&lt;/code&gt; as it provided an explicit and simple API. An added benefit was that it also provides hooks API which is missing in some of the older libraries. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Key advantages of &lt;code&gt;dnd-kit&lt;/code&gt; include:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This returned prediction is an array of objects with values &lt;code&gt;likefaceInViewConfidence&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;boundingBox&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;mesh&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;scaledMesh&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;annotations&lt;/code&gt;. The &lt;a href="https://github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-models/blob/master/face-landmarks-detection/README.md#keypoints" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;facemesh keypoints&lt;/a&gt; can be obtained from the &lt;code&gt;annotations&lt;/code&gt; key.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;These were the common steps you will need to do to set up a &lt;a href="https://github.com/tensorflow" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;TensorFlow.js&lt;/a&gt; project with the face landmarks detection model. If all goes well, the browser should ask for camera permission when you run the project to be able to detect live video, and once the model is loaded, it starts predicting!&lt;/p&gt;

  Adding blink detection
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With the keypoints, we can calculate the Eye Aspect Ratio(EAR) with the following formula.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here, &lt;code&gt;|| d ||&lt;/code&gt; represents the &lt;a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclidean_distance" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;Euclidean distance&lt;/a&gt; which is essentially the length of a line segment between the two points. And the points p1, p2 and so on, used here are mapped on the facemesh in the image.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So, when the person blinks, the EAR will drop close to zero. To detect the blink, the EAR will have to be lesser than a threshold which is close to zero. So, I used an EAR threshold that works for varying distances between the user and the camera. Once the EAR drops below the threshold, we know that eye is blinked. We have separate keypoints for both the eyes, so we can detect both eyes' blink separately.&lt;/p&gt;

  To the dark side
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Some time back, I read about an easy way to force the dark mode, which uses the &lt;a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/color-scheme" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;&lt;code&gt;CSS filter&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/a&gt; property. Coupling it with the &lt;a href="https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css3_pr_filter.asp" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;&lt;code&gt;color-scheme&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/a&gt; property, we can add dark mode to a majority of the pages. So, I would add these CSS properties to the root HTML element.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here, the blinkPrediction will be an object with the keys &lt;code&gt;blink&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;wink&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;longBlink&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;left&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;right&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;rate&lt;/code&gt;. Each key except &lt;code&gt;rate&lt;/code&gt; will be a boolean value.&lt;/p&gt;

  Challenges
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;With the &lt;a href="https://github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-models/tree/master/face-landmarks-detection#keypoints" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;face landmarks detection&lt;/a&gt; model, you will need to manually map &lt;a href="https://github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-models/blob/master/face-landmarks-detection/README.md#keypoints" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;facemesh keypoints&lt;/a&gt; on a graph from the data readings. There are a lot of annotations that can be used, but I could not find any source explaining them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;To decide the EAR(Eye-Aspect-Ratio) threshold, I had to try different values. I use the one that works the best for different distances between the user and the camera. So, it is not bullet-proof.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Chrome extension&lt;/strong&gt;: You can create a chrome extension for the same demo. Another extension idea is to gauge the eye blink rate and use it for different purposes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Blink rate&lt;/strong&gt;: There have been &lt;a href="https://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?hl=en&amp;amp;as_sdt=0%2C5&amp;amp;as_vis=1&amp;amp;q=blink+rate" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;numerous studies&lt;/a&gt; on how blinking patterns can measure or apprise certain aspects of an individual or a situation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That's it! Overall, this project wasn't really about toggling dark mode. I wanted to play around with TensorFlow and create something while doing it! Also, I could not find any project related to blink detection in Javascript, so I developed the &lt;a href="https://www.npmjs.com/package/blink-detection" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;package&lt;/a&gt;.
