Transform enterprise workloads with AWS Transform and Agentic AI

Note: ✋ This post was originally published on my blog wiki-cloud.co

Introduction

In an increasingly dynamic business environment, the ability to adapt quickly to technological changes has become a key factor for competitiveness. Organizations that depend on legacy applications or obsolete architectures, many of which were developed years or even decades ago, face significant challenges, such as difficulty in scaling, high maintenance costs, limited integration with modern technologies and slower development cycles.

Modernizing these applications is not simply a technical issue; it's a strategic necessity to drive innovation, improve customer experience, and reduce time to market. However, transforming complex and critical systems is no simple task. It requires careful planning, a deep understanding of existing dependencies, and an approach that minimizes operational risks.

Transforming or modernizing enterprise workloads continues to be a critical challenge for many organizations. Despite the advancement of cloud computing, data shows a strong reliance on traditional infrastructures.

💡 According to Gartner, 70% of workloads still run in on-premisesenvironments, reflecting a significant opportunity and urgency for modernization.

💡 According to McKinsey, 70% of the enterprise software used by Fortune 500 companies was written more than 20 years ago. This legacy software, while still functional, is often built on obsolete technologies that are difficult to scale, maintain, or integrate with modern solutions.

💡 ISG Research highlights that the average time to complete a migration or modernization is 1.5 years, which it reveals the complexity and duration of these processes when there is a lack of appropriate tools or automated approaches.

In this context AWS Transform enters into play (previously presented as Amazon Q Developer transformation capabilities at re:Invent 2024), an AWS commitment to modernizing these types of applications, infrastructure, and systems by leveraging the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Agentic AI, which is currently available to the public (GA) since mid-May 2025.

What is AWS Transform?

Image description

AWS Transform is a revolutionary service that uses Agentic AI with the goal of accelerating and simplifying the migration and modernization of infrastructure, applications and source code. In other words, it is a service that uses specialized AI agents that help eliminate the heavy lifting of transformation by automating complex migration and modernization tasks for .NET, Mainframe and VMware application workloads. Additionally, it offers an assessment service, where workload migration planning and business case generation is performed.

AWS Transform through Agentic AI utilizes AWS advances in foundational models, LLMs, machine learning, neural networks, automated reasoning, and AI infrastructure to deliver a fully advanced migration and modernization experience.

Currently AWS Transform offers three types of transformation agents which are for .NET applications, Mainframe (COBOL z/OS) applications and VMware.

After running many transformations for various customers by AWS, it can be concluded (data AWS Blog) that:

💡 The AWS Transform for .NET can modernize Windows-based .NET applications to Linux up to four times faster than traditional methods and achieve savings of up to 40% in licensing costs.

💡 The AWS Transform for Mainframe can break down monolithic COBOL z/OS applications into components that can run in the cloud in minutes instead of months.

💡 The AWS Transform for VMware can automate the conversion of VMware on-premises network configurations to their AWS equivalents up to 80 times faster than manual techniques.

AWS Transform leverages the conversational expertise of Amazon Q, which acts as an expert transformation assistant. This assistant actively collaborates in defining modernization and/or transformation project objectives, evaluating business plans and cost savings projections. It also facilitates the review and adaptation of transformation and/or modernization plans, as well as the validation of suggestions related to code and infrastructure, all through specialized agents.

AWS Transform enables seamless collaboration across cross-functional teams through a unified web experience, where it is possible to manage tasks, track progress and coordinate efforts at every stage of the process. In this way, AWS Transform provides full control and continuous visibility into transformation and/or modernization plans, ensuring execution aligned with business objectives.

Benefits

The key benefits of using AWS Transformation are highlighted below:

  • Accelerate modernization and migration: Delegate complex and labor-intensive transformation tasks during the discovery, planning and execution phases to Amazon Q Developer agents with expertise in languages, frameworks and infrastructure, enabling developers and the project team to continue to innovate.
  • Deliver large-scale projects and reduce costs by up to 40%: Efficiently transform complex, large-scale projects by modernizing components in parallel, improving team collaboration, and reducing costs through a unified web experience.
  • Increase innovation, security, and performance: Address application vulnerabilities, adopt high-performance integrations and frameworks, and leverage modern AWS systems and services to continue to innovate.

What is Agentic AI?

Now we ask ourselves, what is Agentic AI? Agentic AI (also known as AI Agents or Artificial Intelligence Agent) is nothing more than a class of artificial intelligence that emphasizes software agents that act autonomously or semi-autonomously to achieve specific goals, making decisions, executing complex tasks and adapting to the context of the transformation project dynamically, all with minimal human intervention. Unlike passive models that only respond to direct inputs, intelligent AI agents can plan, reason, interact with other systems, collaborate with humans and continuously learn from their environment and experience.

Agentic AI is characterized by:

  • Autonomy: It operates without constant user intervention.
  • Defined goals: It executes actions aimed at specific results.
  • Reasoning and planning: It can evaluate different paths to achieve a goal.
  • Interaction: It communicates with humans and systems.
  • Continuous learning: It improves with experience.

AWS Transform incorporates Agentic AI principles through its integration with Amazon Q and other intelligent components of the AWS ecosystem. AWS Transform is a practical example of Agentic AI applied to technology modernization, where intelligent agents not only assist, but actively participate in decision making, task execution and cross-team collaboration.

Looking ahead to 2028, significant changes are anticipated on multiple fronts. Below is the projection proposed by Gartner® that illustrates how agentic AI will redefine the digital and business landscape:

Image description
Sorce: Gartner®

💡 By 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include Agentic AI, up from less than 1% in 2024.

💡 By 2028, AI agent machine customers will replace 20% of the interactions at human-readable digital storefronts.

💡 By 2028, at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through Agentic AI, up from zerp percent in 2024.

Conclusions

AWS Transform epresents a step forward for organizations looking to leave their legacy applications behind and embrace new technologies with cloud and artificial intelligence support. With its focus on automation, data-driven analytics and native integration with the AWS ecosystem, this service becomes a strategic ally on the path to technology modernization.

Whether you're modernizing a critical financial system or scaling a growing web application, AWS Transform offers the tools you need to do it securely, efficiently, and sustainably.
