It’s not because their product is bad.

The real problem is this: they treat marketing as something unimportant and instead continue writing features.

They think, “If I build great features, users will come.” Or they believe that a beautiful design and good interface will make their startup successful.

But real life doesn’t work like that.

I started my entrepreneurial journey as a developer. I quit my last job four years ago. At that time, I was a software engineer.

During the past four years, I changed my mindset from feature building to marketing. And I keep changing it because it is hard.

Sometimes thoughts come to my mind like:

“Your competitor has a great feature, so do the same”

Or:

“Add a new feature, it will grow the market”

But I’m sure, it will not grow the market. It will waste time and bring frustration.

For developers, building features is comfortable. Marketing feels difficult. So we avoid marketing and stay in our comfort zone.

When there are no payments and no growth, you start thinking your product is bad. Then you get new energy and start building a new product that you believe will succeed 100%.

This cycle often leads to burnout, disappointment, and sometimes depression.

Now I spend about 90% of my time on marketing and 10% on writing code. Because of this shift, my projects started getting more visitors and started earning money.

Before, I believed that more features would fix everything.

The best way to learn anything is practice. Learning should go together with action.

You try some marketing. It doesn’t work. Then you look at how others do it. You read articles. You watch videos. You find guides and tips. You test again.

It’s a process.

But many developers surround themselves with marketing books and spend months reading. They keep building features. They think they are building a startup.

But they are not doing marketing.

If you read books before doing anything, you don’t really understand them. You have nothing to compare with. No real experience. No base to judge what works and what doesn’t.

Many developers think they need to collect knowledge first.

In the end, they don’t get paying customers. They just waste time and energy.

Developers often fail at marketing because they focus on features instead of solving real user problems. They don’t define a clear target audience. They don’t explain the value clearly. They skip market research. They think, “If I build it, users will come.”

Marketing becomes a secondary task instead of the main strategy.

My advice?

Choose one marketing channel. Start using it. Learn while doing it.

Watch YouTube videos about that channel. See how other entrepreneurs use it. Test things. Improve step by step.

There are two things a developer must start doing if he wants to promote his startup and get new customers.

The first one is learning content marketing.

The ability to write good content is very important. Even if you decide to run paid ads on Google or social media, you still need to write a good headline and description. Writing skills matter everywhere.

When you learn content marketing, you start to understand people better. You see what they search for and how they think. It also brings you traffic in the long term through blog posts and social media.

If you publish consistently, people start to trust you. They follow you. Then they recommend you and share your content. And trust makes sales much easier, especially if you’re a solo founder.

The second thing is choosing the marketing channel that works best for you.

I tried many channels: X, BlueSky, Reddit, Facebook, SEO, YouTube in different formats. Some of them didn’t work well for me, so I stopped. I focused only on what brought real traffic to my website.

You need to save your time and energy. First, find what works. Grow that channel. Then later you can test new ones again.

Right now I focus only on content marketing, YouTube, and SEO. This brings me more than 2,000 warm visitors every month. These people are not cold traffic. They search for something specific. They already have a problem and are looking for a solution.

Some visitors might link to or share your site. Backlinks are still SEO gold.

If new visitors bounce right away, it won’t help and could even hurt your SEO. It’s more about the quality of traffic than just the numbers.

Relevant traffic is crucial for SEO

If your traffic isn’t relevant, visitors will quickly realize your site isn’t what they were looking for — and leave immediately.

This behavior leads to a drop in metrics like Bounce Rate and Visit Duration, which can negatively impact your search rankings over time.

Bounce Rate and which is normal?

Bounce Rate is the percentage of visitors who leave after viewing only one page.

For blogs, higher bounce rates are normal (people read 1 post and leave). For SaaS, tools, landing pages, you usually want it under 60%.

Average Visit Duration and what value is normal?

Average Visit Duration means how long people stay on your site on average.

If your site is just a simple tool or info page, 45 seconds might be fine. But if it’s a content-rich site, you’d want longer.

So, traffic from expired domains should be relevant.

How to find domains with relevant traffic

To find domains with traffic and backlinks, you can use dropped domain platforms, expired domain services, or domain auctions. I personally prefer using GoneDomains expired domains service, because it only crawls high-authority, high-traffic websites like Forbes, Medium, and Product Hunt.

This means it offers high-quality dropped domains with solid backlinks that have a strong chance of still getting traffic. Plus, GoneDomains has helpful filters and data tools that make it easy to find the right domains in just a few clicks.

When you find a domain you like, the next step is to check its backlinks. The backlinks should be related to your niche — this ensures the traffic is relevant and helps improve key metrics like Bounce Rate and Average Visit Duration.

Setting up a right 301 redirect

After when you find liked and suitable domains, you need to buy them and setting up a 301 redirect to your main domain.

It did the same way but in different section in depends of your registrar, I use Cloudflare free redirect feature.

In the URL

, the part

?ref=expiredomains.today

is called a URL parameter.

So this URL is being used for referral tracking.

It tells the website analytics that the visitor came from

expiredomains.today

This is useful for:

Tracking where traffic is coming from
Analyzing which marketing channels are working

This parameter is very important for analytics and for keeping track of domains with irrelevant traffic.

Regularly check domain traffic

Check your domain’s traffic for relevance once a month. If you notice that a traffic source has a very low visit duration (less than 1 minute), it can negatively affect your SEO.

You should identify and remove redirects from these low-quality traffic sources to your main site. Otherwise, they can hurt your SEO and impact your business in the long run.

Calculation how much it cost

It cost me just $36 to buy a bunch of expired domains with traffic for one year.

They bring me 100 visitors per month, or 1,200 per year.

At just $0.03 per visitor, it’s very cost-effective, especially when the traffic is real, organic-looking, and relevant.

Most legitimate paid traffic options are more expensive, unless you’re really good at ad targeting or finding underpriced channels.

I get it — trying to rank for competitive keywords without a solid Domain Rating (DR) can feel like an uphill battle.

Your traffic stays low, and it feels like the competition just keeps pulling ahead.

But here’s the good news: boosting your Domain Rating doesn’t have to be as hard as it seems.

With the right moves, you can start climbing those search rankings and see more organic visitors.

So, what’s the deal with Domain Rating, and why should you care?

Domain Rating is your backlink quality

Domain Rating is a score that ranges from 0 to 100, showing how strong your website’s backlinks are. Basically, the more high-quality sites that link to you, the higher your DR.

Why does it matter? A higher DR means search engines see your site as more trustworthy, which helps you rank better.

So, what does Domain Rating actually impact?

A higher DR generally means better search engine rankings. Why? Because strong backlinks — those from trusted, authoritative websites — tell search engines that your site is legit and worth ranking.

The stronger your backlinks (higher DR), the more likely you are to rank for competitive keywords. This, in turn, boosts your organic traffic and helps you get ahead of the competition.

Fast and easy way to boost Domain Rating

If you want to increase your DR, you’ve got to get strong backlinks.

The traditional route to getting backlinks involves creating standout content, data, or articles. You then pitch this content to website owners or writers, hoping they’ll link back to you. But here’s the catch — sometimes they decline, and some sites will even ask for payment, which can range from $200 to much higher depending on the niche.

This process can take weeks, cost a lot of money, and demand a ton of your time and energy to get just one backlink.

Domains with strong backlinks

But here’s a quicker, less painful option: buy dropped domains from related niches.

Here’s the trick: you purchase domains that already have strong backlinks and redirect them to your site. All those backlinks pointing to the dropped domain automatically redirect to your site, which helps boost your Domain Rating.

To find these domains, use drop platforms. I personally use GoneDomains — it has a filter for Domain Rating so you can quickly find domains with high DR in your niche.

Once you’ve found a good domain, you can check its backlinks using the Ahrefs Domain Rating Checker. After that, you can buy the domain from any registrar (I prefer NameCheap) and set up a 301 redirect to your main domain.

Tips for maximizing your DR boost

Stick to domains from your niche (or at least a closely related one). Random backlinks from unrelated sites won’t do you any favors.
If your site is about development, it’ll look weird (and maybe even suspicious) if you’re getting backlinks from cooking or pet websites. Keep it relevant — that’s how you boost DR without raising red flags.
Check the domain’s backlinks for any associations with scams, adult content, casinos, or illegal links before purchasing.
Set up redirects not only to the main page but also to other internal pages. For example, if you have an article on your blog titled “The Best 10 Tools to Create a Website,” it would be great to find a dropped domain with backlinks related to web studios or web constructors and set up a redirect from it to that article. This way all domain backlinks are linking to the article page. It gives Google a signal that to your article linking a lot of pages. It also speeding up index of your site pages.
Don’t buy a large number of domains with backlinks all at once. Take it slow. It should look like a natural growth, without a sharp spike.

Big drops in website traffic?

It’s time to check your site – but here’s the kicker: Start with your outgoing links. You might not realize it, but these links could be silently damaging your SEO and traffic.

I recently crawled a site with 185,000 monthly visitors to test a new feature for Gone.Domains. It finds valuable domains with strong backlinks that can be leveraged for SEO improvements, new project launches, or domain resale.
