Nope, it is far more than just an OS.
Fedora has its own ecosystem where it thrives on developing, testing, and evolving. This ecosystem is what we called as the Fedora Project. It consists of a vast collection of software; which are free and open for anyone. Hence, the Fedora project comes under FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).

If you want to explore more about the project. You can check this link. https://fedoraproject.org/

Anyways, let’s learn as much as we can about it here.

Its codebases is distributed across multiple platforms, but it is bound together by an extravagant community that maintains and contributes to it. This community is an epitome of Fedora’s vision, the “Four Foundations”: Freedom, Friends, Features, and First. Each of these pillars have its significant meaning. Lets' learn about each one

Freedom signifies on providing free advanced softwares to community.

Friends reflects the welcoming nature of the community. This is why, it encourages contributor to learn and contribute.
Features highlights innovation in technology. And lastly, First emphasizes a commitment to innovation.

 Contributing to Fedora

If you are interested in Fedora community, especially as an Outreachy applicant, you should keep in mind these things:

Overthinking delays progress. Start by selecting Fedora from the project list, pick a task, and begin working.

Do not rush. Take time to understand the project, explore Fedora, read documentation, run the code, it really helps to build a clear understanding of the problem.

Collaborate with the community. If you get stuck, members actively help resolve issues.
