Hi everyone,

I’m conducting an academic research study on how developers naturally interact with open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) while working on real coding tasks.

This study is time-sensitive and we are only recruiting 10 participants.

Compensation: $15

++ Bonus Incentive: Among early participants, 2 people will be randomly selected to receive an additional $10 bonus

How developers write prompts for coding tasks

How they refine requests and interact with LLMs during real-world development

Submit:

Full LLM chat logs (shareable link or uploaded file)

Screen recording (for research purposes only)

Short exit interview after completing all tasks

Hi everyone,

I’m a researcher conducting an academic study on how developers interact with Large Language Models (LLMs) during coding tasks in real-world settings.

This study is NOT about evaluating your coding skills.

We focus only on your prompts and interaction style with LLMs.

What we study

How developers prompt and communicate with LLMs
Interaction patterns during coding-related tasks
NOT code quality or programming ability

Important clarifications

This is NOT a coding test
There is NO evaluation of your programming skills
You do NOT need to submit code for grading or review
We only collect prompts, conversations, and LLM outputs

What participation involves

Completing 5 short coding-related tasks using your usual prompting style
You may use:
Open-source LLMs (e.g., Code LLaMA, StarCoder, DeepSeek, etc.)
OR commercial models (e.g., GPT, Claude, Gemini)
Screen & audio recording during the session (research use only)
A brief exit interview about your experience

Duration

Up to 60 minutes total

Compensation

$15 after completing all study tasks and the exit interview

Recruitment timeline

We aim to recruit 20 participants by January 4
Sessions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis

Eligibility

18 years or older
Experience using LLMs for coding (any skill level welcome)

Data use & ethics

Data will be used solely for academic research
Findings may be published in research venues
All recordings will remain confidential and used only by the research team

[Research Study] How Developers Use LLMs for Code Generation

We are recruiting developers for a research study examining how real-world developers use Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate code.

What Participation Involves:

Completing 5 coding tasks using your usual prompting style and preferred LLMs (open-source models only)
You can use an open-source model similar to the one you use at work, as long as it doesn’t contain any company-specific fine-tuning and can be run safely on your own environment.
Providing your prompts, interactions, and LLM-generated code for research purposes
Screen and audio recording during the study session
Completing a brief exit interview regarding your experience with LLM-generated code

Data Use:

Collected data will be used to analyze developer prompt patterns
Research findings may be published in academic venues
All recordings will be used solely for research and will not be shared outside the research team

Duration & Compensation:

Up to 60 minutes total
$15 compensation after completing all study tasks and the exit interview

Eligibility & Voluntary Participation:

Participants must be 18 years of age or older
Participants must successfully complete the screening questions included in the survey
